The MHS track and field team has been running at a fast pace, their last week packed with four days of competition. Participating in the Cardinal Invite in Soda Springs, the West Side Invitational Track Meet, and the two-day Tiger/Grizz Invitational, the team tallied nearly 200 total event appearances as a team.
Beginning their busy week of competition on Wednesday, April 23, the Dragon athletes faced off in a three team competition with Soda Springs and North Gem High School. The small meet was a great opportunity for the MHS athletes to lead out in the competition. Malad tallied 39 Top 5 finishes at the meet, with few finishes outside the Top 10. The smaller competition also allowed the Dragon track athletes a chance to compete in events outside their usual few.
The following day, the MHS team contended in a second conference track meet hosted by West Side High School. Going up against teams from Pocatello, West Side, Aberdeen, Grace, Bear Lake, West Jefferson, Marsh Valley, and North Fremont, the Dragons tallied 38 new personal records, pushing themselves to compete at their very best level. Justin Toone landed a 3rd place finish in the high jump, jumping 5’ 6” before going out. Kenadee Howe earned 2nd place in the 200m run with a personal best time of 28.34.
Friday and Saturday featured the Tiger/Grizz track meet held in Idaho Falls, a large competition with 37 teams in all participating. Running Freshman, JV, and Varsity events, the meet gave ample opportunities for the Malad athletes to aspire for their best performance.
In an impressive showing, Gabe Hooste won first place in the javelin, throwing a new personal record at 162’ 6”. Halie Palmer had two Top 10 finishes, taking 9th place in the 100m and 7th place in the 200m. Competing in the Freshman race, Brielle Bastian placed 2nd in both the preliminary race and in the final, finishing the day with a new best time of 1:01.52. Aezlyn Summers took 3rd place in the Freshman 1600m race with a new personal record of 5:51.25.
The MHS track and field team continue to make significant progress both as a team and as individuals in their various meets and events. The Dragon track schedule has only one meet, held in Declo on May 1, before the District competitions are upon them. The District meet will be held on May 7-9 in Kimberly, Idaho at the Bulldog Stadium.
