(Written a few years back, when Louise was alive and well.)
I was over to Louise’s the other day, and we got on the subject of Gerald Yearsley. Mr. Yearsley was blind and was the custodian of the Second Ward building for years. That building was well maintained, and I think everyone in the valley admired him for what he could do.
When he was ready to retire, he took Dean Williams, who was going to take the job, into one of the storage/maintenance areas and was explaining some things he had to do. Dean later told Louise what happened:
“You’ve got to keep an eye on these pressures and always make sure these switches are flipped,” Mr. Yearsley explained. He went on to show Dean where he kept tools and supplies.
Finally, Dean asked, “My only question is, can I turn on the lights to do it?”
Now, there is a lot to learn from that simple question. Gerald Yearsley was blind, but he lived with the lights fully illuminated. His was a life of service, not one of limitation. Look around and be grateful for the bright lights in your Good Life! You might have to flip a switch or two to get the full effect.
