Lady Dragons end regular season on new field

May 07, 2025 01:18PM ● By Allison Eliason

The Lady Dragons graduate nine seniors from the 2025 team.

The Lady Dragon softball team finished their regular season in an historic way as they played Soda Springs on Thursday, May 1.  After waiting and watching for more than a year for their new field to be ready, the MHS softball team was finally given the ok to have their first game on the new softball across from the Malad High School.  Malad fans showed up to fill the stands on the momentous day to celebrate both the opening day of the new field and the graduating seniors that would be playing their final regular season home game.

Before jumping into the game, Superintendent Jon Abrams emceed a small ribbon cutting ceremony.  Abrams said, “We know you can win on the worst field in the state, now let’s see you win on the best field in the state!”

Giving the girls the honor of cutting the ribbon, Head Coach Bri Adams commented on the new field saying, “This is an amazing field and we are so excited!  We were thankful for what we had because it’s all we had before, but this is going to be awesome. The girls are so excited to finally have a dugout.  And funny as it is, every time they slide on this new dirt they say how nice it is.”

Coach Adams asked retiring Superintendent Abrams to also throw the first pitch of the new field, saying, “There are a lot of people we could have asked but without him, we wouldn’t have this new field.  He is the one that made sure this went through.  He deserves to throw that first pitch.”

It didn’t take long for the Lady Dragons to show just how well they could win on the new field.  Starting in the field, Malad forced three quick outs- two from Riglee Peterson in the pitcher’s circle and the other from Tylee Venable at first with the assist from second baseman Brylee Oglesbee.

They continued to dominate the game as they moved into the bottom of the inning as Peterson hit a home run on the first pitch of the game.  The homer wasn’t the only one of the day, even for Peterson.  Over the four inning game, the MHS team tallied four home runs by Logan Maroney, Oglesbee, and Peterson who had two.  Teasing, Coach Adams said to her players, “Are we sure that new fence is up high enough?”

In addition to the home runs, the Lady Dragons had a strong hitting game on the field’s inaugural day.  Venable had two doubles, with Oglesbee and Daniels slugging a triple each.  Malad’s base running was near perfection as they advanced their way around the bases, keenly watching for openings to make their way around back to home.

Peterson pitched a perfect game, committing zero errors, walking zero hitters, allowing no runs or hits while striking out 7 of the 12 batters faced.  Of the 42 pitchers thrown over the four inning game, Peterson threw an impressive 34 strikes.

After the final inning of the game, the team and fans recognized the nine graduating seniors of the Lady Dragon softball team, including Tylee Venable, Hadlee Summers, Brylee Oglesbee, Teagan Daniels, Anistyn Tovey, Marinn Brown, Bostyn Combs, Kallie Daniels, and Riglee Peterson.

“It’s a rare thing to have so many players stick with a sport throughout their high school career.  We as coaches are so thankful for all of these girls and what they have given this program over the last four years,” shared Coach Adams

Previously in the week, the Lady Dragons had their final away game as they took on the West Side Pirates on Tuesday, April 29.  Playing five innings, the MHS team tallied their highest scoring game with 22 runs, putting up 5 in the first inning, 7 in the third inning, 2 in the fourth inning, and 8 in the fifth.  Aubrey Shulz led the team in hitting with 3 runs on 4 hits in 5 at bats, collecting 3 RBIs.  Shulz singled in the first and third innings, then doubled in the fourth and fifth innings.

Malad had played a quick and strategic game running bases as they collected six stolen bases for the game, led by Combs and Oglesbee with 2 each.

With their regular season over, the Lady Dragons move to their postseason district tournament.  Hosting it on their new field, the Lady Dragons won their first game held Monday, May 5 against the Soda Springs Cardinals 16-0.  They play again Tuesday afternoon against the Declo Hornets.
