Grandparents Only

We spent a few years in Georgia in the early 2000s. It was a time of change and growth for us. At Christmas there was no snow and no elementary Christmas Program. It was a little unsettling, but we were getting through it.

For several years prior friend Helen Ward had taught the children “The Angels Sang.” It was the finale of the elementary program with fourth and fifth grade joining together. For this song the kids honestly thought they were angels, and for those few minutes every one of them were. The old auditorium was filled with people and music and somehow Christmas for me was dependent on that glorious combination…music and kids and that song.

Part of the lyrics were: “And the angles sang with the angel band and the stars shone down from above and the message was to all the world, Christmas is a time of love.” I found myself humming and singing those words throughout December and they always brought a warmth. I’d imagine slipping into the auditorium during their rehearsals and quietly sitting in the back and being filled with the magic of the season. There were perks to working at the elementary school and now I was missing them!

One particularly overwhelming day close to Christmas a package came in the mail from Malad Elementary. It was a CD. I had to listen in the car because that was the only CD player we had. There were short messages from friends and then at the end was a recording of the kids singing “The Angels Sang.”

Life is Good when you can sit in the car, cry and be filled with Christmas warmth that carries all the way across the country. “…and the message was to all the world, Christmas is a time of love.” Merry Christmas to you all!
