The newly formed MHS Dragon Fire Drumline & Color Guard is set to debut in this year’s Fourth of July Parade. After only a few weeks of practice, the fledgling organization is taking to Malad’s streets to bring their cadence and choreography to the city’s Fourth of July celebration. “This school has a proud tradition of marching band excellence,” said Foster Garrett, MHS band director, “we’re excited for this next generation of students to carry on that excellence.” After receiving official club approval from the school board, the drumline and color guard got to work immediately, holding several practices per week in preparation for this year’s parade. “We couldn’t be more proud of the work the student’s have put in,” said Krista Karn, color guard instructor, “this is completely new to all of the students and they’ve come a long way in a very short amount of time.” The drumline and color guard is set to march behind the float holding the school’s band, adding both volume and flare to the music, while performing cadences and choreography of their own. “It’s a pretty young group,” said Bryce Casselman, marching instructor, “most of them are 9th and 10th graders filling roles traditionally held by upperclassmen, but you wouldn’t know it. They’ve learned to play their instruments, memorized music and flag routines, and how to march: taking each new challenge in stride.” The Dragon Fire Drumline and Color Guard has been the recipient of many generous donations and grants, which has helped the organization buy equipment, music, and uniforms.
