This year, Malad held three weekends of horseraces, which are now in the books.  While there was one Saturday race that had to be canceled over the course of the three weeks (due to the requirement to fill at least six full races a day), there was a lot of racing action to be had nevertheless. 

Last weekend’s races saw the presentation of blankets, and featured a race dedicated to Kadence Jones, who is recovering from a recent bone marrow transplant.  Jone’s mother Emily and her sister Brynnlee were on site in the winner’s circle while her father and other members of the family were in Salt Lake where Kadence is currently being cared for.  She was diagnosed with Diamond-Blackfan Anemia, and her sister was the donor in her recent surgery.  A raffle was held for Kandence, and members of the family and supporters were in attendance with their “#TeamKadence” shirts.

Over the course of the horse races, one of the constants who rarely get a shoutout were the workers at the betting windows, who included: Jody Bosley, Emily Searle, McKenzie Leckie, Shawnee Bonnell, Danine Robson, Amber Williams, Connie King, Erica Giles, Amy Isaacson, Vickie Williams, and Lisa Martin.  

Races are sanctioned by the Idaho State Racing Commission.  Malad’s Director of Racing is Todd Thomas, and the racing Secretary is
Becky Grant.

The races themselves are sponsored by a long list of sponsors, including the Fair board.  The Fair board  includes members Ken Moss, Chairman, John Hardy, Vice Chair, Todd Thomas, Lacey Clark, Eric Eliason, Shanae Blaisdell Hugo Ramos, Diane Skidmore, Secretary.  

Ireland Bank, with Mary Sue Thomas and Kacey Keller on hand for every weekend, sponsored and put on stick races for the kids between races, which went a long way toward keeping sometimes antsy young ones happy.

The American Legion, and American Legion Auxiliary ran the beer and food booths inside the track, and a number of food vendors added to the offerings outside.

Announcer Shaun Kurek kept thing lively and moving along.

Saturday

The first race, a Quarter Horse Maiden with a blanket sponsored by Silver Spur Insurance, was won by Mz Cartel, owned by Miguel Zavala, and ridden by Julian Zavala.  In second was Racey Rooster, owned by Linford Ranch Horses and ridden by Jesus Flores.  Third went to One Famous Bambi, owned by Gloria Ortiz and jockeyed by Joe Antonio Figueroa.

The second race, a Quarter horse Maiden with a blanket sponsored by Super Sport Farm, was won by Ozark Mountain, owned by John D. McBride and jockeyed by Carmen Vasquez.  Be Dynasti, ridden by Eric Ayala and owned by Benedito Estrada placed second.  Am Secret Eagle, owned by Dorian Montero and ridden by Oscar Villa, came in third.  

The third race, another Quarter Horse Maiden with a blanket sponsored by Mountain Valley Masonry, was won by Tillys Kiss a Cowboy, owned by Five Livestock Co, and ridden by Eric Ayala.  Second was won by Jj Easter Bug, owned by Glen and Jill Jamison, and jockeyed by Oscar Villa.  Third went to Ivoryquest, owned by Wade F. Hyer and ridden by Carmen Vasquez.

The fourth race, with a blanket sponsored by Central Service, was won by Jess the Train Dulce, owned by Monty Arrossa, and ridden by Oscar Villa.  Second was won by Eqh Special Phorses, owned by Martha Mercado.  Third place went to Steakarun, owned by Jesus Gomez and ridden by Carmen Vasquez.

The fifth race was a Quarterhorse Derby with a blanket sponsored by Malad Plumbing, and was won by Kcross Poolby, owned by Krystal Butterfield and ridden by Eric Ayala.  Second went to Idaho Jess, owned by Dorian Montero, and ridden by Never Marin. Third place went to Famous Prizes, owned by Ricardo Castillo and Rainee Browning and jockeyed by Jose Espinoza.

The six race was a Quarterhorse Maturity, and was won by Rc Mayito Gotcorona, owned by Rafael Cuenca and ridden by Ricardo del Sid.  Second place went to Smokin Lil Wagon, owned by Glen and Jill Jamison and ridden by Jesus Flores.  Third place was won by Bnb Hasta La Luna, owned by Rainee Browning and ridden by Jose Espinoza.  

Sunday

The first race, the Boyd Varney Memorial Race with a blanket sponsored by the Boyd Varney Family, was won by My Cajun Queen, owned by Ralph Hartline, and ridden by Never Marin.  In second was Mz Whisky, owned by Sebastian Martiznez and ridden by Angel Armenta.  Third went to A Tilted Taste, owned by NDN Running Stable and jockeyed by Oscar Cervantes.

The second race, with a blanket sponsored by Malad Gun Club, was won by Pattys Boy, owned by Carla Diaz and jockeyed by Oscar Villa.  Paint the City, ridden by Angel Armenta and owned by Efrain Acosta placed second.  Hp Justified Alibi, owned by Abel Romero and ridden by Raphael Romero, came in third.  

The third race, an Overnight Futurity with a blanket sponsored by Ireland Bank, was won by Cd Tempt Da Cartel, owned by Daniel Lee, Carol Lee, and Ed McNelis, and ridden by Oscar Villa.  Second was won by Jr Dynasty Chick, owned by Cesar Luna, and jockeyed by Angel Acevedo.  Third went to Amazon Delivers, owned by Bruce Hillman and ridden by Jesus Virgen.

The fourth race was won by Jj Miss Jessie Bug, owned by Glen and Jill Jamison, and ridden by Jesus Flores.  Second was won by Blue Gunner, owned by Bruce Hillman and ridden by Jesus Virgen.  Third place went to Signatures Taxman, owned by Laramie Wheeler and ridden by Never Marin.

The fifth race was an Overnight Futurity with a blanket sponsored by the Fairboard, and was won by Gachala, owned by Ricardo Castillo and Rainee Browning and ridden by Oscar Villa.  Second went to One Dulce Eagle, owned by Castillo and Browning, and ridden by Angel Armenta. Third place went to Cm Heart of an Eagle, owned by Ricardo Castillo and Rainee Browning and jockeyed by Ricardo del Sid.

The six race was a Mixed Breed Derby with a blanket sponsored by the Fair Board, and was won by A Jazzy Tres Seis, owned by W3 Farms and ridden by Oscar Villa.  Second place went to El Treen, owned by Adrian Aleman and ridden by Raphael Romero.  Third place was won by Sheknowsshepunky, owned by Edwrd Jamison and ridden by Jesus Virgen.  

The traditional seventh race was a thoroughbred allowance, won by Conch Daddy, owned by Tyrrill Tsosie and ridden by Angel Armenta.  Second went to Leap Day, from the same owner, ridden by Jesus Flores.  Thegreatgeneration, owbed by Gloria Ortiz, came in third, ridden by Oscar Villa.
