5 YEARS AGO (2021)

The Scout Mountain District Recognition banquet was held Tuesday evening April 13 in McCammon where Bill Lewis of Malad was recognized as the Scout Leader of the Year for the district.

Brian Jeppsen, Michael J. Hess, and Tony McClain were also recognized on Tuesday, April 13 at the Scout Mountain District Scout banquet with the William D. Boyce New Unit Organizer Award for the creation of Malad's community Scout troop – Troop 1776.

The Oneida Education Foundation honored its new inductees to the OEF Heritage Club and those advancing to a higher level in the Heritage Club at a drive-by event on Wednesday, April 14, 2021. Attendees were treated to cookies and bottles of water and received certificates to recognize their generosity to the students, teachers, and schools of Oneida County.

Diane Williams and Rex Williams earned the titles of Bowler of the Year in a roll off held Thursday, April 15, 2021. Diane rolled a 644 series, and Rex tallied a 678 series. They were each presented $50 for their efforts.

10 YEARS AGO (2016)

The Grand Teton Council of the Boy Scouts of America held its annual Recognition Dinner for the Malad District on Wednesday, April 13, at the Malad Stake Center. The 2015 Malad District Eagle Scouts were recognized. They were Wyatt Hubbard, Hayden Green, Kalob Ihler, Keegan Peterson, Gabriel Cobabe, and Dylan Thorpe. Special awards were then presented. The District Award of Merit was presented to Tony McClain and Lloyd Bush. The Community Service award went to Jean Thomas. Gloria Tubbs was honored as a member of the “Hall of Fame.” Other awards presented included the Outstanding Roundtable and Outstanding District Committee Service Award to Bobbie Garrett and The Unit Chairperson of the Year Award to Jaime Olsen.

Malad High School’s FCCLA (Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America) members attended the Idaho FCCLA State Leadership Conference. The conference was held Wednesday through Friday, April 6 – 8, at the Riverside Hotel in Boise. Over 300 Idaho students were in attendance. Six students from Malad High School made the trip to Boise this year. Those attending from Malad were Braxton Allen, Liccy Bernal, Caitlyn Marshall, Ashlyn Price, and Hannah Ryver. Their advisor, Sarah Robbins, accompanied them.

Natalie Jensen earned first place in Focus on Children – Occupational, earning the gold medal and qualifying to compete at Nationals. Jensen was also an Idaho State FCCLA Officer this year and helped to plan and run the annual state convention in Boise.

The Malad Chapter of the FFA had 23 members attend the 85th annual Idaho State FFA Leadership Conference Held in Twin Falls. Those attending were Advisor Stephanie Whipple, Michaela Quinn, Jaicee Palmer, Katie Mizrasi, Aubree Davis, Samantha Daniels, BreAnn Weeks, Chet Potter, Dallin Ward, Mattie Semrad, Makyla Madsen, Daysia Harris, Rayston Nelson, Brady Clark, Dylan Brown, Sadie Simpson, Cree Sweeten, Cody Weeks, Taber Paskett, Ben Waldron, Rhett Daniels, Hayley Brown, and Shawnee Simpson.

Malad had eight Malad High School students that earned their State Farmer Degrees that were presented at the conference. Those receiving their awards were Sadie Simpson, Aubree Davis, Jaicee Palmer, Katie Mizrasi, BreAnn Weeks, Taber Paskett, Bradey Clark, and Rhett Daniels

Samantha Daniels retired form service as the Idaho State FFA Treasurer at the recent State Leadership Conference. Her brother Rhett Daniels was able to introduce her and Malad Chapter Member Chet Potter was able to bang the final gavel to signal Daniels’ retirement.

15 YEARS AGO (2011)

15 YEARS AGO (2011) Lucile Harrison

 The Oneida County Hall of Fame Committee selected Lucile Harrison for her outstanding achievements in education and community service. She will be honored at the Hall of Fame banquet, May 24.

Amanda Butterfield has been chosen to emcee the Distinguished Young Woman of Malad event on April 30 at the Malad Elementary School auditorium. Amanda is familiar to some because for ten years she has anchored and reported for local television stations in Oregon and Utah.

The Region VI Mental Health Board has selected Major Mike Stayner, son of Dorothy Stayner of Malad, and the late Milo Stayner, and graduate of Malad High School, as the recipient of the prestigious Wilbert Cammack Award for 2010. The award was presented at the Human Development Center in Pocatello on April 13 in memory of Wilbert Cammack, a life-long advocate of people with mental illness and is given to someone who has made outstanding advocacy contributions on behalf of people with long-term mental illness. 

Earning special awards for the 2010-2011 season were several Malad High School wrestlers, including Jayden Moon, Chris Hill, D.J. Peabody, Nathan Eliason, Dan Blaisdell, Chris Hess, Wesley Peterson and Quinn Eliason.

Don Eliason states: “I’m the only one still going at my age.” Everyone thinks Don Eliason was born a cowboy! Certainly he started helping his dad, Chester Eliason, at a very young age. When he was about five years old he started helping on the farm by riding the derrick horse. He kept moving up the ladder until, at the age of 82, he continues to work on the ranch, working as hard as some men in their 50s, and loving every minute of it.

20 YEARS AGO (2006)

Malad Junior Miss Hailey Willie is set to turn her title over to another. The 2006 program, entitled “Let’s Get Ready To Rumble,” will feature 11 participants, vying for the chance to wear the crown.

March brought another month of winter to southeast Idaho, according to the latest snotel report from the Natural Resources Conservation Service in Malad. Linda Daniels, who monitors the site, said that colder temperatures and a moist storm track steadily added to the snowpack during the month. Daniels reports that March precipitation measured 5.2 inches, which is 173% of normal.

The Malad High School Chapter of the National Honor Society recently inducted in their newest members. The students inducted this year were the following: Logan Alder, Miya Alger, Blake Baker, Luke Beck, Brittany Buehler, Mary Coakley, Shannon Crowther, Tabitha Garrett, Tayja Grote, Jonathan Jensen, Mattie Jones, Dustin Larsen, Caleb Morrison, Karen Moss, Devin Plowman, Shane Price, Kristi Thomas, Ammon Treasure and Brady Tovey.

Malad High School’s FFA students placed high at judging contests held at BYU-I. Those participating in the events included Christina Greening, Kiersten Cordingly, Toni Finder, Kathy Evans, Patrick Evans, Josh Crisler, Ethan Reel and T.J. Daniels.

Earning their State FFA degrees this year were Shane Price, T.J. Daniels, Logan Alder, Clayton Eliason and Brittney Bosworth. 

30 YEARS AGO (1996)

Elder J. Lance Bird, son of Jeff and Irene Bird, of Holbrook, has accepted a call to serve in the Massachusetts Boston LDS Mission. He will enter the Missionary Training Center on May 8.

Ashlee Thorpe and Allison Broberg were both winners in the Regional ZCMI table settings contest. Ten schools, including Malad, participated in the contest with 30 table settings judged.

The American Legion Post 65 will be sending four delegates to the 53rd annual Idaho Gem Boys State. The 1996 session is slated for the week of June 2 – 8 at Gowen Field in Boise. During the selection process, Kurt Christen, Kyle Tubbs, Layne Richins and Kenny Moss received the judges’ nod to represent Oneida County this year. 

The new speed limits will go into effect on May 1st. The only highway affected in the Malad area will be I-15, and the speed limit will change to 75 MPH.

Four Maladians had a reunion in Manhattan March 31 as former Congressman Ralph Harding, former BYU Coach LaDell Andersen, former Colorado State Coach Jim Williams, and Malad High School Coach Terry Jones got together to take in the action and festivities of the NCAA Final-Four Basketball Championship.

40 YEARS AGO (1986)

Royce’s – Bee’s – Jones’ – Lub’s – whatever you call the confectionery at 72 Bannock Street, you are dated by the name you use, according to Anna Lou and Royce Jones. They will celebrate 40 years in the neighborhood store on April 26. Anna Lou said she could tell lots of stories about the happenings in their confectionery. The celebration will include horseshoe pitching in the parking lot, prizes and surprises throughout the day – and refreshments in the afternoon and evening.

Staff Sgt. Vernon Ronley Jones was presented the Meritorious Service Award from the United States Air Force Reserve, April 13, at Hill Air Force Base, Utah. He will depart April 19 for Bitbury Air Base, Germany, for two weeks for medical training at the hospital in Germany.

Jennifer Jones, daughter of Iris and Ervin Jones, graduated from Ricks College on April 17, with an associate’s degree in Professional Child Care and Education. Miss Jones was named Valedictorian of the Religious Family Living Division, speaking at the graduation exercises.

Sister Evelyn C. Nalder of Holbrook, Idaho, has received and accepted a call to serve a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Sister Nalder will serve for one year in the Alabama Bermlinham Mission.

50 YEARS AGO (1976)

Arms filled with roses, face wreathed in smiles and sparkling jeweled tiara on her head, Kathleen Colton was crowned Miss Malad City 1977 in an impressive evening ceremony, sponsored by the local Lions Club. Wendy Sweeten was selected first runner-up and Ann Jones was named second runner up. Selected Miss Congeniality by the five other beauty contestants was Karla Wakley.

Jones, chairman of the Library Board for 18 years. Watching the ground breaking are board members, Viva Burrie, Secretary; Don Eliason, Gail Dorius, vice president, and William G. Jenkins, treasurer. The new facility will be located immediately north of the Malad City Park.


Mountain Bell Telephone Company is celebrating its 100th birthday this year, and has lined up a special open house party for Malad, Monday May 10, at the local Bell office.

David Gary Jenson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe C. Jenson, has been called to serve in the LDS Tennessee Nashville Mission. He will enter the mission home on May 1.

Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Bybee have been notified that their daughter, Tracy, is recipient of a music scholarship for fall quarter from Utah State University at Logan where she plays first flute in the band.

Robert Naugler, son of Reverend and Mrs. S. Norman Naugler of Malad, has been elected senator of the School of Business at Boise State University, Boise. He is one of sixteen senators elected to govern the student body of over 10,000 at B.S.U. Bob is a junior, majoring in accounting he was a 1973 graduate of Malad High School.

60 YEARS AGO (1966)

John Moss, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bill Moss received his Eagle Scout award at the Court of Honor held at the Stake Building. The 14-year-old John is the second member of his family to receive the coveted Eagle award. His brother, Norval, also attained the rank when he was 14 years old. 

An Idaho Air Force ROTC Cadet, Mark Howard, son of Mr. and Mrs. William O. Howard, Malad, has been promoted to squadron commander of the newly formed 8552nd AFROTC Cadet group on the Brigham Young University campus. 

Announcement was made this week by County Agent M. C. Grover that Jill Sue Jones, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Oren J. Jones, has won the $200.00 Union Pacific Scholarship. This scholarship can be used at any land grant university.

‘People Who Make Oneida.’ Proof that in-laws can live together is demonstrated in Oneida County by Mr. and Mrs. Roy Davis, who, for a period of many years, had Mr. Davis’ mother, and Mrs. Davis’ parents all living with them, and all getting along very well together, too. Both are long-time residents. Mr. Davis is a retired farmer and shoemaker. He and Mrs. Davis are active in World War I veterans’ organizations and auxiliary. Mrs. Davis is active in the LDS Church organizations, and has for many years been organist for the different groups. She also plays the piano at funerals, for soloists, and as a soloist. The couple has six children, 21 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

70 YEARS AGO (1956)

Junior girls selected from Malad High School to attend the American Legion Auxiliary’s Girls’ State at Caldwell in June were announced at the Junior Prom. Those selected to attend are Erma Jean Dorius, Carolyn Call, Lugene Peterson and Judy A. Jones. Alternates are Kathleen Brodie, Verlaine Smith and Diane Gibble.

Top social event of the school year was held as the Class of ’57 presented the Junior Prom in honor of the seniors. Bob Summers and his orchestra provided the music for the dancing at the Malad Stake building and the theme “Deep Purple” was used in the decorations and programs.  To encourage the students to remain in Malad after the Prom, food was served at the school lunchroom to handle overflow from the cafes down town and a midnight movie was shown at the new Star Theatre. The committee members in charge of the Prom this year are Mark Vaughan, Dalene Moon, Deanna Davis, Lugene Peterson, Eric Jones, Margene Williams, Vern Budge, Kathleen Brodie, Gary Talbot, Dawnie Isaacson, Afton Wade, Ken Lusk, Verlaine Smith, Coleen Dives, Diane Gribble, Lois Kern, Mike Nicholas, Gary Baker, Carlyle Blaisdell, Carolyn Call, Gary Parry, Kathleen Smith, Judy Jones, Tom Zundell, Brent Williams.

80 YEARS AGO (1946)

S 2/c Cecil John, son of Mr. and Mrs. Nephi John and husband of the former Lavene Williams received his discharge from the Navy April 12, 1946 at Bremerton, Washington. He entered the service April 16, 1945. He has been at Guam since July 1945.  

Ren Ray Bowen, F 1/c, received his discharge from the Navy Seabees April 8. 1946 at Bremerton, Washington and arrived home April 10. He entered the service March 28, 1945 and spent four months at Pearl Harbor where he was assigned to the L.S.T. 1087.

Three students from Malad High School will enter the state declamation festival at Boise, April 19. They are Wesley Crowther, JoAnn Smith and Julia Ward.

Willard Anderson has been awarded the Daniels mail contract for a four-year period beginning July 1, Postmaster W. H. Thomas states. John Nielsen was awarded the Downey route.

S 1/c Ray C. Eliason was released from the U.S. Navy under the point system April 8, 1946 at Shoemaker, California. He entered the service in March 1945, and took his boot camp training at San Diego, California. He left for overseas in June 1945, and served aboard an attack cargo transport in the Pacific until December and spent the last four months in Japan. He is authorized to wear the Astatic-Pacific ribbon, American Theater Ribbon and the Victory Ribbon.
