10 YEARS AGO (2016) 2016 Honored Veteran Khalil Scott
The American Legion Ernest W. Jones Post #65 has named Khalil Scott as the Honored Veteran for 2016. As such, the community will also be given the chance to recognize and honor Khalil on July 4 as he rides in the community parade.
Rauhn Panting was in attendance at the Oneida County Commission meeting for June 13 to present plans for a new commercial building at the fairgrounds. Panting is the chairman of committee appointed by the commissioners to investigate a building that would be used as a display building during the fair, a place for voting and offices for the Oneida County Extension Service.
Members of the Malad High School Class of 1966 held their 50th Class Reunion on Saturday, June 4. The class enjoyed a nice meal and visited for the afternoon. Mary Romrell and her family will have two reasons to celebrate this year. First, on July 4, 2011, Mary will get to ride in the Malad Fourth of July Parade as the Honored Pioneer in a Model A Ford sports coupe equipped with a rumble seat restored by Dave Stewerd. According to Mary, this car brings back memories of her youth. Secondly, on July 23, her family is excited to celebrate Mary’s century of living as she turns 100 years of age.
Jenny Rae Hawkins received her doctor of Philosophy in Economics from the Eller College of Management at The University of Arizona on May 15, 2011, with her dissertation being “Essays in Industrial Organization”.
The Citizenship Award is presented just one to a student during their years at Malad Elementary This year’s recipients of the award are Brooke Purdum, Whitney Palmer, Ashton Parker, Justin Wittman, Ashlynn Brown, Jordan Brown, Raychel Willie, Trevan Ward, Toni Gunnell, Nashkia Knutter, Bryant Kotter, Sadie Giles, Makyla Madsen, Kelsey Owens and Cari Doughty.
Three Oneida county fathers were celebrated in The Idaho Enterprise Father’s Day edition. They were Gene Edwards, Spencer Atkinson and Troy Estep.

Wayne Williams will celebrate his 80th birthday on June 17 at his home in St. John with a Dutch Oven Cook-out hosted by his family.
Tia Talbot of Malad City has earned a place on the Idaho State University 2006 spring semester dean’s list for the College of Arts and Sciences.
The Malad Area Chamber of Commerce is solidifying plans for the annual 4th of July celebration, now only a few weeks away. The theme for this year’s parade will be “Flags of Freedom.”
Steve Mason, a 2005 graduate of Malad High School, will be graduating June 23, 2006, from one of the nation’s premier technical training schools, WyoTech. Steve will be graduating with a diploma in Automotive/Diesel and has accepted a job position with Hanover Compressor Company, a worldwide company.
Winners in the Malad City Lions Club Essay Contest were presented to the Malad City Lions Club members at their annual Officers Installation meeting June 1, 2006. Chris Hill, first place winner, was awarded twenty-five dollars; McKenna Richardson, second place winner, was awarded fifteen dollars; and Meaghan Olsen, third place winner was awarded ten dollars.

At the Girls’ Basketball Camp held last week in Malad and starting off to practice their dribbling skills are Taya Thorpe, Kyley Thorpe, Rylee Tripp, Natalie Jensen, Paityn Tripp, Kelbie Edwards and Cheyenne Palmer.

Frank Williams, LaJuana Atkinson and Phyllis Price have recently retired from the Oneida County Hospital/Long Term Long Care Facility and will be honored at an open house on June 22 in the high school commons from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.
Lance Corporal Nick Jones, son of Craig and Linda Jones, joined the United States Marine Corp on July 23, 1995. Lance Corporal Jones achieved a high ACT test score and other academic tests given by the USMC.
Breaking Ground for the new Malad Middle School are members of the Oneida School Board, School Administration and Steering Committee. The $3,850,000 project is expected to get underway soon, with completion slated for the summer of ’97.
Camie Buttars Tripp graduated from the WSU/USU Nursing Program as a registered nurse on June 4th at the Chase Fine Arts Building on the Utah State University campus.
Kam Alder has signed a National Junior College Athletic Association Letter of Intent and Scholarship Agreement to play basketball for the 1996-97 school year at Colorado Northwestern Community College, located in Rangely, Colorado.
Five from Malad have been recognized for academic excellence by universities of higher learning. Jenny Hawkins made the Idaho State University College of Business dean’s list for spring semester 1996. In addition, Ann Isaacson, Sara Jones and Rose Loehr are on the dean’s list for the College of Education. At Washington State University, Alan L. Atkinson was named to the President’s Honor Roll during the spring semester.

40 YEARS AGO (1986) Cherie Weeks (center) was named Queen of the Oneida County 'Cowboy Classic' last Saturday evening at the fairgrounds. Honored as 1st Attendant was Sparke Naylor of Dayton (left), and Leslie Freestone of Arimo (right). these beautiful ladies will reign over rodeo festivities slated for July 11th and 12th.
Cherie Weeks of St. John will reign as Rodeo Queen over the Oneida County “Cowboy Classic” set for July 11 and 12 at the Oneida County Fairgrounds.
It was a special Father’s Day for Second Warder’s last Sunday as they not only got to spend the day honoring their fathers, but they got to do it in their own meetinghouse. For a year their house of worship has been undergoing renovation and remodeling. Every attempt has been made by the architects and contractors to restore the chapel to its original beauty.
The Malad Stake Branch Genealogical Library of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is moving to new facilities located in the renovated Malad Second Ward building.
Malad youngsters whooped it up last Saturday as they met at the Oneida County Fairgrounds to participate in the 4th District IJRA Rodeo held here. Malad rodeo’ers who placed and their events are as follows: Josh Barnes placed 1st in sheep riding in the 4-6-age bracket. Wade Christophersen placed 3d in calves in the 6-8-age bracket. Josh Scott placed 4th in calves in the 6-8-age bracket. Colby Jones and Denise Carter placed 2nd in team roping. Mindi, Lex and Kirk Smith of Holbrook, placed 1st and 2nd in barrels and poles, first in goat ribbon tying and 1st in breakaway respectively.
50 YEARS AGO (1976)
Pictured in The Idaho Enterprise are Idaho’s two lieutenant governors as they take a break from the rigors of office in their hometown of Malad. Lt. Governor John V. Evans will soon have to return to duties in Boise, while Girls’ State Lt. Governor Wendy Thomas can relax for the summer after a busy week of political instruction at the College of Idaho, Caldwell. Wendy was elected Lt. Governor by the 270 Idaho high school girls attending the session at Caldwell.
Incumbent Viva Burrie was elected Monday June 14, to another five-year term on the Oneida County Free Library Board by a vote of 27-0. She will join library trustees Mrs. Dewey Jones, Chairman; Gail Dorius, vice-president; William Griff Jenkins, treasurer, and Don Eliason.
The Malad LDS Stake will send 150 Oneida men up to Rexburg early Thursday morning to aid the stricken community in cleaning up flood damage from the Teton Dam disaster. Five hundred men from this LDS region, which includes Garland and Tremonton, Utah, will be sent to the damaged area by the church. Brigham City, Utah, and Preston Stakes have already sent up working contingents of 500 members.
Todd Jones is pictured in The Idaho Enterprise showing the trophies and ribbons he won for 1st place in showmanship and western equitation at the Caribou 4-H Invitational Horse Show held at Grace on June 12. Todd was picked from a field of over 50 participants.
60 YEARS AGO (1966)
Pictured in The Idaho Enterprise is the architect’s sketch of the proposed addition to the Oneida Hospital, which will be presented to the Oneida voters for approval of the necessary bonding at the August 2nd primary election. The renovation and modernization of the existing plant will include a 44 x 60 foot wing on the north and a 21 x 43 foot addition on the east. When completed the hospital will have new operating and delivery rooms, new nursery, 21 regular hospital rooms and 16 rooms on the lower floor for nursing home patients with recreational and dining facilities included. Included in the proposed plan will be furnishings and equipment to bring Oneida Hospital up to regulations set up by the State of Idaho Department of Health.
Army PFC Kenneth Smith, son of Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Smith, was assigned to the 1st Cavalry Division in Vietnam, May 20. Smith, a helicopter mechanic in Headquarters Company of the division’s 3rd Brigade, entered the Army in 1965, completed basic combat training at Fort Polk, La., and was last stationed at Fort Eustis, Va.
70 YEARS AGO (1956)
Joyce Mills, Miss Malad City, arrived June 13 in Boise where she will compete in the annual Miss Idaho contest Saturday. Miss Mills is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Mills. She has been active in high school and LDS church functions. She recently was named Hi-Queen over 1,500 high school students attending senior day at Utah State Agricultural College and graduated from Malad High School.
Those attending summer school at USAC, Logan are, Mr. and Mrs. C.O. Simpson, Marguerite Davis, Faye Williams, Maude Call, Mae K. Williams, Mary Jensen, and Don Castleton.
AJay and Betty Jones and Verlaine Larsen left Monday to attend summer school at Idaho State College, Pocatello.
Three members of the Malad Volunteer Fire Department, Derrald Chivers, Keith Evans and Henry Bolingbroke, were among 200 firemen who attended the annual Idaho State Fire School at Boise last weekend.
A 1952 1 1/2-ton truck was destroyed by fire near the Washo road test project on Highway 191 this week. Sheriff John A. Evans reports that the fire was caused by a lighted cigarette, which was flipped from the truck cab by a hitchhiker being given a ride by the truck owner. The cigarette landed in the truck bed and the blaze was out of control before discovered. Sheriff Evans said the fire should serve as a warning to others to be particularly careful during the dry season as fires are easily started and can cause tremendous property damage in a short time.
80 YEARS AGO (1946)
Ogden Air Technical Service Command, Hill Field, Utah – Melvin L. Thompson of Malad City, Idaho, recently received the Air Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters, which was posthumously awarded to his son, Staff Sergeant Melvin D. Thompson, for exceptionally meritorious achievement, it was announced today by Colonel Ray G. Harris, commanding officer of the Ogden Air Technical Service Command. The decoration was presented at a ceremony in the Thompson home by Lt. Kent O. Thursby, Hill Field Awards and Decorations officer. The three Oak Leaf Clusters represent additional awards of the Air Medal. The citation accompanying the decorations praised the late Sergeant Thompson for his “courage, coolness and skill…while participating in sustained bomber combat operation over enemy occupied Continental Europe.”
Sgt. Kenneth C. Jones was discharged June 2, 1946, at Fort Lewis, Washington, and returned to Malad, accompanied by his wife, who met him at Pocatello. He entered the service March 16, 1945, at Fort Douglas, Utah. He spent eight months at Korea. He has the Asiatic-Pacific ribbon, good conduct medal, victory medal and occupation ribbon.
Miss Mary LaRue Harris, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Morgan Harris of Malad was one of forty-three University of Utah students to receive awards for participation in school activities at the University of Utah. Miss Harris is a member of Alpha Xi Delta sorority, Lambda Delta Sigma, Alpha Theta, Kappa music sorority, and the Art Guild. She was also on several dance committees and a reporter for the college paper.
