45 YEARS AGO (1979) Trails End Cowbelles nominee for the “Betty Joan Brent Award” is Mrs. Fern Thomas who the Cowbelles selected because of her knowledge about the cattle industry, as she was caught in the above picture feeding her yearling registered Hereford bulls at her home Monday morning. Mrs. Thomas, a charter member of the Cowbelles and first president of the group will compete with nominees representing units throughout Idaho.

5 YEARS AGO (2019)

Hess Pumice Products was honored as a Top Business at the Zions Bank “Speaking on Business” luncheon on Feb. 8. The company was one of 10 recognized by Zions Bank President and CEO Scott Anderson for its example of entrepreneurship
in Idaho. 

Hess Pumice Products provides refined and precision-grade pumice with more than 300 custom blends. Its products are used in manufacturing for TV screens, computer chips, and other consumer electronics. Recently, they have expanded their products to support development of manufactured stones on buildings and high-quality grout used to stabilize soils and seal microfractures. Founded by Marvin Hess 64 years ago, this family-owned business has grown to employ 200 employees.

At the 13th annual Oneida County Crisis Center Valentine Gala Dinner and Auction, two Oneida County women were awarded the Dove Awards, for their service to the community. Honored were Nancy Asay and Marsha Schow by Marcia Stocks of the Crisis Center, who presented an award to each woman.

At the end of their district competition last week, the Malad High School Dragonettes were holding the district championship trophy after working hard to qualify many routines for state. 10 YEARS AGO (2014)

On Friday, February 7, the Crisis Center held its eighth annual Valentine Gala Dinner and Auction at the Malad High School Commons. During the dinner Dove  Awards were presented to Scott Doying and Brenda Winder.

Happy Valentine’s Day! Happily married for 64 and three-fourths years. Jay and BelvLene Baker will celebrate their 65th wedding anniversary on May 14, 2014. The couple has spent their entire married lives living in Holbrook or Malad.

15 YEARS AGO (2009)

The Malad City/Oneida County Economic Development Foundation (EDF) reorganized during its annual meeting. Elected chairman for 2009 was Doug Crowther, with Chris Simpson as vice chairman and Diane Allen as secretary, Other members of the Board are Chamber President Lance Tripp, Hospital Administrator Todd Winder, Malad Mayor Spence Horsley Oneida County Commissioner Cecil Sweeten, and School Trustee David Andersen.

Valentine Sweethearts for 60 years! Don and Carol Eliason have been sweethearts for 60 years. It all started while dating during their years at Malad High School. They and never met until then, as they had grown up in different parts of Oneida County.

Jason Larry Thomas has been called to serve as a full time missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He will labor for two years in the Mexico, Tampico Mission. He entered the Missionary Training center in Provo, Utah on February 4.

The Malad High School Cheerleaders are ready to defend their district title and earn a chance to compete at state this year. This year’s team includes: Carlie Stewart, Shaelynn Larrson, Emily Cudney, Shay Williams, Ashlee Checketts, Karen Cudney, Shala McKinney, Jessica Sorensen, Shawn’te Davis, Christina Greening, Brittney Tubbs, Kaylynn Bell, Janalie Jensen and
Lindzee Thompson.

25 YEARS AGO (1999)

When Mark Alder boarded his school bus for the morning run February 9, he was surprised to see it decorated with streamers, balloons and a poster declaring him “The 1999 Bus Driver of the Year.” Alder began driving bus for the Oneida School District ten years ago, in April 1989. 

Members of the Oneida School bus crew for 1999 are: Erma Hill, Wendy Thomas, Mark Alder, Spence Horsley, Rex Waldron, Paul Semrad, Tammie Neal, Albert Ekstrom, Brooks Thorpe, Larry Thomas, Everett King and Kelly Hill. This year the School District is busing 635 students from Sandridge, Arbon, Summit, Daniels, St. John, Cherry Creek, Stone, Holbrook, Samaria, Devil Creek and Deep Creek.

Oneida Long Term Care Facility’s Blue Ribbon Club has been recognized as one of the top six programs in the State of Idaho Restorative Director Sharon Jenkins was presented a special plaque at the fair, hosted by Idaho’s Department of Health & Welfare Bureau of Facility Standards in cooperation with the Idaho Health Care Association.

The BPA (Business Professionals of America) competed in their regional tournament in Pocatello. The girls who placed for the Malad chapter were Britney Baker, Karalee Waldron, Laura Kent, Julie Tubbs, Lynsey Firth, Brenda Forbush, Alyson Broberg, Trisha Williams, Nicona Sweeten and Lezlie Stokes.

Oneida County Hospital and Long-term Care residents celebrated Valentine’s Day by having a U.S.O. Show. The staff dressed as movie stars while entertainment and refreshments continued throughout the morning and afternoon. “Movie Stars” were the following: Kathy Hanson was Minnie Pearl, Dollie Williams was Dolly Parton, Tara Carter was Scooby Doo, Nellie Hamilton was Dale Evans, Judy Hobson was Mae West, Colleen Waldron was Carman Miranda, Pam Pickard was Ethyl Merman, Euarda Daniels was Elizabeth Taylor, Mike Daherty was Roy Rogers, Sharon Jenkins was Don Ho and Sheri Nester was Kate Smith.

30 YEARS AGO (1994)

A merger between the fair board and the racing commission was on the minds of eight citizens meeting with the Oneida County Commission. Expressing their views were Verlin Williams, Don Evans, Loyd Briggs, Ned Lewis, Boyd Lewis, Chuck Davis and Deon Jones.

The Oneida County Hospital Auxiliary, “Pink Ladies” began the New Year by presenting a check for $1,800 to the Long Term Care Facility. President Donna Vanderwood and treasurer Patricia Wright presented the check to the staff and hospital assistant administrator Bob Kent.

Pictured in The Idaho Enterprise are the new CowBelle officers that were installed at the membership luncheon held on February 10 at the Dude Ranch Café. Serving during 1994 will be Shawna Daniels, historian, Shannon Davis, vice president, Teresa Daniels, treasurer, Deon Jones, president and Janice Goddard, secretary.

Trevor Hess and Kenny Ward participated in the District Elks “Hoop Shoot” held in Idaho Falls. Trevor placed first in the 8-9 year-old category making 22 out of 25 baskets. Kenny placed 2nd in the 10-11 year-old category making 18 out of 25 shots.

45 YEARS AGO (1979)

Congressman George Hansen announced this week the appointment of Todd Esplin to the U.S. Air Force Academy at Colorado Springs, Colorado. Recently he won an appointment to the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York, nominated by Senator James McClure. Todd is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Esplin.

Malad High School Senior, Clair Neal received special recognition in two areas this past week. Clair has been nominated to “Who’s Who Among American High School Students” and was named to The Idaho Statesman All State Football Team for 1978 as a first team defensive lineman in the A-3 football team.

The Idaho Statesman gave Todd Allen honorable mention during All State Football Team nominations. Todd was a running back for the MHS team.

Trails End CowBelles have nominated Fern Thomas for the “Betty Joan Brent Award.” Fern was a charter member of the Oneida’s CowBelles formed in 1968  and was their first president. 

Pictured in The Idaho Enterprise earning first or second place in District A-3 wrestling tournament at Aberdeen last week and a berth in the state meet at Nampa are seven MHS mattmen: Tom Jenkins, Kevin Forbush, Glen Gillies, Todd Jones, Allen Edwards, DeRay Williams and
Bart Neal. 

Hosting the American Legion and Auxiliary Bowling Tournament last weekend, Malad bowlers representing the Ernest W. Jones Post 65 got pretty serious during the bowling competition, and at the conclusion, kept 1979 top honors at home for the coming year when Malad Legion team number 7 and Auxiliary team number 10 captured twin championships and received two honors. Members of the championship Legion team, with the help of number one supporter Erv Allen, who rolled a 2,363 series were, Cecil John, Theron Blaisdell, Dennis Thomas and Seth Thomas. Ruth Thomas, Carla Williams, Linda Daniels and Vicki Ekstrom posted a 2,311team score to be named the ’79 Auxiliary Champs.

55 YEARS AGO (1969)

A Malad Lions Club committee plans to have the building just north of the Dude Ranch Café remodeled by the time of the Miss Malad pageant, March 22, according to Charles Nielsen, committee chairman. The building was given to the Malad Lions Club by Mrs. Dorothy Fredrickson Jacoby and Mrs. Lois Fredrickson Warner. The late John F.
Fredrickson was a charter member of
the Malad Club.

A family gathering at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Dan C. Williams was in honor of their son, Terry, who will leave shortly to serve a mission for the LDS Church.

The MHS wrestling elimination matches held for the high school students were held on February 3. The winners will represent the school at the District wrestling meet. They are Keith Blaisdell, Quinn Deschamps, Dallan Nalder, Boyd Hess, Dan Scott, Mark Ipsen, Paul Willie, Rex Champneys, Lynn Bastian, Boyd Clark, Ryan Ward, Chuck Thomas and Bill Vanderwood.

65 YEARS AGO (1959)

A courageous young man who has overcome physical handicaps to graduate from Utah State University and subsequently do graduate work at two universities has established a book business on campus. John Roderick Jr., has opened “Bibliomanor” in the Temporary Union Building (formerly the TUB), just east of the University library.

In recognition of excellent scholastic achievement, John Arlen Jones, student at Brigham Young University, Provo, has been initiated into the honor society of Phi Kappa Phi. 

Mr. and Mrs. Cecil John announce the marriage of their daughter, Vicki Sue, to Albert Ekstrom, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lee Ekstrom. After a short honeymoon spent at Caldwell and Sun Valley, the newlyweds will make their home in Malad where
Mr. Ekstrom is employed at the Malad
Auto Repair.
