Looking Back -Week of June 11, 2026

5 YEARS AGO (2021)

On Saturday, June 5, many young women participated in the Oneida County Fair and Rodeo Queen Contest in five separate categories. A Senior Queen and attendants, a Junior Queen and attendant, Princess and attendants, Jr. Miss Cowgirls, and Mini Miss Cowgirls were a chosen.

Malad residents and visitors enjoyed spending the day downtown for the annual Malad Classic Car and bike Show. People and cars came from all over to participate in the activates, and awards were handed out in a variety of categories, all sponsored by local businesses. 

The seniors at Malad High School graduated on May 26. Among those graduating were 27 students who also received a diploma from Southeastern Idaho Technical College (SEITec). The students receiving a diploma from SEITec wore a green stole to distinguish their accomplishments.

As the 2020-2021 school year comes to and end, Malad High School students elected new student body and class officers to lead them for the 2021-2022 school year.

Chosen to lead the Student body is president Bridger Bastian, Vice President Matt Jacaway, Secretary Madi Green, Public Relations Sydney Carey, Pep Representative Jace Williams, and Technology Specialist Porter Kimberling.

10 YEARS AGO (2016)

On Wednesday, May 25, Malad High School held their 103rd Commencement Exercises. Fifty students graduated from Malad High School as the Class of 2016.

The 50 graduates walked through the gym and up to their seats in the bleachers as the Malad High School Concert Band played the processional, “Pomp and Circumstance, Opus 39 No. 1 in D Major” by Elgar. Mrs. Jamie Jacaway served as narrator, reading each graduate’s name and their future plans.

The annual Memorial Day program, under the direction of the American Legion Ernest W. Jones Post #65 and American Legion Auxiliary, was held in the Malad City Cemetery on Monday morning.

In addition, the American Legion Firing Squad and Color Guard visited cemeteries in Snowville, Holbrook, St. John, Pleasantview, Samaria, Portage, Washakie, Plymouth and Cherry Creek where they honored deceased veterans with the playing of “Taps” and presenting a three-volley salute

The students of Helen Ward and Jean Thomas presented their spring piano recital on Monday, May 23. The students received their awards for completing another year of piano lessons with Helen or Jean. Isabella Haycock, Jens Huckabee, Timmy Jensen, Hallee Kimberling, and Alivia Waldron were first-year students participating in the recital.

More advanced students participating in the recital were Hallye Green (second-year student); Jeni Alder, Clara Huckabee, and Addie Waldron (third-year students); Kristle Jensen (fifth-year student); and Hallee Haycock (seventh-year student).

The most recent Americanism essay contest sponsored by the BPO Elks Grand Lodge Fraternal Committee, Raegan Smith won 2nd place for the District Elks Lodge that is based in Preston and went on to win 2nd place for the Idaho East Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks. Raegan was very excited, and received a very nice cash prize for the district and state win. She was honored at the Malad Elementary School Awards Assembly held on Wednesday, May 25.

15 YEARS AGO (2011)

The cultural hall of the Malad Third/Sixth/Seventh LDS Ward meetinghouse was filled to capacity for the third annual Hall of Fame banquet and induction ceremony for the 2011 inductees. Honored were Lucile Harrison, Marvin Hess and Myra Jean John.

On Saturday evening, the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a shooting. The victim was transported to Oneida County Hospital. And subsequently to Portenuf Medical Center where he underwent surgery for the gunshot wound.

Oneida High School recently graduated six students from their Spring Class of 2011. Pictured in The Idaho Enterprise is Commencement Speaker Randy Willie with graduates Danae Coburn, Mariah Thibedeau, Leo Cevantes, D. J. Peabody and Ashton Tavoian. Not pictured was Sam Woodward.

The American Legion Auxiliary have selected the Girls’ State Delegates they will sponsor to attend Syringa Idaho Girls’ State at the Northwest Nazarene college in Nampa. Selected, as delegates were Debra Evans, Carlie Stewart and Ciara Ward.

A long time ago, Dennis Evans told his baseball team “If you win the State title, I will shave off my mustache!” Dennis believes that was before the time of his current team, but apparently the promise was passed down. On the way home from the State tournament the subject was brought up. Dennis thinks he might have gotten out of fulfilling the promise except for his little grandson who kept saying, “Grandpa, you said you would shave off your mustache if they won.” The deed was actually performed right on the bus with a bottle of lotion. “About all that did was gum up the razor,” laughs Dennis. “I think I pulled out more than I shaved off.” 

20 YEARS AGO (2006)

Debi Healy was honored recently as a Friend of Education by the faculty and staff at Malad Elementary. Healy started working for the Oneida School District seven years ago as a Community Resource Worker. She was able to get an after-school program started shortly afterwards, helping students with homework after school. The students were also able to take other classes in the afternoon and work on improving test scores.

Leading the FFA for 2006 – 2007 will be Kiersten Cordingly, Clayton Eliason, Shane Price, Kathy Evans, Logan Alder, Patrick Evans, Kooper Daniels, Jentry Friedel and Devin Skidmore.

The eighth grade boys made it a clean sweep of the district trophies during their career in the middle school. The girls brought home the second place trophy this year. The teams included Jessie Corbridge, Mariah Thibedeau, Karen Cudney, Amy Evans, Robbie Dorius, Ashley Bercier, Katrina Martin, Sara Scouten, Brianna Galindo, Sean Fuhriman, Tallen Boyer, Jordan Schwartz, Eric Ward, Caleb Bennett, Jordan Hansen, Kaden Goddard, Riker Carter, Stephanie Johnson and Rikki Robbins.

30 YEARS AGO (1996)

Oneida County Hospital is gearing up for laproscopic surgeries, expected to begin being offered in Malad next month. Local physicians are currently in training, as are twelve R.N.s and L.P.N.s who will assist. They are traveling to the Brigham City Community Hospital, in Brigham City, Utah, and Franklin County Medical center, in Preston, to master necessary skills.

Students on the winter quarter honor roll at Utah State University have been announced by Val R. Christensen vice president for student services. A student must carry 15 or more credit hours and earn a 3.5 or better grade point average to achieve honor roll. Honor students from Malad are Corey R. Bybee, Business major; Travis Lee Allen, Bethany Dredge, and Angela Willie, all in Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences; and Kellianne Jensen, Science.

Best All Around Cowboy and Cowgirl at Malad High School are a brother and sister duo, Kade and Maysi Price. They walked away with top honors at the 8th District High School Rodeo, held last weekend in Montpelier.

The Women’s Bowling Association recently added LaVar Bowen’s name to the Cecil John Bowlers’ Hall of Fame. Making the presentation on May 29, was Peggy Smith, a member of the committee, and Carla Williams, Association Secretary.

40 YEARS AGO (1986)

Heather Davis, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Parley Davis was crowned Malad Junior Miss and with the title received a $1,800 scholarship to Utah State University. First Runner-up was Alina Marble, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bert Marble and she will received a $1,000 scholarship from Utah State University.  Placing second was Vickie Jenson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Jenson. She also will receive a $1,000 scholarship to Utah State University. Named “Miss Spirit” of the Junior Miss was Paula Madsen, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Madsen.

Reed Facer has been re-elected to serve as Commander of the American Legion Ernest W. Jones Post 65 for the coming year. 

Apral Ipsen has been called to serve in the Dominican Republic, Santo Domingo Mission. She will enter the Mission Training Center on June 18th to learn the Spanish language. Apral is the daughter of President and Mrs. Foster Ipsen.

Lance Corporal Steve Treasure of Malad received notification that he had been awarded a Certificate of Commendation from the United States Marine Corps for outstanding performance of duty while assigned as a dump truck operator. Treasure received this recognition for fulfillment of duties while stationed with the Marine Amphibious Unit Support Group 35 in the Pacific from August 1985 to January 1986.

50 YEARS AGO (1976)

 “From dawn to setting sun, a woman’s work is never done.” Pictured in The Idaho Enterprise, six Pioneer women demonstrated the aptness of this old adage before Idaho Falls channel 8 KID television cameramen. The Oneida County bicentennial committee staged a number of events planned by members for July 29-31, patriotic celebration, and TV men filmed and interviewed participants. A short sketch of Oneida’s bicentennial plans aired to Idaho TV viewers, and channel 8 remarked how unique Oneida was in receiving strong county-wide support. Hardworking ladies filmed were Sherrie Daniels, Pearl Jones, Lola Evans, Pat Williams, Pauline Kent and Joan Leavitt.

Taking over the student body leadership next year will be the following Malad High School Dragons: Garry Hess, president; Carilyn Showell, vice president; Danece Daniels, head cheer leader; Cathy Hill, secretary; Rhonda Hess, historian and Bob Sorensen, business manager. 

Sheriff Wharton noted that two juveniles from Malad had been apprehended for the MHS bombing incident, and would be appearing in juvenile court.

The Grit Shop is hosting a grand opening all this week, with a drawing for top western prizes on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. capping off the celebration. All are welcome to drop by and sign up for the grand drawing, and may find themselves winners of a pair of Tony Lama boots, Carmen shirts, hiking boots, or shotgun chaps. Although the store has been open since December, Grit Shop owner Dale Price explains that he now has in stock nearly all the merchandise he’s ordered, including Utah saddles, name brand cowboy boots, hats, shirts, pants and more.

60 YEARS AGO (1966)

Boyd Baker, a freshman at the University of Idaho, was recently initiated into Alpha Kappa PSI, a national professional business fraternity. Boyd is also a member of Sigma Nu fraternity, the Intercollegiate Knights, service organization, and participates in other student activities.

70 YEARS AGO (1956)

Oneida County delegates to the American Legion Auxiliary’s annual Girls’ State are Carolyn Call, Lugene Peterson, Judy Jones and Erma Jean Dorius.

One of Malad Valley’s worst hail storms struck Thursday and caused damage to crops estimated at $100,000 by County Agent M. C. Grover. The agent said that approximately 8,000 acres planted to wheat, alfalfa, barley, peas and beets were hit at St. John, on the St. John Bench, Deep Creek section and extended from St. John to approximately one mile south of Highway 37 in Malad Valley.

New assistant to Jack Gardner, basketball coach at the University of Utah, is LaDell Anderson, former Utah Aggie cage star and a native of Malad.

Tracing the history of Oneida County from 1818 to 1821, when Donald McKenzie passed through the Malad Valley, W. W. Thomas points out in the current issue of Scenic Idaho, that today this area is famous for its alfalfa, crested wheat, tall wheat and other grass seeds. With a colorful and tempestuous past, Malad during recent years has built a modern hospital, a half-million dollar school, as well as boasts the best lighted athletic field for a town of its size in the state. Pictorially this issue of Scenic Idaho shows Roy Daniels, Oneida commissioner, inspecting a fine group of Herefords, the new Malad School building, the Oneida County Court House, Nurse Frances Bartlett inspecting equipment in the county hospitals operating room, members of the Volunteer Fire Department, American Legion Hall and the “Y” at Bannock and Main Streets.

80 YEARS AGO (1946)

Oneida County farmers are securing ample labor so far this season, M. C. Grover, county agent, states. On the average of about 30 German prisoners of war from the camp at Tremonton have been brought to Malad Valley each day to work in the sugar beet fields since May 16.

Cpl. John J. Williams, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Williams, Sr., was discharged from the Army at Fort Douglas on May 24. Cpl. Williams, who served 17 months overseas as an infantryman with the 309th Infantry Regiment is authorized to wear the E.T.O. ribbon with three battle stars, good conduct medal, combat infantryman’s badge, Distinguished Unit Citation, Bronze star and the victory ribbon. He was inducted into the army April 27, 1944.

Second Lt. Virginia Ripley, daughter of Mrs. Annie Ripley, arrived home on terminal leave. Lt. Ripley entered the Army Nurse Corps February 5, 1945 and has spent seven months in the Aleutian Islands. She reached Camp Beale, California on May 15, 1946. She has the Asiatic-Pacific ribbon and Victory medal. 

Leonard R. Hughes, F 1/c, son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas M. Hughes arrived in Malad from Charleston, South Carolina. Leonard left for Farragut, Idaho, where he will receive his discharge from the Navy.

Mr. and Mrs. Milton T. Jones, daughter, Lauralee, son, Melvel, Miss Evelyn Jones and Barney P. Jones attended the commencement exercises at the Albion State Normal School Monday at which time AJay Jones, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jones, was a member of the graduating class.
