Dragons bring home State trophies for track

Jun 04, 2026 11:44AM ● By Allison Eliason

The Men’s track and field team collectively placed 2nd at the IHSAA state meet.

Competing in the culminating state track meet had been on the horizon for many MHS athletes. The two-day event served as a milestone for many, a day set aside to stand on the podium, medal with teammates, and reach personal goals they had worked toward all season long. For many, those dreams were realized, while for others, the accomplishment came in simply leaving everything they had on the track.

The meet began Friday morning at 9:30 a.m. with the 3200M race. Senior Bostyn Burbidge and freshman Jace Nalder stepped up to the starting line to kick off the meet for the MHS team. Each had a different plan in mind — Burbidge thinking through his times and splits, Nalder mentally saying, “I’m simply racing to win!” As the minutes and laps ticked down, it was Malad’s Burbidge who crossed the finish line first, winning the race with a time of 9:36.50. Not far behind was Nalder, running an incredible personal-best time of 9:59.18.

Their counterparts in the girls 3200M had an excellent showing as well, with Aezlyn Summers earning sixth place with a personal-best time of 12:04.54, followed by teammates Ellie Angell and Kallee Talbot. The strong MHS finishes provided exactly the spark Malad needed to begin the season-ending meet.

While the track featured preliminary races for the remainder of the day, several Malad athletes competed in their final field events. At the pole vault pits, Braun Nalder honed in on the event, eventually clearing 13’ to finish in fourth place. Across the field, several MHS jumpers competed in the high jump and triple jump, with multiple athletes earning spots on the podium. Braun Nalder placed first in the triple jump, securing the win with a jump of 42’ 9”. In the high jump, senior Matt Briscoe excelled with a height of 5’ 10” to medal in sixth place. Brielle Bastian jumped 33’ 7.5” for fifth place in the triple jump, while Somerli Nalder competed in the long jump as well.

Justin Toone competed in multiple field events throughout the day, including javelin, high jump, and triple jump. Mordecai Charles marked a personal record in the shot put, becoming the first MHS boys thrower to qualify for state in several years, an accomplishment he had worked toward for four seasons.

The pressure mounted as day two of the meet began, with final races and the remaining field events set to determine team standings. Kaycee Venable competed in the pole vault, finishing sixth with a height of 9’. Izzy Haycock and Tavanie Steed stood out in the javelin event, both throwing personal records of 112’ 1” and 98’ 11” to take second and sixth place, respectively. Braun Nalder rounded out the long jump placers in sixth with a distance of 20’ 3.75”.

As the field events closed out, the focus turned heavily to the racing events, where Malad delivered a number of standout performances. Seniors Burbidge (1:59.78, 4:30.82) and Levi Angell (2:00.13, 4:41.92) placed third and fourth in both the 800M and 1600M races, giving everything they had and ending their track careers with personal records in both events. Summers and Ellie Angell similarly set new personal bests in the 800M and 1600M races. Braun Nalder placed second in the 300M hurdles with a time of 39.52. In a heartbreaking moment, Venable, who appeared poised to win the 300M hurdles, clipped the final hurdle and was unable to finish the race.

Brielle Bastian led the field in the 400M race, winning with a personal-record time of 59.43. Halie Palmer took fifth in the event with a time of 1:02.37. Palmer also raced in the 200M finals, finishing fourth in 26.58.

Intermixed throughout the meet, the MHS relay teams also found success at the finish line. The boys medley relay team of Brex Martinsen, Parker Price, Levi Angell, and Burbidge placed third with a time of 3:36.24. Matt Briscoe, Brex Martinsen, Rylinn Beck, and Easton Green took fifth in the 4x200 relay with a time of 1:34.32. Finishing the final event of the meet, the 4x400 relay team of Levi Angell, Jeremiah Peterson, Beckston Green, and Parker Price placed sixth, helping secure the Malad boys team as state runner-up.

A fourth place finish for the girls track and field team at the IHSAA meet.

The MHS girls team also saw success in the relays, with each team earning a medal finish. The medley relay team of Annika Wright, Karlee Williams, Brielle Bastian, and Halie Palmer placed third with a time of 1:53.16. In the final race and last opportunity to earn team points, Bastian, Somerli Nalder, Venable, and Palmer captured second place in the 4x400 relay with a time of 4:16.58.

Because athletes do not compete in a perfect world, the final meet of the season brought its share of frustrations, heartbreaks, and moments of second-guessing. Yet alongside those disappointments came breakthrough performances, unexpected finishes, and personal records that reflected months of dedication and hard work. Coaches spoke proudly of the way athletes responded when events did not go as planned, continuing to compete with resilience and determination. For the seniors especially, the meet served as a fitting conclusion to their careers, finishing strong while leaving behind a standard of effort and commitment for the younger athletes to follow.
