Blaiz Wright and the Evanston wrestler went to double overtime where Malad’s Wright came out with the win
The Dragon Varsity wrestlers were back on the mats over the weekend as the varisty team competed at the Richardson Memorial tournament in Brigham City, Utah January 5 and 6. The tournament hosts some of the powerhouse wrestling programs and schools in Utah as well as tough teams from Wyoming. Our Malad wrestlers competed well against some of the best wrestlers in the state of Utah in all divisions.
The fight to the podium was a brutal one, no matter the bracket the MHS athletes competed in. But at the conclusion of the two day tournament, three Malad wrestlers their position on the medal stand. Malad’s freshman Drake Morrison defeated 4a state champion Lofthouse from Mountain Crest on his path to the finals. In the championship round, Morrison fought well, but came up short where he fought hard and became the 138lb runner up.
Senior Blaiz Wright had an exciting start to his tournament journey as he won his first match on Saturday against the Evanston wrestler in double overtime 7-2. Wright found his way to the 3rd/4th place match where he pulled out the win in the last two seconds against a tough Star Valley wrestler, earning the 3rd place medal.
Also bringing home a well earned 4th place medal for the Dragons was senior Jace Porter. Porter pinned his consolation semifinals opponent giving him the chance to himself into the 3/4 place match.
Head Coach Devin Morrson spoke about the weekend, saying, “We see some very tough competition at this tournament. Our kids wrestled well and looked really good. Wrestling these harder matches helps our wrestlers prepare for the tough matches they face headed into the district and state tournaments.”
Saturday the Lady Dragons, as well as other Dragon wrestlers not competing in Brigham City, wrestled at the Traeden McPherson Memorial tournament in Bear Lake. The Lady Dragons showed up fierce and won the ladies tournament with 90 team points and 8 individual medalist.
Individual medals included Braylee Price as Champion, Cale Carter as Champion, Bentley Oglesbee as Runner up, Rylee Nielson as Runner up, Aubrey Shulz as Runner Up, Bella Smith as Runner Up, Bella McCullough in 4th place, Destiny Brees in 4th place, and Evvie Williams winning one of her three matches for the tournament.
The Dragons that competed Saturday at the tournament wrestled well and several brought home medals. At 106lbs, Ayden Potter was the Runner up, at 113lbs Porter Mills was Runner up, at 120lbs Kimball Carter was Runner up, at 120lbs Carter Blaisdell took 3rd place, at
132lbs Alex Marshall took 3rd place and at 113lbs Caden Jeppson took 4th place.
The Dragons will next be wrestling at Ridgeline High School Wednesday, January 10th. Over the weekend, the wrestlers will compete at the Wendell tournament on January 12th and 13th.
