Varsity Boys Basketball

The Malad Dragons Boys team experienced a thrilling non-conference win over West Jefferson last Thursday, 69-59.  The win brings the team’s record to 3-8 as the beginning of conference play approaches.  In addition to great shooting (the team ended up shooting nearly 50% from the field) and a consistent high level of effort throughout the game (44 rebounds were recorded, beating West Jefferson in that stat by 9), defense was also a highlight, with MHS racking up 9 steals and a pair of blocks.  Also impressive were the 18 assists leading to points during the game.

JV and C Team Basketball

The C team played West Jefferson in Malad on Thursday, January 6. This was a pretty evenly matched game. The score was tied at 16 – 16 at half time. At the end of the third quarter, Malad had a slim lead, but they just could not hang on to that lead in the final seconds of the game, falling to West Jefferson 39 – 37.

On Friday, the C team battled North Fremont at North Fremont. They made the long trip to Ashton on Friday, January 7. Malad would get behind, but they did not give up and kept battling their way back. But they just could not keep pace with North Fremont and fell 46 – 29.

The final game of the week for the C team was against Ririe at Ririe on Saturday, January 8. At the end of the first quarter, Malad was trailing 14 – 10. But they did not give up. At the end of the first half, Malad had kept it close, and was trailing 25 – 22. They still kept right on fighting and ended the third quarter down 38 – 27. The game became a free for all with very little getting called and became a very physical game. But Malad did not quit fighting. They just could not cut in to Ririe’s lead and fell 47 – 39.

The JV team faced West Jefferson in Malad on Thursday, January 6. They had a big lead at the end of the first quarter, leading 24 – 10. They kept right on rolling and had a 42 – 21 lead at half time.  Malad and Ririe at Ririe on Saturday, January 8, turned in to an intense battle with both teams determined to fight to the end. At the end of the first quarter, Malad and Ririe were tied at 9 – 9. At half time, Ririe had a 17 – 13 lead. But the game was soon tied in the third quarter at 17. Malad pulled ahead 20 – 18 and then the game was tied at 23 to end the third quarter.  Malad went ahead 26 – 23 early in the third quarter. The battled continued to go back and forth with Ririe having a three point lead going in to the last few seconds of the game. Ryan Hubbard nailed a big three-point shot to tie the game at 31, sending it in to overtime. The game was intense in the overtime period, tied at 33 with seconds left. Ririe was able to get off their last second shot, which fell for them, and they took the win at 35 – 33.
