5 YEARS AGO (2019)

Businesses are gearing up for the annual Idaho Enterprise “Gobblin’ It Up at Thanksgiving” contest. The prize is worth it! A delicious, juicy Thanksgiving turkey!

On Wednesday, November 6, current and past Oneida County Commissioners celebrated the end of construction of Old Highway 37, The Narrows in western Oneida County.

Kaylee Ward, the daughter of Jason and Jaci Ward of Idaho Falls, and the granddaughter of Charles Owen and Jane Ann Ward of Woodruff, was recently names as the third runner-up in the Miss Bonneville Pageant sponsored by Bonneville High School.

The annual Veterans Day Memorial Program was held in two performances on Veterans Day, November 11, 2019, at the Malad Elementary School auditorium, where elementary fourth grade students under the direction of Mrs. Christine Smith and the Malad High School Concert Band and Malad High School Choir under the direction of Mr. Foster Garrett, performed.

The first SEITec Work Place Experience for this school year has been completed!

Darrenger Wrigley, son of Maquel and Darren Wrigley of Holbrook, Idaho, was mentored by a former graduate of SEITec and Malad High School, Class of 2018, Dale Jacaway. That graduate is the operator of Western Fabrication with his father and owner Crag Jacaway. Dale completed his SIETec experience at Weese Motor, Tremonton, in auto mechanics; however, his first love is welding and after graduation from MHS, Dale completed his Associate’s Degree from ISU.

Darrenger was required to complete sixteen hours of a supervised learning experience as part of his requirement to graduate from SEITec, a charter school under the auspices of Malad High School. Darrenger has attended Declo schools and is now an official member of the Class of 2020 at Malad High School.

Staci Tripp with the Oneida Soil & Water Conservation Services (NRCS), provided a presentation to Malad Elementary School students grades one through five, in conjunction with Conservation Days.

10 YEARS AGO (2014)

During the Halloween Dance at the Malad Middle School, a winner was chosen for the Perfect Attendance Contest at that school. Sixty-seven middle schoolers had perfect attendance from the first of the school year until October 16. Out of these students the name of Garren Huckaby was randomly drawn as the winner of an iPad Mini.

The Williams sisters, Darlene Nielsen, Hanna Lou Williams and Barbara Bingham, and Barbara’s sister-in-law, Cheryl Linn, of South Jordan, Utah, recently enjoyed one of their annual sister’s trips this fall on a Panama
Canal Cruise.

On October 30, the Stone PTO provided Halloween games, crafts, and treats for the Stone Elementary students. Stone school students are: Dorothy and Toto – Emma Bird; Trucker – Nathan Edwards; the Joker – Quade Carter; Mario – Brigham Hubbard; Ninja – Draven Smith; Ironman – Hyrum Smith; Vampire Princess – Brooke Beckstrom; Bumblebee – Julissa Lopez; Gruesome Dude – Ezra Hubbard; Skeleton Bride – Sydnee Sorenson and Vampire Girl – Lilly Smith.

The Red Cross Blood Drive held on Tuesday, November 4 sponsored by the Malad American Legion and Legion Auxiliary, was another great success according to Rick Madsen, American Legion Commander.

The members of the Malad High School cross-country team took time out of their busy schedules to visit with residents at the Nursing home in October.

The residents were excited to have the young men visit and enjoyed telling them stories of their younger years. The team members were happy they could help brighten someone’s day. Team members are Kaleb Mills, Robby Steffenhagen, Benjamin Waldron, Gabe Cherry, Justin Hubbard, Willard Wray, Daegon Haycock, Dylan Thorpe, Garrett Larsen, Kalob Ihler, Gage Cobabe, Dallin Atkinson, Josh Stayner and Hayden Peterson.

15 YEARS AGO (2009)

Hess Pumice Products, Inc. announced a retirement celebration for Lloyd Hubbard. Hub’s maintenance days began with Packer Motors in Brigham. He worked for thirty-four years as an automotive mechanic for Ren’s Chevrolet in Malad and earned the reputation of being the best carburetor mechanic in the valley. Hess Pumice has been fortunate to have Hub as a Heavy Duty Technician for the past fifteen years.

PFC Zach Starr graduated from Army basic training at Fort Benning, Georgia as an expert rifleman and with a perfect P/T score. He then attended airborne training at Fort Benning and graduated on October 9. Starr reported to Fort Polk, LA with the 10th Mountain Division. Zach is 2009 graduate of Malad High School and is the son of Marty and Jayme Hill.

The Malad Dragon’s fell to Declo 40-34 in double overtime at the 2A Idaho State Football Playoffs in Holt Arena.

Players of the week are the following: Offensive Player of the Week, Kaden Goddard; Defensive Player of the week, Jordan Schwartz; Special Team’s Player of the Week, Derek “Bama” Stagner; Hit of the Week, Tallen Boyer; Lineman of the Week was the entire Offensive Line, which includes Jason Gilgen, Braden Bennett, Bubba Crump, Cody Hess and Tallen Boyer and Scout of the Week was Chase Neiffenegger.

20 YEARS AGO (2004)

 Army National Guard soldiers, Spc. Garrett Hess, Spc. Phillip Bott and Sgt. Shawn Williams, from Malad, are home on leave before reporting to Louisiana prior to deployment to Iraq.

Malad native, Dustin W. Smith, has been appointed by the Oneida County Commissioners as the new Oneida County Prosecuting Attorney. He will assume office immediately, and intends to relocate to Malad with his family as soon as possible.

Russell Barton Talbot has accepted a call to serve a two-year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Australia Adelaide Mission. He is the son of Doyle and the late Donna Talbot.

Elder Cade Joseph Beeton, son of Kent and Randi Beeton, has been called to serve a two-year mission in the Jacksonville, Florida mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. 

30 YEARS AGO (1994)

After 78-years of servicing the residents of Oneida County and the surrounding area, Ren’s Chevrolet has announced it will cease operations within the next few weeks, but for the present, doors remain open. According to Ren Thomson, “Due to circumstances beyond our control it is necessary to terminate our franchise with Chevrolet Motor Division, Buick Motor Division and Oldsmobile Motor Division. Thomson and his son, Marc, said that several factors including the small population base, age of the local population, and the high expectations of the motor divisions have made it increasingly difficult for small town franchises to survive.

Eleven Malad High School drama students, under the direction of Drama Teacher Sue Skeen, participated in the District Drama Festival at Highland High School in Pocatello. Those participating were Emily John, Beverly Bott, Janice Nimer, Crystal Ludlow, Jennifer Hess, Jared Robbins, Travis Gugelman, Jason Ward, Josh Gugelman, J.T. Heyder and Mike Ludlow.

Modern Woodman of America Camp 6886, Malad, plans to honor Verlin M. Allen and Verna L. Allen, at a dinner being held at the Dude Ranch Café.

The Allens are being given the special honor in recognition of their leadership and involvement in the community.

40 YEARS AGO (1984)

The National Honor Society inducted 11 new members into the organization at a school assembly. Those new members are Wendy May, Nan Taylor, Travis Atkinson, Heidi Broadhead, Cindy Howard, David Jensen, Don Jones, Lara Knutsen, Marc Pett, Lonny Ward and Michelle Ward.

Current members of the Honor Society are Teresa Evans, Debbie Christensen, Rosi Fallis, Angela Jensen, Craig Jensen, Steve Lloyd, Loa Dawn Peterson, Deron Scott, Shawn Steed, Stacy Thomas and Ann Marie Weeks.

Twenty-two Pink Ladies volunteer their time to the Oneida County Hospital. The members of the volunteer group are Melba Jensen, president; Clarice Lewis, first vice-president; Helen Werth, second vice-president; Pearl Williams, secretary; Betty Jones, treasurer; Ruth Thomas, publicity and historian; Faye J. Thomas, installation officer; Hazel Lusk, Hazel Ezell, Ovelear Waldron, Helen Dennis, Denee Jones, Orpha Davis, Annabel Williams, Reba Henrie, Joyce Hess, Percilla Abbott, Joan Potts, Shelba Thomas, Louise Williams, Lenna Davis and Marie Neal, Honorary Members.

50 YEARS AGO (1974)

Airman First Class Vicky Jones, U.S. Air Force and her daughter Amy, arrived at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Stuart Tubbs. Airman Jones is attending a special school at Hill AFB, Ogden. Airman Jones is stationed at Mather AFB, California and lives at North Highland.

Elton Ashton, past commander of the Idaho department of the American Legion, has been appointed to serve as a member of the Legion’s National Commission on Veterans Affairs and Rehabilitation.

Cub Scouting leaders from the Malad LDS Stake attended a meeting at the Methodist church in Pocatello. Those attending were Ilene Corbridge, Judy Jones, Emolou Parry, Louaine Hadfield, Malad and Oneita Howell and Trina Gibbs, of Portage.

Announced as Mr. and Miss Mirror for 1974-75 were Brian Jeppsen and Lori Eliason. They were given trophies and danced to the theme song, “Just You ‘N Me” during intermission.

The drama class went to Preston for the Idaho 5th District Drama Festival. Events, students and results follow: Humorous solo, Lynn Hess, excellent; dramatic solos, Jan Naugler and Tracy Bybee, good; Brad Bowen, excellent; duo-acting, Gayle Hansen and Arch Williams, superior; pantomime solos, Wendy Sweeten, Patty Illum, Miriam Dredge, excellent; group pantomime, Becky Crowther, Diane Crowther, Gina Byrd and Cindy Griffiths, good.

60 YEARS AGO (1964)

Leon J. Castleton, the music instructor at Malad High, announced the names of those band and chorus students who will attend the District Music Clinic at Preston. This clinic is the assemblage of the top high school musicians from this district to play and sing music and pieces of a more difficult level. Those who will attend from the chorus are Rosalind Jones, Cheryle Hess, Jackie Price, Diane Williams, Donette Neal, Rosie Williams, Rosie Deschamps, Annette Davis, Janice Blaisdell, Carol Dawn Ward, Lugene Jones, Craig Thomas, Mark Grover, Helen Castleton, Ren Ray Bowen, Vickie Grover, Paul Neal, Tom Colton, Bob Christophersen, Barry Crowther, Linda Sue Evans, Rolene Jones, Pauline Pilgrim, Sheila Price, Lois Kent, Judy Evans, Darla Nalder, Susan Steed, Pat Williams, Joan Ward, Marilee Eliason and Sandy Bowen.  Those going from the band are Lorene Ward, Lonny Gleed, Wynn Price, Craig Allen, Duel Wuthrich, Steven Sorensen, T.D. Jones, Lynda Peden, Ann Byrd, Linda John and Tom Perkins. 

Nolan Blaisdell, Jr., Dale Hawkins, Fred Davis and David Evans left Monday for Los Angeles to seek employment.

To September 1, 1964, 302 U.S. soldiers had been killed and 1,100 wounded in the South Viet Nam war.

Leopoldville, the Congo – The leader of a Communist-backed rebel regime in the eastern Congo has declared 60 Americans and nearly 800 Belgians trapped by his rule are considered prisoners of war.

70 YEARS AGO (1954)

Gordon South arrived home from San Diego where he just completed his boot training in the U. S. Marine Corps, to spend a leave at the home of his parents Mr. and Mrs. Russell South. Gordon was one of nine from the entire group to be chosen to remain in the states. After his leave he will go to Jacksonville, Florida to study aviation mechanics.

 A/3/C Errol Curtis Thomas left Wednesday to report to the Air Force Base at Hamilton, California after spending a 10-day leave at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Curtis Thomas. His parents and Miss Connie Criddle accompanied him to Salt Lake City.

Coach AJay Jones’ Malad High School Dragons ended a highly successful grid campaign with a 24-12 win over the Montpelier Bears Friday afternoon. The non-league contest was played at Malad. The season wind-up found Malad sitting in first place in the Idaho Gem Ten League and also atop a very satisfactory 7-1 won and lost record.

Karen Warner, Twin Falls, University of Idaho freshman has been chosen as the 1954 Queen of Violets by the Idaho Chapter of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity.

Miss Warner is a music major and a pledge of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Warner, Karen is the granddaughter of Mrs. Luella Warner and Mr. and Mrs. J. F. Fredrickson, Malad. 80 YEARS AGO (1944)

Mr. and Mrs. Thomas J. Davis received a telegram from the government Saturday November 4, stating that their son, Parley Davis was missing in action since October 11 in Italy. In the meantime they have received four letters from Parley dated October 14, 20, 25, 27 so they feel that there must be some mistake. He stated in his letter that he had lost all of his personal belongings and he also has a new address. He entered the service April 20, 1942 and landed in West French Africa, October 24, 1942.

In a photo in The Idaho Enterprise, Governor C. A. Bottolfsen called the attention of a group of Navy volunteers to “Navy Day,” October 27, during their visit to the state house. The youths, all 17-year-olds, were enlisted in the Naval Reserve and regular Navy and are Khalil Scott, Malad; Eugene Tew, Malad; Stewart McClure, Pocatello; Robert Evans, Malad; Lyle Tapper, Malad; Robert Neeley, Pocatello; Leonard Dalpino, Pocatello; Boyd Conley, Malad and Merlin Christensen, Pocatello.

Mr. and Mrs. E. E. Smith have received word that their son, Frank Smith has been advanced to a major. He is an engineer in the Army stationed at Detroit, Michigan.

Idaho Falls Idaho - Back from Salt Lake where they dropped a gridiron decision to East High in the Celery Bowl game, the Idaho Falls Tigers were forced to swallow their second consecutive defeat when they bowed to Malad’s hard-hitting Dragons, 7 to 6 here Friday afternoon. The game marked Malad’s first appearance here in football competition in years.

Cpl. William Hughes, son of Mr. and Mrs. James Hughes Sr., who is in the armament infantry stationed overseas, was awarded the Purple Heart for action in France. He is now in the U. S. A. hospital plant of England.
