10 YEARS AGO (2015)

 

Lynn Price was voted by his fellow firemen as the 2015 Fireman of the Year at the annual Firemen’s Banquet, which is traditionally held prior to the Fireman’s Ball.

Firemen vote on the person in the department that has gone the extra mile during the year for the benefit of the department. A member of the Malad Volunteer fire Department for 27 years, Lynn was described as a “workhouse” for the department by last year’s winner Doug Crowther who presented the award. Crowther further commented that Price is an active part of the Malad community, having served for many years in the Chamber of Commerce and as an active member of the Search and Rescue. As a business owner, Lynn provides jobs for high school kids and others in the community.

15 YEARS AGO (2010)

  Rob Hess was named 2010 Fireman of the Year during the Malad Volunteer Firemen’s annual banquet held December 11, prior to the annual Firemen’s Ball. Last Year’s recipient Jerry Thomas presented the award. Members of the Malad Fire Department are Ceylon Reeder, Ray Davis, Todd Jones, Robby Hess, Brady Hess, Doug Crowther, Lynn Price, Wes Nieffenegger, Gary Shepherd, Brad Hess, Ed Jones, Jerry Thomas, Dan Williams, Chris Jensen and Geoff Green.

On December 31, 2010, Karen Wharton will spend her last day working at her job as Lead Court Clerk in Oneida County that has spanned 33 years. When asked what life lesson she will take away with her from her job, Wharton said that if she has learned anything during her 33 years of working in the justice system, it would be the need for compassion and respect.

Diane Skidmore is the candidate chosen to pass the torch to and Wharton has great confidence in her ability to do the job well.

Malad High School was among seven lucky area schools to get an early holiday present from KJ’s Super Stores and the Idaho Lottery.

David Workman, spokesman for the Idaho Lottery, and Geoff Green, representing Conrad and Bischoff, owners of KJ’s Super Stores, presented a check for $300 to Malad High School Principal John Crockett and Media Specialist Jill Daniels, Jill was a participant in the Idaho Lottery’s recent “Scratch for Schools” event, which was a precursor to this award.

20 YEARS AGO (2005)

Joe and Euarda Neal Daniels will celebrate their 50th Wedding Anniversary on December 16, 2005. They were married in the Logan, Utah Temple in 1955.

Tyler Sherwood Baker, 18, son of Dan and Vikie Baker, has recently completed all requirements and received his Eagle Scout Award. Tyler’s project included the enclosure around the skate park next to the 2nd Ward LDS Church.

Eleven members of the Oneida Quilt Club are pictured in The Idaho Enterprise, cuddled up in the warm quilts they are donating to the Oneida Crisis Center. Eurada Daniels and Lois Lower accepted the quilts on behalf of the Crisis Center. Members of the Quilt Club are President Ione Latour, Norene Crowther, Ranae Larsen, Margaret Rees, Martha Maag, Judy Jones, Diana Marteeny, Barbara Jones, Lela Henderson, Joy Cornia and Jean Showell.

Seniors at Malad High School have an idea what they want to do after completing their education. There were 70 seniors at MHS who learned more about their possible future career choices through experience with a day of job shadowing.

The students were divided between Malad, Logan and Pocatello. They spent the day shadowing a person in their planned future career.

Some of the careers visited included Forest Service, physical therapy, elementary education, architect, cosmetology, nursing, auto mechanics, auto body technician, law enforcement, interior design and electronics.

25 YEARS AGO (2000)

Appearing before Sixth District Judge Randy Smith, Linda Elaine Schwartz entered a not guilty plea to the charge of first degree murder in the death of her ex-husband Bill Schwartz. 

This year, the Parade of Lights featured something new – a narrator. Dennis Evans with the help of his wife, Sherrie, narrated the parade in front of ET Kustom Sales, describing each float as it passed.

Most people driving along Highway 38 every Christmas season notice the home of Keith and Carolyn Atkinson. It is lit up for everyone to see. They are known for the work they put in to decorating their yard with lights and a variety of displays. But the spirit of Christmas does not end when you leave the Atkinson’s yard. It continues on inside the house as well. Walking into the Atkinson home is like walking in to a Christmas wonderland. Everywhere you look, there are Christmas displays. In fact, the Atkinson’s decorate almost every room in their house with Christmas decorations each year.

Malad High School’s Drama Team was able to take the largest group in several years to compete at the State Drama Competition held at Lake City High School in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. Those participating were the following: Kyle Gibson, Melissa Jeppsen, Trent Buehler, Mary Ann Jones, Shelli Ray, Christopher Atkinson, Jeff Stanley, Lucy Ward, Amber Christiansen, Tracee Roe, Angela Healy, Rich Higley, Chase Beecher and Dallas Thomas.

40 YEARS AGO (1985)

An ice skating rink at the Second Ward Park was a main topic of discussion at Malad City Council Meeting held, December 11. With the weather turning cold, city officials agreed that now is a good time to begin the project. Mayor Schwartz summed up the feeling of the Council, saying that; “This park has a lot of potential to provide a great deal of winter enjoyment for city residents. With the bowery there’s a place to build a fire and we can add a little to it each year.”

Sally Russell presented a check for $50 to Hospital Administrator Jim Russell and Dr. Stephen Johnson, to be placed in the Hospital Endowment Fund. Mrs. Russell raised this money with her Discovery Toy booth at the Festival of Trees.

The National Secondary Education Council announced today that Stephanie Cottle has been named an Academic All-American. She is the daughter of Steve and Fay Cottle.

Don B. Anderson and Michael V. Semrad, both of Malad, will be among the 84 persons to graduate from the Idaho State University Vo-Tech School on December 20. Both of these men will graduate in auto mechanics.

50 YEARS AGO (1975)

Through their respective lawyers, the Oneida County School Board and the Oneida Education Association have agreed on a choice of two fact finders – both from the office of State Superintendent of schools Roy Truby.

The cost of mailing letters within the U. S. will increase from 10 cents to 13 cents on December 28. Stamps for post cards will rise from 7 cents to 9 cents.

The Mirror Dance was held on Friday, December 12. Colen Sweeten and Kathleen Colton were honored as Mr. and Miss Mirror.

Mike Ward, son of Mr. and Mrs. Delton Ward, has received his mission call to Nashville, Tennessee and will enter the LDS mission home on the 17th of January.

The Malad Chapter of FFA along with other chapters in the area were hosted by the Marsh Valley Chapter for the annual FFA Co-op Contest. The Malad team took 4th place in this event, with team member Bob Sorensen scoring the highest number of points. Other team members were Ron Dell Skidmore and Keven Price.

60 YEARS AGO (1965)

A five-minute feature on the early history of Malad was shown on KSL-TV Sunday night. Pictures for the program were taken by Hank Dee of the Channel 5-news service and he was assisted in preparing the material by Mrs. Norma South.

H. Ronald Bjorkman, son of Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Bjorkman, has been named the Malad High School winner of the Bausch & Lomb Science Award.

Eight men inducted under the Selective Service system from Oneida County to date this year were Max John Isaacson, Nolan Allen Blaisdell, Farrel David Jones, Sheldon Williams, Joseph Don Thomas, Farrell Rex Christoffersen, Kenneth Smith and Thomas Carson Goddard.

The “Most Preferred” girl and boy for the year 1965-66 were named at the dance last Friday night. They were selected from a group of twelve finalists by the studentbody. Lonnie Gleed and Janice Blaisdell were chosen as the “Most Preferred” boy and girl for this year.

Miss Rhonda Lee Dorius was honored Monday on her sixth birthday by a party given by her mother, Mrs. Bob Dorius.

The St. John LDS Ward held its Gold and Green Ball Saturday night. Miss Karaleen Kay sang the theme song “Climb Every Mountain”. The floorshow was presented by the Mia Maids, Laurels and Explorers under the direction of Mr. and Mrs. LaVar Christoffersen.

Fifteen dollars in cash was taken and property damaged when the Malad High School was burglarized late Monday night or early Tuesday morning. Costliest damage was about $1,000 worth to a drink-dispensing machine owned by Coca-Cola Bottling. Approximately $240 damage was done to a filing cabinet, money box, key rack, locks and woodwork as the thief or thieves looked for money.

70 YEARS AGO (1955)

Pvt. Jesse Hughes, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Hughes, Malad, was awarded the silver wings of a parachutist in a graduation ceremony on completion of the rugged 11th Airborne Division Jump School at Fort Campbell, Kentucky.

Arrangements for the Miss Malad pageant are nearing completion.  To date there are 12 contestants. They are: Miss Ann Clark, Miss Joan Gleed, Miss Kenna Hughes, Miss Edna Mae Jones, Miss Kathryn Jones, Miss Sue Jones, Miss Joyce Mills, Miss Barbara Parry, Miss Deanna Price, Miss Shirley Swenson, Miss Janice Thomas, and Miss Marie Williams.

The Betty Crocker search for the American “Homemaker of Tomorrow” was held December 6. Miss Louise Carter, home economics teacher, conducted this test. Eleven senior girls are competing for the honor in Malad. They are: Kenna Hughes, Sue Jones, Neva Beeton, JoAnn Gleed, Kathryn Jones, Deon Daniels, Barbara Parry, Shirlee Swenson, Joyce Jones, Connie Moon and Margie Jones.

As low bidder on two-proposed projects in Idaho, Marion Hess, Malad contractor, has been awarded contracts for road construction by the Idaho Department of Highways. One, a half-million dollar project, calls for grading and oiling approximately six miles of roadway between Middleton and Star in Ada and Canyon counties. Second, contract awarded Mr. Hess is for crushing and oiling 18 miles of roadway between Lemhi and Leadore.

80 YEARS AGO (1945)

Final arrangements were completed this week with the Utah Power and Light Company for construction of the light and power line from Tremonton to Holbrook. Money for the reconstruction was collected from farmers interested in the project by the electricity committee headed by W. L. Baker, Oneida County Farm Bureau president in 1945; M. C. Grover, Oneida county agent, secretary, and Miss Norma Williams, treasurer.

  S-Sgt. Robert C. Bowen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Bowen and husband of Ruth Anderson, received his discharge from the service December 7, 1945, at Fort Douglas, Utah. He entered the service November 6, 1942, at Provo, Utah. He left September 5, 1944 for Europe he served in Ardennes, Central Europe and Rhineland. 



Fire causing $212,000 worth of damage completely destroyed the mill owned by the Oneida County Grain Growers, Inc. and the Husler Grain Elevator Monday afternoon. Also burned was property belonging to the Thorpe Brothers Coal Company.

Firemen work at the scene for more than 12 hours, and it was not until midnight Monday that the flames were reported fully extinguished.
