American Legion Dragons pick up three wins at home

The Malad American Legion Baseball team played three games at home. The Dragons were able to pick up three wins, defeating Soda Springs and Blackfoot in Malad.

On Monday, June 28, the Dragons faced Soda Springs in Malad. This game was played at the Malad City Park.

Malad came out ready to play after having been off for several days. They were quick to get the bats moving, scoring five runs in the first inning. Peyton Briggs, Jaden Ward, Traven Ward, Dillon Evans, and Kyler Horsley all crossed home plate in that inning. Stetson Higley also had a hit.

Malad added two more run in the second inning with Peyton Briggs and Traven Ward both crossing home plate for Malad. Malad now led 7 – 0.

Soda Springs was able to get a runner across home plate at the top of the third inning to cut Malad’s lead to 7 – 1. Malad had just one runner cross home plate in the bottom of the third inning to lead 8 – 1. 

Then, in the fourth inning, Malad scored four runs with Bridger Bastian, Dillon Evans, Kyler Horsley, and Stetson Higley scoring for Malad. Chase Briggs also had a hit. Malad led 12 – 1.

Jaden Ward and Timmy Jensen pitched for the Dragons in this competition. 

On Friday, July 2, the Dragons hosted Blackfoot for a double header. This game was played at the Malad City Park. Malad started Kyler Horsley on the mound. He was able to hold Blackfoot scoreless in the first inning. When Malad came up to bat, they were sending the ball all over the outfield. Grady Combs and Traven Ward both scored twice for Malad. Jaden Ward, Dillon Evans, Kyler Horsley, Tyler Wilson, Gaiden Combs, Chase Briggs, and Peyton Briggs all scored for Malad. The Dragons had a 11 – 0 lead after the first inning.

Malad once again held Blackfoot scoreless in the second inning. The Dragons added to their lead in the second inning with runs scored by Traven Ward, Jaden Ward, and Dillon Evans. Malad led 14 – 0.

Blackfoot was able to get on the board in the third inning with three runs to cut Malad’s lead to 14 – 3. Timmy Jensen came in to pitch the final outs of that inning for the Dragons. In the bottom of the third inning, Malad scored one run when Stetson Higley raced across home plate. Malad led 15 – 3.

Malad held Blackfoot scoreless in the fourth inning. The Dragons were able to get one more run across home plate when Timmy Jensen scored in the fourth inning. Malad took a 16 – 3 win.

Traven Ward and Kyler Horsley each hit a double in this battle. Dillon Evans hit a home run.

The two teams headed right into game two of the double header. This time, Grady Combs started on the mound for the Dragons. He was able to keep Blackfoot a bit unsettled and they were only able to put one runner on base in the first inning but he was never able to advance. But in the bottom of the second inning, Malad was hitting but the hits were going right to Blackfoot players. The first inning ended in a 0 – 0 tie. 

In the second inning, Combs again kept Blackfoot from scoring. Malad did get on the board in the bottom of the second inning when Bridger Bastian raced across home plate. Malad was up 1 – 0.

Combs kept Blackfoot was advancing around the bases in the third inning once again. Malad was able to get Gaiden Combs and Peyton Briggs across home plate. Malad now led 3 – 0.

Dillon Evans took the mound for the Dragons in the fourth inning. He was also able to keep their runners from advancing and the Dragons stayed in control of the game. In the bottom of the fourth inning, Stetson Higley raced across home plate. Malad led 4 – 0.

In the fifth inning, after keeping Blackfoot scoreless in the top half, the Dragons went to work on the bats. They were able to get runners on base and score on strong hits. Bridger Bastian, Stetson Higley, Tyler Wilson, Chase Briggs, Timmy Jensen, Grady Combs, Gaiden Combs, and Peyton Briggs all crossed home plate. Dillon Evans hit a double to drive the three runs in to end the game. Malad earned the win at 12 – 0.

On Tuesday, July 6, the Dragons hosted The Valley from Marsh Valley at home. They were then at Soda on Wednesday, July 7. They will finish off the week at Burley on Saturday, July 10, with games at 1:00 and 3:00 p.m.  They will finish off their season at Pocatello on Wednesday, July 14, at Halliwell Park and then at Shelley on Thursday, July 15. Both nights the games are scheduled for 4:00 and 6:00 p.m. The Dragons will then compete in the district tournament the following week at Halliwell Park in Pocatello.
