Dragons hit the mats across Idaho
Jan 22, 2026 09:04AM ● By Allison EliasonThe Dragon wrestling team started out the new year with some exciting team and individual wins, hitting the mats the opening weekend of January. With so many tournaments to compete in, the wrestlers of the Malad team went various ways, covering near all of Idaho.
Saturday, January 3, showcased MHS wrestling in Bear Lake at the Traeden McPherson Memorial tournament. The business trip was nothing short of successful for the Malad wrestlers as both the boys and girls teams finished the tournament in first place. And not by a small margin. The boys scored 233.5 points in first place with Ririe coming in second at 153, trailing by 80.5 points. The Lady Dragons won their tournament with 128.5 points, 75 points ahead of Bear Lake with 53.5.
The boys tournament consisted of 13 total teams while the girls tournament had 7. At the end of the competition, Malad had 16 male individual placers with 4 champions as well as 10 female placers with an impressive 7 champions.

Malad also had two wrestlers competing over the weekend at the Rollie Lanes in Nampa. With 92 teams from 6 states and over 1500 wrestlers, Rollie Lanes is the largest tournament in Idaho and quickly becoming one of the toughest on the west coast.
Oakley Maddox and Drake Morrison represented the Malad Dragons as the first to wrestle in the tournament. Maddox competed in the 175lb bracket, coming up short in the quarterfinal match against Middleton wrestler Ryan Lewis. Morrison competed in the 157lb bracket, ending the tournament as Malad’s first Rollie Lanes champion as he went undefeated in his six matches of the tournament.
January will be a packed month of wrestling for Dragons as they prepare themselves for the district and state tournaments. The varsity’s next matches will be at the Richardson Memorial tournament hosted by Box Elder High School beginning Friday, January 9.
