Iron Door Smokehouse Serves Up Local Fare

The Iron Door Smokehouse is an institution in Malad.  While not a restaurant in the traditional sense, the Iron Door is a place that has been providing high-quality food to the community for almost five years as a catering outfit, and at the storefront on Mondays since November.

The Smokehouse is a family affair, run by the trio of Anita and Brian Jeppsen, and Breanna Jeppsen Charles.  Anita and Brian have been providing catered food, focusing on locally sourced food, for a variety of events over the years.  Weddings, funerals, birthday parties, family and class reunions, and date nights have all been graced by a wide range of foods from the Jeppsen kitchen.  In August, their daughter Breanna returned to Malad to help grow the business.  Since that time, the business has begun to open its doors on Monday for food pick up.  February saw the addition of an “International Night” featuring food from Italy, a tradition that the Smokehouse intends to continue.  The next country to be explored will be Jamaica, which the Jeppsens hope will happen sometime in April.

In addition, the trio also commits to providing food for various special days throughout the calendar.  Last week, for instance, those who were lucky enough to have made their way to the Smokehouse were rewarded with an amazing meal for St. Patrick’s day.  Irish Stew and Shepherd’s Pie were both ladled out throughout the afternoon to wide acclaim.  The Smokehouse typically prepares enough food to account for 100 meals, and so far has sold out more often than not.  Any leftover food is packaged as “Family Meals,” which have also been very popular.

The Smokehouse will not be open on Monday 28, since that week coincides with Spring Break, but they do plan to be open on April 4 with homemade lasagna.

Catering orders can be placed with the Smokehouse through their number (208) 549-9856, though Breanna advises that orders for the next few months are filling up quickly.

Based on the positive community response so far, the Iron Door Smokehouse hopes to be able to offer even more possibilities in the near future.  “We’d like to get to a place where we can open for lunch a couple days a week, and offer an International Night at least once a month,” Breanna says.  “We’d also like to be able to add a Dessert Night to what we do.”

The Smokehouse is dedicated to using locally sourced food as often as possible, and creating high-quality, home-style cooking.
