The Malad Dragon baseball team put together an impressive stretch of games, showcasing resilience, offensive firepower, and strong pitching in a series of wins over Marsh Valley, Wendell, Declo, and Soda Springs as they played through their final regular season games.
Malad’s battle with Marsh Valley Tuesday, April 21 proved to be the most dramatic of the stretch. After falling behind early on a three-run home run in the first inning, the Dragons responded quickly when Dawsyn Peterson launched a two-run homer to cut the deficit.
The game remained a back and forth contest, with the MHS team taking a 6–3 lead before Marsh Valley answered with a three-run home run of their own to tie the game and later reclaim a 7–6 advantage.
But Malad came back to deliver when it mattered most. In the sixth inning, the Dragons capitalized on a key defensive mistake by the Eagles that allowed three runs to score, followed by an RBI single from Ethan Horsley. That late surge secured a 10–7 victory in a game defined by momentum swings and timely hitting.
The Dragons carried that energy into a dominant performance against Wendell Friday, April 24. Pitcher Kurt Ward set the tone early by striking out three consecutive batters in the first inning. Easton Green sparked the lineup with aggressive baserunning, while Cale Briggs and Ward each drove in runs to build an early lead.
Wendell briefly fought back to tie the game at 3–3 in the third inning, but Malad responded to squash any thoughts of a comeback. A two-run home run from Carter Carey in the fourth inning helped break the game open. The Dragons continued to pile on runs through aggressive baserunning and clutch hits. Strong pitching from Brooks Blaisdell and Holdyn Higley shut down Wendell the remainder of the game, leading to a convincing 12–3 win.
Against Declo, Malad once again demonstrated its ability to capitalize on opportunities. The Dragons jumped out to an early lead, using speed on the bases and forcing defensive mistakes. Declo managed to score once in the second inning, but Malad’s pitching staff took over from there. Hudson Daniels was particularly effective in relief, striking out the side in the third inning and keeping Declo off balance.
Offensively, Malad continued to apply pressure with timely hits from Brooks Blaisdell and others, while Ward added another RBI double. A big fifth inning, highlighted by a two-run single from Peterson, put the game out of reach. The Dragons cruised to an 11–1 victory, combining efficient pitching with opportunistic offense.
Malad closed out the stretch with its most explosive performance in a 13–2 win over Soda Springs on Monday, April 27. The Dragons wasted no time, scoring early and often while taking advantage of the Cardinal’s defensive mistakes. The highlight came in the second inning when Peterson blasted a home run to break the game wide open.
The MHS team continued to add runs through a mix of strong hitting, aggressive baserunning, and productive outs. Hudson Daniels contributed multiple RBIs, while the offense consistently found ways to pressure the defense. On the mound, Blaisdell delivered a strong outing, limiting Soda Springs’ chances and working efficiently with solid defensive support behind him.
Closing out the season, Malad displayed their growth, talent, and execution that will continue to prove a threat to any opponent on the field.. The lineup consistently produced runs, whether through power hitting or small-ball execution, while the pitching staff delivered key outs and limited opponents’ scoring opportunities. Combined with aggressive baserunning and the ability to capitalize on opponents’ mistakes, the Dragons showed why they are a team capable of controlling games in multiple ways.
The Dragons will host the upcoming district tournament beginning Wednesday, April 29. As high seed, the MHS team will also receive a bye, playing Thursday evening against the winner of the Soda Springs vs Lighthouse Christian game.
