County Hall of Fame Inductee Elton Ashton

The 14th Oneida County Hall of Fame banquet will be on Monday, May 19, at the Event Center, beginning at 6:30 with a dinner catered by Marla Jones.  Inductees to the Hall of Fame this year are Elton Ashton and Roslyn Brimhall. (Information about Roslyn will be in next week’s Idaho Enterprise.)

To be honored for his public service, especially his service to the military veterans of Oneida County and the State of Idaho, will be Elton Ashton. Elton was born in Woodruff in 1928 and went to school in Woodruff and Malad, graduating from Malad High School during World War II.  Like so many young men at that time, Elton joined the military service immediately after high school. On November 27, 1945, at age 17, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served on the U.S.S. Iowa. He joined the military again in 1947 and served during the Korean Conflict.

Elton was involved in the American Legion after his military service, serving as Idaho’s National Executive Committeeman for two terms. He was elected Idaho State Legion Commander in 1971. He was chairman of the Idaho Veterans Affairs Commission for several years. He was a very active member of the local American Legion Ernest W. Jones Post #65 until he died at age 62 in 1990.

Elton was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, president of the Eagles, and president of the Malad Area Chamber of Commerce.  He began managing the Chat ‘n’ Chew Restaurant in 1964 and purchased the business in 1968. He supported all athletic programs in Malad and was a major promoter of the Oneida County Fair.

He married Marcedis Hill in 1951; they had three daughters (Cydney Ipsen, Sandra Colton, and Trudy McMurtrey).

Tickets for the banquet are $30 and can be obtained from Susan Wittman (208-709-6888) or at the Malad City Office.  Only limited tickets will be available at the door so please get tickets ahead of the date.
