Looking Back
5 YEARS AGO (2021)
Malad Boy Scout Troop 1776 met Sunday, March 14 at the American Legion Post Building for a troop meeting and Cout of Honor. The troop is working with over 40 young men and has an exciting year planned for learning skills, attending camps, developing leadership, and providing service. Many of the young men were awarded merit badges they had earned and rank advancements.
Ryan Adams, son of Diane and Doug Adams, received special recognition as the 2020 Outstanding Junior Assistant Scoutmaster for his work teaching and mentoring the younger Scouts. The troop committee would like to thank all the parents and the community for its continued support.
The Malad Middle School’s MathCounts team had three students qualify for the Chapter Invitational competition this year, which will be held in March.
This year, the MathCounts competitions are being held virtually. There were only two rounds/competition (Sprint and Target) instead of the usual four, eliminating the team and countdown rounds.
Malad had 13 students compete in the Southeast Idaho Chapter. Those competing were Alivia Waldron, Aubrey Corbett, Cam Bingham, Drake Morrison, Emree Hanks, Hope Briggs, Jens Huckaby, Joe Kimberling, Joe Willie, Josh Pickett, Kailey Pickett, Madelyn Shaw and Rhone Gleckler. The Malad High School boys’ basketball team had two players named to the 2A Fifth District All-Conference team. The team is selected by the coaches in the 2A Fifth District.
Tom Simpson was named to the First Team and Traven Ward was named to the Second Team.
10 YEARS AGO (2016)
The Oneida County Fair Board reorganized for the year. The terms of both Chairman Leigh Love and Brad Warren expired. The new chairman is Darin Daniels, with Patrick Werk as vice chairman. New members Donna Potter and Tod Thomas join members Jared Brown, Allison Eliason and Justin Edwards on the board, with Diane Skidmore as secretary.
Wendell and Pamila Smith celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary. Wendell and Pam were married March 18, 1966 in the Logan, Utah LDS Temple.
The Malad High School Physics class earned top prizes in several categories at a recent STEM competition at ISU. Those attending were Dallin Ward, Trevan Downey, Triston Walton, Joe Thomas, Hayden Peterson and Luke Steffenhagen.
The Malad High School boys’ basketball team had three players selected for the 2A Fifth District Boys’ Basketball All-Conference honor.
MHS basketball players chosen for All Conference honors are Ammon Bingham and Daegon Haycock, honorable mention and Hayden Green, named to the All Conference Second Team.

CMSgt David L. Colton is retiring after 38 years of military service with the Utah Air National Guard. Chief Colton grew up in Malad, and graduated from Malad High School in 1968 and attended Weber State College. CMSgt Colton is the son of LaVern and Joyce Colton. He has three children, Brian, Monica and Erica. He continues to live in Malad and farm on the Malad Summit.

Registered nurses at the Oneida County Hospital, Vicky Kent and Brenda Barney, and Nancy Asay, Acute Care Director, are now trained and prepared under the direction of Dr. Michael Francisco, M.D., Medical Oncologist and Hematologist, to provide oncology services at the Oneida County Hospital.

20 YEARS AGO (2006)
Duston Cheney, Pocatello has joined the Oneida County Sheriff’s Department as a patrol deputy.
The Hess Pumice Cultured Stone Plant in the Malad Industrial Park now makes 90 percent of all the cultured stone accessory products Owens-Corning has available to the market. This week, the plant is adding the other 10 percent. Matt Tubbs, plant manager, says that with addition of this last phase, Malad is now making 54 separate product items for Owens-Corning.
Receiving awards at the annual Malad District Scout Recognition Banquet were: 25-year Veteran award, Gloria Tubbs; District Award of Merit, Diane Hogan and James Mustos; “Salute a Community Organization” award, Malad Lions Club represented by Club President Rex Robbins and “Salute a Hero” award, Bryan Scott. Also during the evening eleven Scouts who received Eagle Awards during 2005 were recognized for their leadership and example. They were Steven Atkinson, David Baker, Tyler Baker, Patrick Bennett, David Boel, Robert Hannah, Benjamin Ray, Brady Robbins, Christopher Semrad, Zachary Smith and Matthew Thomas.
Both teams that competed at the FCCLA STAR events qualified for state. Those competing were Erin Morley, Christina Peterson, Jessica Salter, Shantel Tavoian and Kelli Stokes.
All of the competitors in the FFA speech competitions placed at a recent competition at West Side. Those placing included Ashlee Wakley, Shane Price, Jentry Friedli, Justin Firth, Ryan Hannah and Ty Price.
30 YEARS AGO (1996)
With the end of the school year now just a little more than two months off, Malad High School announced its valedictorian and salutatorian for the Class of 1996 this week. Joslyn Keller is this year’s top student, while Rochelle Panting is second in line. The two graduating seniors will represent their classmates in speaking at MHS Commencement exercises slated for May 22, in the high school gymnasium.
Dee Atkinson graduated with honors with a BS in Ag Business from Utah State. He is now employed by FMC Corporation in Walla Walla, Washington.
Nine-year-old Trevor Ward was a first place winner in the Preston Elks Hoop Shoot held at Malad High School.
Malad Dragons placed five wrestlers in the A-3 Division finals at the State Wrestling tournament held at the Holt Arena in Pocatello. Senior John Blaisdell became the State champ in the 119 weight division. Junior heavyweight Tim Moon was a runner-up in second place. Jared Robbins placed third, and Layne Richins placed fifth. Senior Riley Jones finished in sixth place, and sophomore Eric Buehler did not make it into the championship round but finished in 7th place.
Justin E. Mills and Troy A. Anderson have enlisted in the Btry A 1-148 FA BN, Idaho Army National Guard. Pvt. Mills will be trained as a cannon crewmember and plans to attend college using the National Guard’s G.I. Bill, Tuition Assistance and Student Load Repayment Programs. Both Mills and Anderson are currently juniors at Malad High School and will complete basic training this summer. They will complete Advance Individual training shortly after graduating from high school.

Jared Cowlishaw and LaRee Jensen, who both received superior ratings at the Fifth District Speech Tournament held last week in Pocatello. They will now go on to represent the Fifth District and Malad High School in state competition.
An agreement between Idaho State University and Utah State University will permit 25 students from each state to attend the out-of-state school without having to pay the substantially higher non-resident fees. The reciprocity agreement will enable the students selected for the program, scheduled to commence May 1 of this year, to attend the out-of-state school by paying resident fee charges.
Traditionally, cake baking and decorating is considered girl’s stuff, but some of the guys at Malad High School stepped across the gender line to participate in the “Cake King” contest sponsored annually by the Future Homemakers of America. First place honors went to David Jensen, who represented the FFA. FHA representative, Marc Pett, came in second, and Travis Palmer, working for the Drill Team, placed third.
A-3 Fifth District Champions, Malad High School, dominated the A-3 Southeastern Idaho all-conference team, which was released last week. In addition to placing three players on the team, the Dragons also provided the “Player Of The Year” in Kevin Archibald, and the “Coach Of The Year” is Terry Jones. First Team players were Steve Gunnell, Bracken Budge and Erik Knutsen. Second Team selections included Rod Sweeten. Honorable mention went to Troy Hubbard.
50 YEARS AGO (1976)
Bicentennial preparations are getting into gear in Oneida County, with the “Idaho Days” Queen Contest leading off some of the many scheduled events. Five Malad High schoolers have been selected to represent the County in the “Idaho Days” celebrations - Diane Crowther, Becky Crowther, Delaine Illum, Shannon Smith and Wendy Thomas. An April 2 date has been set to choose the Oneida Bicentennial Queen from these five semifinalists, and the public is invited to attend the competition at the high school auditorium.
Members of the Oneida County Homemakers Council and other volunteers have spent the past two weeks gathering signatures on petitions, which seek to bring an Idaho television station to the Valley. Four petitions have been turned into Extension Home Economist Maurine Bingham’s office with results so far favorable to establishing a translator district here – the first step towards bringing Idaho Falls Channel 3 KID station here.
FFA Sweetheart finalists are Sherry Blaisdell, Danece Daniels and Mary Richards. The Sweetheart will be named at the annual banquet in April. The three finalists and their mothers are invited to attend the State Convention in Twin Falls as Chapter guests.
Malad High School’s John Servoss will be one of 24 players competing in the second annual Fifth District All-Star Basketball game to be played in ISU’s Reed Gym on March 18.
