10 YEARS AGO (2016) Grandparents' Day was enjoyed by Trevor Johnston, Tate Johnston, Grandma Dixie Hubbard, Tyce Johnston, Grandpa Don Hubbard and granddaughter Aly Wright.
Malad children ages 0 – 12 has a lot of fun last Saturday, despite the chilly weather, at the annual Easter Egg Hunt at Malad City Park, The Easter Egg Hunt is sponsored by the Malad Area Chamber of Commerce every year. This year they received help from Malad High School students who helped paint lines for the age divisions and acted as Easter bunnies, placing eggs around the park area for all the kids.
The Sixth Annual Woman in Agriculture luncheon, sponsored by Malad Farm Service Agency (FSA), was held on Tuesday, March 22. Keynote speaker was Lisa Davis, the wife of the late Jeff Davis.
It was a happy day at Malad Elementary on Thursday, March 24! It was the annual Grandparents’ Day and many grandparents filled the school halls, classrooms and it was standing room only for the first and second Grade program in the auditorium, “Goldi Rocks and the Three Bears”.
On Tuesday, March 22, the Stone Elementary students invited their grandparents and parents to visit their school. The students sang patriotic songs and helped everyone learn what each part of the Pledge of Allegiance meant. They sang “You’re a Grand Old Flag”, “Stars and Stripes Forever” and “There are Many Flags in Many Lands”.
Malad High School’s Business Professionals of America (BPA) students competed at the Idaho State BPA Competitions Thursday, March 10 – Saturday March 12, in Boise at Boise State University.
Those students who attended were Rachel Green, Krista Rowley, Ashlyn Price, Josh Stayner, Trevan Downey, Eric Reiss, Nathan Lenaghen and Keegan Peterson.
15 YEARS AGO (2011)
‘Do a job you love and you’ll never work a day in your life,’ say the Roderick’s, Dale and Betty. When the Roderick’s took over the city flowerbeds, they were almost starting from scratch. “There is an art to planting flowers and shrubs,” states Betty. Dale’s take on it is, “she’s the brains and I’m the brawn!” Betty enjoys planting, weeding and deadheading. Dale does the heavy stuff – the shovel work. Whatever the philosophy, it works and the flowerbeds are enjoyed by all – the locals and the visitors who come to downtown Malad City. Dale and Betty are quick to pass the credit on though, as Betty states, “The only master is Mother Nature!”
Schmei! (Hi!) The 7th annual Malad Valley Welsh Festival is scheduled for July 1-2, with a special Welsh Family history day kicking things off on Thursday, June 30. Although the schedule is not definite yet, several events are already planned.
Major Derek F. Ipsen, son of Kathy Ipsen and the late Foster Ipsen, has completed a fellowship in hand surgery at The Curtis National Hand Center, Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, and Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C.
Irene Alder was one of the first two nominees inducted into the Idaho Coaches of Dance and Cheer Hall of Fame. The award was presented at the group’s State Competitions, held March 19, at the Idaho Center in Nampa.
20 YEARS AGO (2006)
Malad’s new doctor is in town for a couple of weeks doing some training in connection with his residency. Robert D. Hodson, D.O., has confirmed his intention to come here but won’t actually be setting up his practice until July. While here, however, he is getting better acquainted with the community.
Kyle Tackett was recently selected as District Conservationist for the United States Department of Agriculture-Natural Resources Conservation Service, Malad Field Office.
Malad High School’s Special Topics Science Class competed at ISU Engineering Day, winning some awards. Members of the class include Ashlee Wakley, Luke Beck, Cale Morrison, Tayja Grote, Trevon Tapp, Ammon Treasure, Jenna Kent, Emily Treasure and Katie Gilgen.
The Malad High School Junior Prom, “A Red Carpet Affair,” was held at Malad High School on Friday, March 24. A red carpet ran from the entrance, passing the paparazzi and stars lined along the wall, and through the commons where the tables were facing toward a fountain in the center of the stage. The gym was transformed by black, red and silver decoration. The music for the night was provided by A & B Productions.
Malad Elementary Principal Robert Hannah reported that the Scott-Foresman Math Program has been selected for use at the school next year. The program will also be used at the Stone School and with the Middle School 5th grade. In delivering his report, Hannah noted that the teachers had been meeting as a faculty in order to prepare for this adoption.
30 YEARS AGO (1996)
An unexpected guest recently took up residence in an abandoned house north of Daniels reservoir. The guest was a yearling female mountain lion. Local ranchers Neil Holt and Don Buehler found evidence that the lion was in the area. With the help of Animal Damage Control Officer from Rockland, Dean Carpenter, his wife Geri and Idaho Fish & Game Officer Chris Bocek, they were able to tranquilize the animal and it was transported about fifty miles to an area where the Idaho Fish & Game is conducting a lion research project in.
Elizabeth Crowther was notified recently that she has been selected to represent Malad High School as the 1996 Hugh O’Brien Youth Foundation (HOBY) Leadership Seminar participant.
The new officers for the American Legion Post #65 are Commander, Dale L. Reese; Vice Commander, Frank Stocks; Vice Commander, Dan Sheridan, Adjutant; Gene Caldwell; Sergeant-at-Arms; Dale Thomas; Service Officer, Reed Facer; Judge Advocate, John D. Tovey; Chaplain, Carl Isaacson; and Historian, Jess P. Ward. The new officers were sworn in by the Department of Idaho Representative Robert Potts, State Finance Commission.
Tara M. Williams, of Malad, has been selected as the top vocational student in Idaho in the All-American Vocational Student Awards, a national vocational education awards program sponsored annually by SERVISTAR and Coast-to-Coast Stores, Inc.
40 YEARS AGO (1986)
Under the sponsorship of Ernest W. Jones Post No. 65, five delegates and three alternates will attend the 1986 session of American Legion Boys State, Post Commander Reed Facer announced today. Steve Gunnell, John H. Williams, Clinton Rohner, Chris Parry and Bracken Budge will attend the program scheduled on the campus of Boise State University. They will be part of some 30,000 high school juniors, nationwide who will participate in this year’s event. In addition Brett Horsley, Jerry Thomas and Ray Davis were named as alternates.

Florence Ipsen Bowman will be presented in a guest recital at Utah State University, April 3, in the Fine Arts Building. A soprano, she will perform the song cycle, “Frauenliebe and leben (Woman’s Life and Love) by Schumann and songs by Purcell. The cycle she will perform is one of the loveliest written for the voice. It creates in song the emotions in a woman’s life from the awakening of first love, through the courtship, the engagement, the wedding, the birth of a child and finally the sudden death of her husband.
50 YEARS AGO (1976)
One of Malad’s favorite shows is coming here April 17, starring six local beauties, lots of talent and personality plus. The Miss Malad City Pageant sponsored here since 1950 by the Malad Lions Club, always opens to a packed house and highly appreciative audience. Participating this year are six high school seniors, Kathleen Colton, Diane Crowther, Patty Illum, Ann Jones, Wendy Sweeten and Karla Wakley.
Richard D. Thomas is in Washington, DC, this week attending the annual National Explorer Presidents Congress. Richard is vice chairman of the Area II (Idaho and Utah) Explorer Presidents’ Association and is also chairman of the Tendoy Council EPA.
Five Malad High speech students participated in the State Declamation at Bonneville High School in Idaho Falls on March 26. Receiving superior ratings were Julie Jensen, Delaine Illum and Wendy Thomas. Derrad Pearce and Leslie Willie received excellent ratings. Competition was keen with 55 schools participating.
Pictured in The Idaho Enterprise receiving congratulations and a handshake from Malad High School Principal Jerry Esplin is Jeff Treasure, winner of the School’s art contest to design a dragon mascot. Jeff will paint a mural, to be placed in the High School, of an orange and brown traditional-styled dragon. Jeff is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Treasure. Second place winner is Laurie Ward daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer V. Ward and winning third place is Steve Treasure, younger brother to Jeff.
60 YEARS AGO (1966)
Malad Schools will be opened during off-hours to assist junior and senor high school students and adults in study, research and library work beginning Tuesday, April 5th, and continuing on each succeeding Tuesday and Thursday at 7 p.m. The program is being sponsored by the federal government with the primary purpose being to make available to under-privileged such educational opportunities as may help them in every day living.
Barry Williams, student at Utah State University, Logan, was one of the range management department students to be named to the Dean’s list for scholastic achievement during fall and winter quarters. He will graduated from the School of Forestry in June. Barry is the son of Mr. and Mrs. D.T. (Sod) Williams, Arbon.
Remodeling of the Oneida County jail is nearing completion. The jail has been completely repaired: beds have been replaced with new single beds, mattresses and mattress covers. Stationery steel benches have replaced the old wooden chairs. Minor repairs remain to be done on some windows and some painting must be done in the jail to finish the renovation.
Having the theme song “When I Fall In Love”, the Junior Prom is readied for April 1 at 8:30 p.m. in the Malad High School Gym. The music will be provided by the Keith Jensen Orchestra. Don Bowen will sing the theme song. Students in charge of the various committees are Camille Jones, prom chairman; Shaleen Price, promenade; DayOnna Bowen, music; Virginia Morgan, refreshments.
70 YEARS AGO (1956)
With a grade point average of 3.95 of a possible four, Miss Deanna Kay Price, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Kleal Price has been named Malad High School valedictorian for 1956. Salutatorian is Miss Janice Thomas, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry E. Thomas, who has a 3.88 grade point average. Other top scholastic students in the graduating class are Sue Jones, Barbara Parry, Kathryn Jones and Sally Kent.
Ladell Andersen, great guard for Denver’s Central Bankers, possible owes his life to the fact that his team was defeated in the National AAU Basketball tournament. Andersen, former Utah State basketball player, suffered a “heart spasm” either on Thursday or Friday and entered Rocky Mountain Orthopedic Hospital. He was still awaiting the results of cardiogram tests on Monday. Andersen was sent to the hospital when a test showed the heart blockage. Andersen had scored 20 points in the Bankers’ loss and was an outstanding player in the game.
80 YEARS AGO (1946)
Miss Gloria Rees, daughter of Mrs. Nellie Rees and the late Philip M. Rees, and Ralph Gleed, son of Mr. and Mrs. Wilford Gleed were united in marriage, on March 21, in the L.D.S. Temple at Idaho Falls. President Smith performed the ceremony.
