5 YEARS AGO (2021)

Valedictorian and salutatorian for the Class of 2021 was recently announced by Malad High School, with Hallee Haycock named as valedictorian and Mikki Clark named as salutatorian. Both will speak during Commencement Exercises on May. 26.

On Saturday morning, lots of kids showed up at Malad City Park with parents in tow, carrying Easter baskets, or sometimes just a grocery sack, to fill with candy-filled plastic Easter eggs donated by residents and businesses.

Malad High School had nine students along with two advisors and three other adults explore many of the historical sites in the eastern United States last week as part of the Visions program. The tour is titled the Lady Liberty Tour.

The Malad High School group left last Wednesday, March 23, headed for the Salt Lake International Airport. Just days after the latest bombing in the airport in 

Brussels, the students were aware the security would be high as they headed to the airport but were able to board their flight and head off to the JFK Airport in New York City very early on Thursday, March 24. Rockland High School students accompanied Malad on this trip. Making the trip were: Aubree Davis, Rachel Green, Paige Gunter, Natalie Jensen, Ashley Rosenhoover, Keegan Peterson, Sadie Simpson, Shaylynn Ward, and Calvin Willie. Advisors for the trip were Julie Green and Brian Jadwin. Also joining the group to accompany their children on this memorable trip were Ginger Davis, Elaine Gunter, and Tina Simpson.

The 2015-2016 Malad High School wrestling season officially came to an end at the awards banquet on Friday, March 24. The wrestlers received their letters and other awards presented by the coaching staff. Wrestlers receiving awards at the banquet were Dallin Atkinson, Cody Weeks, Rhett Daniels, Chet Potter, Hazen Smith, Chase Davis, Tucker Hess, Kolby Driessen, Hugo Ramos and  Dallin Ward.

15 YEARS AGO (2011)

The USDA-Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS) recently welcomed Nathan Hamilton as the newly appointed Soil Conservationist at the Malad field office.

Beginning in early 1935, The Works Progress Administration (renamed during 1939 as the Work Projects Administration; WPA) employed millions to carry  out public works projects, including the construction of the old Oneida County Hospital building which is now the Oneida County Clinic. They also constructed two tennis courts and one running track. Rock walls around Harding Field are also included in the WPA projects in Oneida County, and a portion of the 2,653 lineal feet of retaining walls built during the years 1935 and 1943.  The Oneida County Courthouse, a WPA project, was completed in 1939. 

Paula and LaNae Wakley won the 1st Doubles, Division II, with a score of 1412, at the Idaho State Women’s Bowling Tournament.

The Malad High School Music Department had several students earn high ratings in the recent district solo-ensemble competition. Those competing were KayLee Teeples, Josselyn Ramos, Heather Origer, Ilan Anderson, Chris Austin, Josh Stevens, Jacob Tubbs and James Wright.

20 YEARS AGO (2006)

Danny Hess and Emily Treasure will represent the Malad High School Class of 2006 as Valedictorians with Hailey Willie as the class’s Salutatorian. Danny has maintained a 4.0 grade average and scored 29 on his ACT test. Emily has a 3.95 grade point average and scored an astounding 33 on her ACT test. Hailey has a 3.98 grade point average and scored a 27 on her ACT test. 

Class members who earned the right to be in the Top 10 Percent of the Class of 2006 includes Danny Hess, Emily Treasure, Hailey Willie, Lacy Davis, Chelsey Jenkins, Tyler Richards, Elizabeth Kent and Logan Pfeiffer.

The Top 25 Percent academically of the Class of 2006 will add in Elise Blaisdell, Ashelee Wakley, Janiece Stromberg, Natalie Hess, Bobby Hannah, Becky Colton, Caleb Morrison, Tazya Williams and Blake Baker.

After several years of study, Oneida County Commissioners have decided to put the jail proposal on the ballot for a general obligation bond. They unanimously passed a resolution to this effect. The decision was made upon the recommendation of the Oneida Jail Committee.

Malad’s After School Program is bringing something new to the community. April 13, the Ballo Capesso Ballet Company will perform “Pinocchio, A Real Puppet’s Story.” Ballo Capesso is beginning a new chapter with a ballet series designed to involve area students as both audience and performer. 

30 YEARS AGO (1996) 

 The Law Office of Whittier, Souza & Naftz has served notice to Oneida County that it is bowing out of its public defender contract at the end of 120 days if the firm doesn’t receive more money for services.

Incumbent Oneida County prosecutor David L. Evans (D) will be challenged at the polls this year with the candidacy filing of an attorney who currently resides and practices law in the state of Utah. Scott W. Holt, Syracuse, Utah, seeks the nod from Oneida County voters on the Republican ticket.

Elder Hutch H. Daniels, son of Joe and Eduarda Daniels, of Malad, has accepted a call to serve in the Brazil, Sao Paulo East LDS Mission. He will enter the Missionary Training Center on Wednesday April 17.

At the court of Honor held on March 23, in honor of Douglas Neal Crowther, he received the Eagle Scout Award. Doug has really enjoyed Scouts and set a goal when he was a Blazer Scout to get his Eagle before his 14th birthday. Through a lot of hard work and effort and a lot of fun, he accomplished his goal.

Bob Ray was honored at a Court of Honor on March 31st in the St. John Ward and was awarded his Eagle Scout Award. Bob organized and helped with the construction of the new horseshoe pits at the Malad City Park, along with members of Troop #475, and the Malad Horse Shoe Club. 

Nine-year-old Levi McKay Christiansen, son of Billy and Dawn Christiansen, is the 1996 Malad District “Cub Scout Youth Representative.” The contest was held in January. Levi has been a member of Pack  #475 for nearly two years. Others participating were Brayden Eliason, Lex Firth, Trevor Jones, Steven Mason and Trevor Ward. 

Dragon basketball standout Bryson Vaughan is this year’s unanimous pick for Idaho’s most outstanding A-3 basketball player. The 6-foot-2 senior guard was named last week as the All Area Player of the Year for the 1996 season. He was also named A-3 Player of the Year.

40 YEARS AGO (1986)

Lara Knutsen, daughter of Byron and Virginia Knutsen has been selected as the Valedictorian for the Class of 1986 and Lonny Ward, son of Trudy and Welton has been chosen as the Salutatorian.

The upper 10 Percent of the Class of 1986 are Lara Knutsen, Lonny Ward, Travis Atkinson, Heidi Broadhead, Cindy Howard and Don Jones. The Top 25 Percent academically of the Class of 1986 will add in Scott Smith, Heidi Peterson, Sharee Showell, Rod Sweeten, Brock Hill, Michelle Ward, David Jensen, Marc Pett and Dennis Willie. 

Nearly a year after ground breaking ceremonies on April 19th of last year, Hess Pumice rolled their first bags of pumice off the line at their new facility last Saturday. It was truly a momentous occasion for everyone connected with the local operation as the huge edifice and all of its equipment was carefully put into place.

At the present time fifteen German exchange students are staying in homes in Malad Valley and attending Malad High School as part of a German-American Student Exchange Program that is now in its fifth year of operation locally, the longest established German exchange still functioning in the state of Idaho.

50 YEARS AGO (1976)

When a breeze ripples through Malad stirring 240 Liberty Bell wind chimes, residents will remember Cub Scouts in Pack #451 both for adding a bit of music to the air and for helping relieve the tedium facing Hospital Patients here. Eleven scouts under Den Leader Vicki Ekstrom decided that sick people need television to get them through a long day. So these young salesmen went around town peddling bicentennial-styled wind chimes and made quite a pile of money for eight- and nine-year olds. They, along with Vicki, presented a $100 check to Dr. Gerald K. Goodenough, who announced he would match this donation. The group posed for a picture in front of a 15 x 8 ft. mural of the doctor’s ranch, which Lyn Goodenough painted for the new Medical Clinic. Scout-salesmen are Roger Tovey, David Evans, Donny Harding, John Wakley, Brad Nielsen, Tim Ekstrom, Brett Daniels, Rex Williams, Kevin Heindel, Chuck Moon and George Freidenberger. 

At a program held in the Malad High School Auditorium, Miss Diane Crowther, a senior was named Oneida County Bicentennial Queen. Diane was chosen from an accomplished group of five finalists, Becky Crowther, Shannon Smith, Delaine Illum and Wendy Thomas, who were judged on their talent, poise and personality, and an essay on the “Pioneer Spirit in America’s Greatness.”

Plans for a major remodeling of the Evans Co-op Department Store were announced this week by the firm’s management. Extensive changes to both the interior and exterior of the big building will be made, according to Don Evans, president and general manager of the Co-op, Idaho’s oldest department store and also one of the State’s oldest corporations. 

60 YEARS AGO (1966)

Enlisting in the U.S. Air Force for four years, Ralph Hanson will leave Thursday for Amarillo, Texas to begin basic training.

Probably seeing the longest continuous length of service of any employee in Oneida County with the same firm, Thomas A. Evans marked his 47th year with the Evans Co-op Hardware, Monday, April 4.

“They took my children and cared for them while I was in the hospital with rheumatic fever,” Mrs. Rex Waldron said in her nomination of Mr. and Mr. M. Joe Davis for “People Who Make Oneida”. “They were such very good neighbors to me and my family after I got home, too.” Mr. and Mrs. Davis, both of whom teach at Malad High School, have two children of their own, a daughter, Jacqueline, age 13, and a son, Melvin Jeffery, six. Mr. Davis teaches political science and Mrs. Davis is head of the home economics department. Both are active in the LDS Church. Mr. Davis spends his leisure hours hunting or reading historical novels; Mrs. Davis enjoys sewing and currently devotes much time to Future Homemakers of America, a club for girls enrolled in home economics. She has also worked with 4-H clubs.

Farm Bureau Insurance of Oneida County this week announced the appointment of Foster Ipsen as special agent for this county. Mr. Ipsen replaces the late George Mansfield.

70 YEARS AGO (1956)

Ties for valedictorian and also salutatorian of the Malad Junior High School graduating class was announced this week by Principal George Bush. Top honors went to Gordon Lewis and Marilee Dredge. Both pupils completed their junior high work with a grade point average of 3.96 of a possible four. Co-salutatorians with averages of 3.91 are Stephanie Allen and Judith Hughes.

Lawrence R. Budge, Jr., airman apprentice, USN is serving with the Air Transport Squadron 21, based at the Barber’s Point Naval Air Station, Oahu, T.H.I. Budge has been assigned to the air traffic department. Before entering the Navy in November 1955, Budge attended Utah State Agricultural College.

The Fourth Ward Gold and Green Ball was held March 24. The hall was decorated in traditional gold and green with umbrellas carrying out the theme, “April Showers”. There were four debutantes honored in the evening Sonja Smith, Sharon Evans, Fay Sweeten, and Deanna Kay Price. Miss Della Beth McAllister, accompanied by Mrs. Mabel Dyreng, sang the theme song.

80 YEARS AGO (1946)

T-Sgt. Lavern Colton has been transferred from Nagoya to Yokahama, Japan, according to word received by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Colton. 

Captain Mabel Scott has been transferred from Fort Worth, Texas, to Savannah, Georgia, where she will have charge of the U.S. Public Health Hospital, as senior nurse officer.

Fort Douglas Utah – Pvt. Lon W. Corbridge, son of Mr. and Mrs. L.G. Corbrigde, Malad, Idaho, has been discharged from the army at the Fort Douglas Separation Center. Pvt. Corbridge, who served 10 months in the States as a radio operator is authorized to wear the Victory ribbon. He was inducted into the army May 31, 1945.

With drill core operations nearly completed on Sandy Ridge dam site on Little Malad River, Bureau of Reclamation workers are preparing to move upstream for test on rock foundation of the Daniels dam site, according to E. O. Larson, region 4 director. Both dam sites are being investigated by bureau engineers as features of the $3,000,000 (based on 1940 prices) Malad Valley project, proposed to provide new irrigation water to about 2,000 land-acres and supplemental water to some 13,000 acres in North Malad Valley.

Under the auspices of the Malad Posse the second annual Horse Show Barn Dance will be held, April 10th at the LeGrande Hall.  At the dance, the Malad Valley Dust Cutters will play and Farrell and Clem Williams, the local sagebrush crooners, will be the featured vocalists. 

Dean Briggs sent word to his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Q. Briggs, that he has been appointed commissary officer for the NROTC located at Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Dean holds the rank of Cadet Ensign and is one of the four cadet officers of the NROTC battalion staff. Dean is in the last wartime NROTC class and is scheduled to receive his commission in the United States Naval reserve this June. 

Tommie Lewis, son of Mr. and Mrs. T. J. Lewis has recently been made a corporal. He is stationed in Munich, Germany.
