Saints and friends of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints gather in person and virtually around the world to partake in the messages, devotionals, and testimonies shared by the general leadership of the church April 4-5.  Over the four sessions held Saturday and Sunday, numerous speakers shared messages about Jesus Christ, a befitting central theme for the Easter weekend.

The opening session held Saturday morning, the worldwide Latter-day Saint congregation formally sustained Church President Dallin H Oaks as the current prophet, seer, and revelator, as well as his counselors Henry B Eyring and D Todd Christofferson during the Solemn Assembly.  New Quorum of the Twelve Apostles Elder Gérald Caussé and Elder Clark G Gilbert were sustained, along with a new Primary Presidency Rosemary K Chibota, Nina M Garfield, and Theresa A Collins.

Apostle Elder Patrick Kearon opened the session with an experience that taught him how church callings are both an offering to God and a blessing from Him.  He shared how the Lord works with imperfect servants, and some callings require stretching.  “Callings from the Lord are tailor-made for our growth,” he said. ‘As we humble ourselves, look outward, and learn that, indeed, when we are in the service of our fellow beings, we are in fact in the service of our God.”

Recalling other experiences that have required ‘enduring to the end,’ Elder David A Bednar said, “Enduring to the end is the joyous quest of a lifetime.  As our love for Him grows ever stronger and deeper, we can be blessed to receive spiritual perspective, the Lord’s empowering grace, and exceedingly great and indescribable joy.” 

Other speakers of the session included the newest apostle to the Quorum, Elder Clark G Gilbert, Sister Kristin M. Yee of the General Relief Society Presidency, and Elder Michael John U Teh and Elder Jorge T Becerra of the Seventy.

The Saturday afternoon Elder Gary E Stevenson invited listeners to provide Christlike love and service, offer help and comfort, prayerfully seek the Spirit’s guidance, and help prepare families to make and keep sacred covenants. “We are all one family,” he said. “We all need help along the way.”  In today’s “perilous times,” the rising generation needs a defense and refuge from the storm.

Elder Ulisses Soares taught, “Abiding in Christ is not an occasional or casual act; it is a constant, conscious, and sacred choice,” he said. “Abiding in Christ does not remove the burdens of life, but through His grace they are made lighter, and our hearts are strengthened by the comfort and peace He promises.”

Speaking of the infinite worth each soul carries, Elder Gérald Caussé spoke, “Though we may seem small in a physical sense, each of us is personally known, remembered, and loved by our Eternal Father and by His Son Jesus Christ.”  He invited listeners to remember this in every interaction they have, saying, “Our eyes are opened to their divine potential. We begin to see them as the Lord sees them.” 

Elder Eduardo F. Ortega, Elder Wan-Liang Wu, Elder Brian J. Holmes, Elder Clement M. Matswagothata of the Seventy shared messages of how “Becoming a lifelong disciple of Christ is a process, the sum of multiple small daily personal and spiritual events,” “There is an intrinsic relationship between faith and works,” “The Savior taught that He is not only our guide, He is the path,” and “The question should never be ‘Will the Savior walk with me?’ He will.  The real question is, ‘Will I walk with Him?”

Brother David J. Wunderli, First Counselor in the Young Men General Presidency, taught, “Jesus Christ is not the weight, He is our relief.”

Continuing Easter Sunday morning, President Dieter F. Uchtdorf, Acting President of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, opened the session with a message of Christ’s Resurrection and encouraged listeners to share their witness with others. “If you want to feel grounded, gain a sense of divine belonging, and make a real difference in the world, I invite you to follow the Savior and minister in His name.”

“Resurrection is at the core of the doctrine of the Church,” taught Elder Ronald A Rasband.  “May we testify of Him by the way we live and what we love. May we feel to our very souls these stirring words: “He is risen!”

Adding his own witness of the Easter message, Elder Dale G Renlund invited, “Celebrate the joyous message of Easter every day by reflecting every day on the blessings you receive because of Him. ‘Open wide your broken heart and let your Savior in!’”

Speaking of the “best days” and “worst days,” Young Women General President Emily Belle Freeman said, “Jesus Christ is our strength.  Because of Him, no matter how bad things are right now, your best days are ahead.”

Sacrament meeting is the most important meeting in the Church because of the ordinance of the sacrament, which represents the Lord’s Atonement, said Elder Pedro X. Larreal of the Seventy.  During the sacrament, he encouraged Latter-day Saints to strive to remove worldly thoughts, be prayerful and reverent, and seek to feel His love and remember Him.

Elder Edward B. Rowe, Elder Thierry K. Mutombo, and Elder Alan R. Walker of the Seventy continued to teach of Jesus Christ with their messages, “Jesus Christ is thus not only a perfect and personal guide — He is also the resurrected Redeemer and Master Healer,” “‘Come unto me’ is a divine invitation which means wherever you are now, whatever you are going through in your life, you can feel God’s infinite love, and “The Lord does not ask for perfection all at once, rather, He asks for honest and broken hearts, humble spirits, and a willing readiness to keep our covenants.”

President Oaks concluded the meeting with a message resolution and reconciliation.  He said, “Peacemakers! How it would change the world if followers of Christ would forgo harsh and hurtful words in all their communications.”

The final session of the conference began with President D. Todd Christofferson, Second Counselor in the First Presidency, who testified of the loving character of Jesus Christ and how we can become more like Him.  “With faith in Christ, we can pray that the Holy Spirit will effect a mighty change in us to instill these same divine motivations in our heart and help us practice the attributes of a Christlike character.”

“Our emphasis at Easter encompasses the eternity-shaping events that occurred in the Garden of Gethsemane, on the cross at Calvary, and in the Garden Tomb where Jesus Christ was resurrected,” taught Elder Quentin L. Cook

“When we have a question, problem, or joy, Jesus Christ says, ‘I am your answer, your way, your truth, your life’,” taught Elder Gerrit W. Gong. 

Elder Neil L. Andersen of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles focused his address on marriage.  “Within our sacred marriage, bound to God and to each other, we find ourselves in a crucible of spiritual development where the vital qualities of sacrifice, charity, patience, and being a peacemaker — the very character of Christ — can become a greater part of us.”

President Oaks once again closed with a final message for the conference with the following invitation and promise: “As we treasure up and act upon the teachings of this conference, the Lord will continue to teach and inspire us with personal revelation and guidance. I promise this to each of us as we follow the directions of the servants of the Lord and look to God and live.”
