Sheldon Rex Jensen

Malad, Idaho --- With humble hearts we announce the passing of our dear husband, father, grandfather and friend, Sheldon Rex Jensen, on Thursday, September 28, 2023.  He was a giant of a man to all of us and an exemplary patriarch for our family.  His legacy will be cherished and his lighthearted teasing will be missed.  Sheldon, a lifelong resident of Malad, was born on September 13, 1935, to Rex and Thora Jensen.  After completing his high school education as a graduate of the Malad High School class of 1953, he continued his education at Utah State University before serving in the U.S. Army in the Korean Conflict.

He married Yvonne Kay Jones in the Logan LDS Temple on July 14, 1961.  They made their home in Malad where Sheldon worked for the State of Idaho Transportation Department and labored on the family farm.  Working alongside his children and grandchildren on the farm allowed him to foster a lasting family bond and teach the value of hard work.  For several years he was a part time butcher at the Millstream Grocery and after his retirement from the State of Idaho he worked for the Oneida County School District as a maintenance worker.  Sheldon liked vegetable gardening his whole life and in his later years he would plant extra so that he could share his harvest with many friends and neighbors.  There were very few sports Sheldon did not enjoy watching.  He was the biggest fan of his children and grandchildren in all their athletic events.

Sheldon had a love for people and his teasing style of communication was endearing.  His personality and desire to meet people afforded him many opportunities to serve others.  He was a lifelong member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served as a missionary in the Western Canada Mission, a Bishop, a High Councilor and a Young Men Leader.  He was active in the community and held positions with the Malad Valley Irrigation, Oneida County Youth Recreation Board and the Oneida County School Board.  Many members and students of the community have been recipients of his kind and loving service.

He is survived by his wife, Yvonne, and their 5 children: JoLynne (Keven) Price of Malad, Idaho; Michael (Trudi) Jensen of Boise, Idaho; Craig (Kimberly) Jensen of Highland, Utah; Kimberly (Larry) Johnson of Paul, Idaho; and Christopher Jensen of Malad, Idaho.  In addition, he is survived by his siblings: Jeannine Mills, Terral Jensen, Kathy Mathis and Diane Sines. He is the grandfather of 17 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and 2 granddaughters.  Funeral services will be held on Friday, October 6, 2023, at 12:00 p.m. in the Malad LDS Stake Center.  Friends may call at the Horsley Funeral Home on Thursday, October 5, 2023, from 7:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. and on Friday morning from 10:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.  Burial services will follow in the Malad City Cemetery.
