Lady Dragons strong as season winds down

The Lady Dragons split their games over the weekend, dropping a tough game in the cold to Wendell on Friday, April 24 before dominating in their contest against Declo.  Monday afternoon they tallied another win as they traveled to Firth to take on the Cougars.  Entering their final week of the regular season, the MHS team sits with a record of 15-4.

In their matchup against Wendell, Malad stayed competitive early in a tightly contested game. Both teams relied on strong pitching through the opening innings, with Liddia Gonzalez setting the tone in the circle by keeping Wendell hitters off balance and recording key strikeouts. Wendell broke through first in the third inning, taking advantage of defensive errors to take a 1–0 lead. Malad answered in the bottom half, executing a well-timed rally that ended with a sacrifice fly from Logan Maroney to tie the game.

The contest remained close through four innings, with defense and pitching controlling the pace.  A decisive momentum shift in Wendell’s favor in the fifth inning allowed them to build a multi-run lead. Malad managed to respond with a run on a wild pitch, but struggled to create a consistent offensive push. Wendell continued to add runs in the sixth before delivering a two-run home run in the seventh inning followed by a series of extra-base hits that pushed the game out of reach. Despite the 11–2 loss, Malad showed strong early execution and flashes of solid defensive and pitching play.

The Lady Dragons quickly rebounded in their next game the following day as they took on the Declo Hornets. After Gonzalez opened with a scoreless first inning, Malad’s offense erupted immediately. Harlee Maddox set the tone with a leadoff single, and the lineup followed with disciplined at-bats and aggressive baserunning. Early runs came through a combination of productive outs and timely hits, before Gonzalez ignited the offense further with a two-run home run.

The second inning turned into a full offensive showcase. Stella Merja and Sarah Toone each delivered extra-base hits, including a home run, while the lineup continued to string together hits from top to bottom. Karlee Blaisdell, Aspen Bingham, and Maddox all contributed key RBIs, and Aubrey Shulz delivered one of the biggest moments with a three-run home run. By the end of the inning, Malad had surged to a commanding double-digit lead.

Gonzalez remained in control throughout the game, limiting Declo’s offense and allowing only minimal scoring. Even when Declo managed to get on the board, Malad responded immediately with additional runs, continuing to apply pressure offensively. The Dragons combined strong hitting, patience at the plate, and keen baserunning to claim a dominating win in a complete team performance.

Monday afternoon showcased another stellar win as Malad put their offensive firepower on full display. After loading the bases in the first inning, the Lady Dragons capitalized with a series of disciplined at-bats, forcing in runs through walks and contact plays. The highlight came when Aspen Bingham launched a home run to center field, capping a huge opening inning and giving Malad early control.

Defensively, Gonzalez continued to bring tough pitching in the circle, working efficiently and shutting down early scoring chances. After a brief lull, Malad extended its lead in the third inning with RBI hits from Blaisdell and Maddox.

Firth managed to push across a pair of runs in the bottom half of the third, taking advantage of walks and a wild pitch, but Malad quickly responded with its most explosive inning of the game. The fourth inning featured a relentless offensive surge, highlighted by a two-run double from Blaisdell, an RBI single from Maddox, and a two-run single from Shulz. Additional contributions from Merja and Toone helped extend the lead even further, putting the game firmly out of reach.

The MHS team will play two final conference games to end the regular season.  Malad will host the West Side Pirates in their last home game Wednesday, April 29 before traveling to Soda Springs the following day.
