It was a full week for the Malad Dragon wrestling program as they finished out their final matches at home.  Both boys and girls wrestling hosted the district duel meet, winning out against every team they went up against.  The Dragon wrestlers also hosted the Firth Cougars for their final regular season duel matchup while the Lady Dragons also competed in the Kimberly invitational tournament.

The weeks’ wrestles began on Wednesday, January 31 as the Lady Dragons hosted the first ever girls 5th district duels. After a long afternoon on the mats, the Lady Dragon team ended the meet undefeated, outscoring every team.  The final scores were Malad 30 Bear Lake 21, Malad 29 Grace 18, Malad 48 Soda Springs 18, and Malad 42 West Side 16.

Following the Lady Dragon district duels, the boys wrestling team had their final duel matchup of the season against Firth.  Before jumping into the matches, the graduating seniors were recognized, including Hunter Wray, Jace Potter, Dylan Moss, Tommy Angell, Lex Driskel, Blaiz Wright and Caleb Mathews.  Head wrestling coach Devin Morrison shared, “These seniors  have been great leaders and captains this year and will be missed. We are excited to watch what these young men accomplish as they end their final season as Dragon wrestlers.  They have worked hard and this is when that hard work pays off.”

Quoting MHS fans, “The Dragons did some amazing wrestling!” winning the duel 68-12.

The Malad fans played their part from the bleachers, cheering on their favorite athletes as they kept the excitement in the gym on high, resulting in some impressive work on the mats by the wrestlers that wanted to do their best wrestling for their home crowd. “Thank you to the parents and fans that support this team!” said the Dragon wrestling staff.

Friday, February 2, the Dragons hosted the 5th district duels against Bear Lake, Grace, West Side and North Gem, while Aberdeen and Soda Springs were not in attendance. Malad showed once again that they are the team to beat in the 5th district, winning every duel to earn the rights to keep the district trophy at home for another year.  The final scores were Malad 60 Bear Lake 21, Malad 62 Grace 14, Malad 78 North Gem 6, Malad 57 and West Side 18.

At the conclusion of the meet, Coach Morrison shared, “It is important to see how we stack up against the teams in our district.  Our kids did a great job and we look forward to the district tournament.”  The district tournament will be held in Bear Lake on Wednesday, February 14th, beginning at 10am.

The Lady Dragon wrestlers finished out the week on the mats as they traveled to Kimberly on Saturday, Feb. 3rd.  The ladies wrestled well, bringing home some hard earned hardware in their individual brackets. Results for the Lady Dragon wrestlers from the tournament were Bentley Oglesbee 5th at 107, Braylee Price 3rd at 107, Bella McCullough 3rd at 114, Dezirae Haven 4th at 120, Rylee Neilson 4th at 126, Aubrey Shulz 4th at 132, Cale Carter 1st at 152 and Bella Smith 3rd at 235.

The MHS girls wrestling team earned a 3rd place finish in the team standings behind Burley and Minico.  With the Kimberling the final tournament of the regular season, the Malad lady wrestlers now look to prepare for the District tournament on Feb 16-17, held in Pocatello, in hopes of winning a spot to wrestle in the State tournament on Feb. 23-24.
