The Malad Dragons opened up the 2013 season with a solid victory againstMarsh Valley last Friday night. And while the players were excited to finally go into Marsh and get their first victory of the season, their focus now turns to Ririe. One of the players who will play a big role in the game against Ririe is this week’s feature player, Nishon Neal.

Nishon Neal is a 6’0″, 185-pound senior tight end and linebacker. He is one of four senior captains for the Dragons. Neal also is the long snapper for punts and PATs. Malad Head Coach Coda Tchida was quick to praise all that Neal brings to this team. He said, “his speed and great hands make him a mismatch for opposing defenses as he is bigger than cornerbacks and safeties and quicker than most linebackers. On the defensive side, he is the play caller and vocal leader, so he is vital in that aspect as well. Nishon also works hard in the weight room and can be found helping his teammates with plays and how to properly run routes, or working on his long snaps with punter and kicker, Brody Hubbard both before and after practice.

Neal is a three-sport star for the Malad High Dragons, playing basketball and baseball along with football. But this week’s game is the only thing on his mind. “We know Ririe is going to come out and try to establish their run game early, using both the speed option and the veer. While they lost a lot of size up front, we still have to remain focused on the defensive side of the ball because we do not know what to expect from them this year as this is their first game of the season,” he said.

Nishon also mentioned the preparation that goes into each week and the

amount of time the players spend off the field. “We watch a lot of film. Whether it’s last year’s film, or even a couple year’s ago, we watch a lot of it to prepare our defense and offense for what to expect when we get out on the field,” Neal said. He also noted that the main focus this week was cashing in on scoring opportunities and forcing turnovers. “If we can do that, everything else will fall in place and we should come out on top.”
Neal, like every other Malad player, is excited to get out in the new black unis under the lights in front of the home crowd for the first time this season. “The first home game is always the most exciting because we want to take care of business in front of our fans.”

Nishon and the rest of the Dragons will be in action Friday, September 6 at 7:00 p.m. at home against Ririe. Come out and support the Dragons as they look to capture their second straight win to start the season.
