MHS Cheer Headed to State

The Malad High School Cheerleaders are headed to the State Cheer Competition with their Pom Routine in a year of challenges and setbacks that they were determined to overcome.  Putting it all on the line in their District Competition on Friday, February 9 at the Snake River High School, they heard their names called out over the loudspeaker as they qualified for state level contest.

At Friday’s competition, the MHS Cheer Team went up against teams from Aberdeen, Soda Springs, Bear Lake and North Gem, earning a close 3rd place and a spot at the State competition.  The team also had the opportunity to perform their Stunt Routine that had received 1st Place throughout the season as an exhibition for the audience.  The Malad team were proud to have two Cheerleaders, Delanie Walton and Myriam Teeples, that also received the Academic Award for a GPA of 3.79 or higher.

Head Coach Jennifer Hill proudly shared, “These girls are young and small in number but they worked hard to be ready for this moment and it all paid off for them Friday. We’ve practiced all season between cheering on our Dragon teams to perfect every part of our routine, to have fun, and to show lots of energy while performing and it showed Friday. The judges’ comments and scores were the best we’ve had all year. I’m so proud of them for never giving up, for digging in and giving it their all to be the best they could be.

“It was fun to watch it all come together Friday as they performed and the crowd cheered them on. They have been fun girls to Coach and we have loved how much love and respect they have for one another. We knew the Competition wouldn’t be easy because we’ve all scored pretty close all season with these teams and at District every team was ready. When they announced the winners, the girls just screamed then we all cried. It was definitely a victory well earned by these cute girls.

“We have had the best supporting parents all year and I am so grateful for my coaching staff that have helped me coach this team to be their very best. We will spend the next two weeks cheering on our Dragons, perfecting our routine a little more then we will head to Boise for our State Cheer Competition on Saturday February 24th where we will face the best 1/A 2/A teams in the State.”

The State Competition will be held at the Idaho Ford Center in Nampa, Idaho beginning at 7:30am.  The 2023-2024 Malad Cheerleaders this year include sophomores Taylor Cowdin, Isabella Bowen, Destiny Brees and Rebecca McCrackin and freshmen Delanie Walton, Myriam Teeples and Ayla Coleman. The Cheerleaders are Coached by Head Coach Jennifer Hill, Assistant Coach Abrielle Goddard and Sam Jensen.
