Students learn about the various things that firefighters do for the community.
October is a month that kids look forward to for obvious reasons, but in Malad many of those kids have reasons other than candy to be excited about. October is Nation al Fire Safety month, and in conjunction with classroom materials, the younger students at Malad elementary make a trek down to the volunteer Fire Station to learn a bit more about a lot of things. On their trip, students are given a tour of the building to see all the equipment and training that is involved in keeping the community safe from fire.
The Fire trucks and other heavy equipment are one of the highlights, of course, but students also get a chance to get up close and personal with some of the emergency tools and gear that firefighters use in the course of the their work. They are also given a classroom like discussion of the various pieces of equipment that are in use during the response to a fire event.
For many kids, the culminating event is the chance to shoot the always popular firehose. Thank you to Malad Elementary School Kristle Jensen for taking these pictures!

There is a lot to learn about firetrucks, which are the most impressive components of the firefighting toolkit.

The fire hose is the most popular part of the day.

Students take their turn with the high pressure water stream.

The bay has a range of vehicles that are used in firefighting.
