Dragons run hard at home

Hosting their first of multiple home meets, the MHS track and field team competed in Malad on Thursday, March 26. The cool and windy afternoon saw great accomplishments for the team, including the second place finish by the Lady Dragon women’s team.
Competing against schools from Bear Lake, Marsh Valley, North Fremont, North Gem, Ririe, Rockland, Shake River, Star Valley, West Jefferson, and West Side, the Malad team was challenged in the best way to push them for greater results. Star Valley topped the charts for both mens and womens team scores with Malad coming in second for the women's and sixth in the men's.
To aid the Lady Dragons in their second place team finish were four event winning performances by Halie Palmer in the 400M, Kaycee Venable in the 300M hurdles, Izzy Haycock in the javelin, and team win in the medley relay by Annika Wright, Karlee Williams, Brielle Bastian, and Palmer.
The MHS coaching staff shared, “We have a lot of fast runners in our relays and despite some rough handoffs and even a dropped baton, the girls still managed to win. Once we can get handoffs honed in, our girls and boys will have a lot of success in our relays.”
Continuing to speak of the accomplishments of the team, they shared, “It was pretty awesome to have three girls in the top five in the javelin.”
It wasn’t just the first place wins that tallied up the points for Malad but also the numerous top 10 finishing places by Brielle Bastian and Annika Wright in the 100M, Palmer, Bastian, and Howe in the 200M, Aezlyn Summers in the 800M, 1600M, and 3200M, Venable in the 100M hurdles and the pole vault, and Jette Nelson in the triple jump.
Even with some of the top performers out for the meet, the MHS boys team had a strong performance as well. The coaches commented, “Some standout performances included Jeremiah “JP” Peterson and Levi Angell the 400M. Peterson also had a PR in the open one. Leif Allen and Rhône Gleckler both threw over 100” to earn PRs in the disc and Matt Brisco got third in the triple with a big PR. Justin Toone matched his personal best from the state meet last year to earn second place in the high jump.”
“Our distance crew did great,” they continued. “The distance boys ran faster than that last week, as well as Summers and Ellie Angell. And that’s the point in distance. We don’t want them to have a PR every week. We want them to peak the week of district and state so every week when they get an SR or faster than the last week that’s what we want. They work hard and trust the process and they just get faster each week.”
The exciting success of the first meets have been a motivating push for the MHS athletes both as a team as individuals. With more opportunities for success on the horizon, the team and coaches look forward to the upcoming weeks of the season. They will next compete on April 3 at the Preston Invitational meet before returning for the JV meet on April 8.
