5 YEARS AGO (2021)
With this week's publication, The Idaho Enterprise is under new ownership. The Idaho Enterprise will now be published by Loyal Perch Media, a Utah company that publishes 20 newspapers and 6 monthly magazines. The company is managed by Bryan Scott, who has been publishing newspapers in Utah and North Dakota for the last 10 years. Scott is the grandson of Gerald and Donna Scott and graduated from Malad High School in 2001.
There were two Yards of the Month named for the month of May in Malad. One is the yard of Tim and Carol Jones, and the other is the storefront of Holiday Barn and Thrift Store.
Ireland Bank released a statement this week congratulating Deneice Tubbs on her retirement as of May 31, 2021. Deneice is currently the Vice President and Internal Auditor. She has worked for the bank for 23 years, holding positions including Proof Operator, Returns Clerk, Assistant Internal Auditor, and Internal Auditor.
Malad High School held their 108th annual Commencement Exercises on Wednesday, May 26, at Malad High School. There were 58 students graduating from Mald High School. 27 of these students had also earned a diploma from the Southeastern Idaho Technical Charter School (SEITec).
10 YEARS AGO (2016)
On Saturday, June 4, the 25th Annual Malad Classic Car Show was enjoyed by Malad residents. Approximately 75 cars, pickups and motorcycles lined Main Street and Oneida County residents enjoyed visiting during the day and choosing their favorite car.
Once again, disc jockey J.C. Hackett played rock and roll oldies while visitors visited each entry and talked with owners.
Robert Wray and Luke Steffenhagen of Pack #427 received their Eagle Scout awards on Sunday evening, June 5. Robert built a shooting bench for the shooting range and Luke’s project was raising organ donor awareness.
Several students earned state and nationally recognized certifications in the health care field and many are beginning their health care careers as sophomores in high school, according to Rachel Madsen, Administrator of the local charter school SEITec.
Certified Nursing Assistants are Natalie Peterson, Sierra McClain, Paityn Tripp, Krista Rowley, Jacee McClellan, Abbey Thomas, Naomi Corbridge and Paige Gunter.
Training as EMTs with the Oneida Ambulance crew are Abbey Thomas, Elizabeth Clark, Krista Rowley, Natalie Peterson, Kaylee Origer, Ivana Hernandez, MaCall Smith and Sierra McClain.
Hugo Ramos and Calvin Willie had a chance to compete for the 5th District in the All-Star Football Game played last week in Blackfoot.
The recently selected Malad High School Cheerleaders for the 2016 - 2017 school year will be the following: Jordan Brown, Ashlynn Brown, Traslen Hill, Tristin Bailey, MaTece Davis, Brenna Wiser, Sadie Giles, Abby Timothy, Bracken Degn, Abby Goddard, Brenna Williams, Bree Daniels, Hailee Schwartz, Kelsey Owens and Sami Williams.

15 YEARS AGO (2011) The Friends of Education Award at Malad Elementary was presented by Robert Hannah (left) to Trina and Brent Grote (right) for the contributions above and beyond the call of duty at Malad Elementary.
On June 24 at the Malad City Park, Brad Bonar, Jr., one of the most talented close-up magicians in the country will make his appearance for one night only to kick off the first annual Summer Concert series sponsored by the Malad Area Chamber of Commerce.
Plans are being solidified for the annual 4th of July celebration. The theme of this year’s celebration will be “Hat’s Off to the U.S.A.”.
Tazya Williams, daughter of Mike and Tami Williams graduated from Utah State University in May 2011 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Broadcast Journalism. Williams is presently residing in Salt Lake City and is currently employed at Fox 13 as a news producer.
Tina and Brent Grote were presented with the “Friends of Education” award at the Malad Elementary on Wednesday, May 25. The Grotes were selected by the administration and staff of the school for “all the extras they do,” according to Principal Dotty Evanson.
Malad Elementary School presented its annual Talent Show, showcasing the talents of many of the students at the school on May 15. This year for the final number, without the knowledge of Music Director Helen Ward, the students all participated in a Flash Mob Dance to “Do-Re-Mi” from the musical, “Sound of Music.” Moriah Ihler taught the students the dance.
20 YEARS AGO (2006)
Members of the Oneida Quilters have enjoyed making a special pieced quilt for the Welsh Festival. The quilt shows a variety of symbols from Wales. Celtic designs with the colors red, green, black and white are carried throughout the blocks.
Tori Hill finished in the Top 10 in the National Business Professionals of America (BPA) competition, held May 10 to 13 in Orlando, Florida.
Malad Lions Club officers for the 2006-07 year were installed by Idaho Lions Club District Governor, Walter Stephenson, on June 1. The installation ceremony was conducted at the Malad City Park during a joint meeting in which guests and spouses were invited. Ray Francom was installed as president; Larry Knudsen, 1st vice president; Scott McMurtrey, 2nd vice president; Odell Rice, secretary; Gordon Griffiths, treasurer; John Wolf, Lion Tamer; and AJay Jones, Tail Twister. The Directors are Rex Robbins, Tom Parry, Dave Corbridge, Ed Thorpe, Ken Moss and Todd Winder. Tom Strah is over publicity.
Selected to serve as the 2006 – 2007 Seminary Council are Dustin Larsen as president. Other council members include: Luke Beck, Clayton Eliason, Mattie Jones, Karen Moss, Bowdrie Price, Shane Price, Jessica Salter, and Katie Wray.
30 YEARS AGO (1996)
The Oneida School District Board of Trustees will host a groundbreaking ceremony on June 13, officially signaling the start of construction of the new Malad Middle School. The ceremony will be held at the new school site on Jenkins Avenue. The Malad Middle School will be ready for occupancy in the fall of 1997, and will house students in grades six, seven and eight.
Over 100 world-class cyclists, along with 300 crewmembers, are expected in Malad June 21 for the finish of the Pocatello – Malad leg of the PowerBar International Women’s Challenge. The cyclists will leave Pocatello about noon that day, travel through Arbon Valley, over the Holbrook summit on Highway 38, to 90 South Main in Malad. Finishing time is estimated to be about 2:30 p.m.
Bill Asay, 13-year Scoutmaster for St. John Ward’s Troop 473, has been awarded scouting’s highest leader honor, the Silver Beaver. Bill was escorted by his father-in-law, Max King during a ceremony at Pocatello’s Quality Inn. King is himself a Silver Beaver recipient, having received the award 20 years earlier.
Local residents were surprised to see a Navy land boat sailing through Malad. Actually, the LCM-8 was aboard a commercial transport trailer, being hauled from Tacoma, Washington, to Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin. The huge boat was 21 feet wide, 164 feet long, and weighed 220,000 pounds. The rig, which required three flag cars, traveled between 5-and-40 mph, depending on conditions.
40 YEARS AGO (1986)
Three local Karate students brought home trophies from the 16th Annual Utah Karate Championship held in Salt Lake City on May 17. Pictured in The Idaho Enterprise are Kurtis Kennedy, 2nd place; Brian Jeppsen, 3rd place and Scott Horsley, 1st place.
Shirlee Ward was recently elected to serve as president of Ernest W. Jones Unit 65 American Legion Auxiliary for the coming year. Other officers elected are Linda Facer and Penny Blaisdell, vice presidents; Carrie Hess, sergeant-at-arms; Pam Thorne, chaplain; Chris Evans, historian and Fern Thomas was re-elected secretary and treasurer.
Capturing Girls’ All Around title was Cherie Weeks, who is pictured in The Idaho Enterprise with the saddle she won and also wearing one of her five silver buckles that she won in various events at the 4th District High School Rodeo. Cherie will be going to State completion for Breakaway, Cow Cutting, Pole Bending and Goat Tying. Dale Jones placed 1st in the District competition in the Bareback Division and Travis Palmer brought forth another Malad 1st place in the Saddle Bronc Division. They will both be headed for State. Andy Anderson and Bill Harrison will also be going to State tying for 4th place in the Team Roping Division. Wendy John the sixth contestant from Malad to be going to State will be going in the Cow Cutting Division.
First place honors in the Cub Scout Day Camp poster contest went to the Wolf Den No. 1 of Pack 458. Pack members are Jeff Arnell, Jason Broberg, Josh Gugelman, David Crowther, Ryan Jacobsen, J.D. Tovey and Erick Griffiths. Cub Master is Gloria Tubbs.
50 YEARS AGO (1976)
The Oneida County Bicentennial committee has announced the selection of Ray and Lola Roe as senior king and queen, for the upcoming July 29 – 31 festivities. Lending their support to the three-day patriotic program are Farrell Daniels, chairman, Oneida County Commissioners; Reed Smith, general chairman of the bicentennial committee; Mike Broadhead, president, Malad Chamber of Commerce; and Mayor J. Marvin Hess.
Sheldon Vaughan was among the recent graduates of Utah State University at Logan. He earned his bachelor degree in business education. Sheldon is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Vaughan and is married to the former Janice Alder. They have a six-month old son, Brandon.
Brad Bowen, a recent graduate of Malad High School, auditioned and was accepted to tour Europe with “America’s Youth in Concert”. This group combines the talents of selected high school age students throughout the country in a band and chorus. The goal is for them to be junior ambassadors for the United States in Europe through music.
Three Malad teachers from the elementary and High School, Tim Thorpe, Jarene Fluckinger and Zane Gill, are leaving the Oneida School district to assume new positions in Blackfoot, Star Valley, Wyoming and Berlin, Germany.
60 YEARS AGO (1966)
The strike of engineers and operators and iron workers unions against the Associated General Contractors in this area had resulted in some 26 men leaving their jobs at the St. John Irrigation Company’s Daniels dam site, Louis Deschamps, company president, reports.
Oneida Sheriff Kenneth Wharton this week announced that Rick Servoss has been employed as deputy sheriff to succeed Ralph Burton who is now serving as Malad Chief of Police. Mr. Servoss is a native of Malad. He recently purchased a farm south of Malad, and is making his home there with his wife, the former Kay John, and their son, Ricky, age 3.
Malad High School Rodeo Club will have five of its members competing this week at the state meet in Nampa, Kristy Champneys, Kent Smith, Suzanne Harrison, Joan Harrison and Alan Carter. Kristy was named “Best All Around Cowgirl” and second runner-up to the queen. Kent was runner-up for the “Best All Around Cowboy” title.
“People Who Make Oneida” – A man who goes quietly about doing what needs to be done on various community projects is Keith Jones. He has given freely many hours of work in community projects. He is a member of the Malad Volunteer Fire Department; a director of the Malad Chamber of Commerce and a past president; an active member of the Eagles Lodge, and a former member of the Oneida Fair Board. Keith is an ardent sports fan and has taken much interest promoting sports in the community. With his brother, Roland, he operates Jones Hardware & Implement Co. He and his wife, Mary Lou, have a daughter, Marie and a son, Bob.
70 YEARS AGO (1956)
At commencement exercises held Saturday at USAC, Logan, Jay P. Bills received a BS degree from the school of engineering. Mr. Bills spent the remainder of the weekend in Malad as guest of Miss Shirley South at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John South, who were present at the exercises.
Farrell Jay Williams, son of Mr. and Mrs. John H. Williams, received a BS degree in secretarial training, and Reed Richard Probst, grandson of Dr. and Mrs. Thomas W. Richards received a BA Degree in English from the University of Utah’s 87th annual commencement exercises.
Max Pilgrim of the Malad Lions Club was elected governor of District No. 39E, at the meeting of the Idaho Lions from districts No. 39E and 39W at Sun Valley this past weekend.
Idaho veterans and their families received more than $17,141,086 in benefit payments and services through the veteran’s administration during fiscal year 1955.
DeLon Archibald, chapter FFA president for the year 1956-57, was elected at a recent district meeting to the office of district treasurer.
