30 YEARS AGO (1994) Sherrie Johnson and Debbie Braker arrange a gift basket at The Blue Caboose, a new gift basket boutique on Bannock.

5 YEARS AGO (2019)

The bi-annual 4th-5th grade science fair was held at Malad Elementary School on Thursday, January 31. It would be safe to say that anything you may want to learn about science was represented by at least one student.

Don and Carol Eliason are celebrating 70 years together! They were married February 2, 1949 in the Logan LDS Temple.

They have spent their entire married life on the Eliason Ranch in Holbrook running a successful cattle business.

Don and Carol have raised five children: Donette Ringel, Judy Bush, Debbie Munns, Ken Eliason and Ron Eliason; 17 grandchildren and 29-plus great-grandchildren.

Together the Eliasons served in the Nauvoo, Illinois mission and at the Conference Center in Salt
Lake City.

Don and Carol have made many special and fun memories through the years. They celebrated their anniversary and both of their 90th birthdays with a family dinner.

On Wednesday, January 30, the Oneida County After School Program sponsored a free Fun Night at Malad Bowl that included bowling, pizza, pop and cookies.

Students enrolled in the After School Program, their families and friends all joined in on the fun.

The Malad High School Cheerleaders have worked hard to prepare for the Fifth District Cheer Competitions that will be held this weekend in Pocatello. This year’s team includes Breelle Daniels, Brenna Williams, Abrielle. Goddard, Callie Jensen, Jordan Brown, Jazmin Boling, Breanna Lloyd, Hannah Brown, Ashlynn Brown, MaTece Davis, Walker Olsen, Sadie Giles, Hannah Bird, Hallee Kimberling, Jade Daniels, Carina McCullough.  Also competing with the team will be drill team members Savanna Poulson and Hailey Williams.

The Malad High School Dragonettes are working hard to qualify for a chance to compete at state this weekend at their Fifth District Competition. This team includes McKinna Owens, Rebekka Smith, Bailey Timothy, Marian Smith, Hailey Williams, Ioana Dovinas, Savannah Poulson, Eda Idawahl, Laura Gatyon, Sydney Carey and Kristal Ford.

10 YEARS AGO (2014)

Bryn Haycock and Jacob Tubbs have been selected to represent the Malad High School Class of 2014 as Valedictorian and Salutatorian, respectively, at commencement exercises on May 21. 

Oneida County has a First Baby for 2014, and it is Holbrook’s newest resident! His is a first for this little community, to have an Oneida county first baby and a comment from his mother was that, “Something good happened in Holbrook!” The tiny new resident is a boy, Timber Raymond Hubbard, the sixth son of Raymond and Brandi Hubbard. He has a fuzzy, little blonde head and weighed in at 8 pounds 2 ounces and was 20 and one-half inches long. He was born at 7:31 a.m. on January 31, 2014.

The third annual Evening of the Arts will be held on Thursday, March 13, 2014 at the Malad High School Commons from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. The highlight of the evening will be the display of the original work of five local visual artists – Farrell Jenkins, Pennie Wolf, Ken Timothy, Evelyn Harrison and Scott Doying. 

Members of the Heritage Club were honored at the annual banquet of the Oneida Education Foundation. Those honored during the evening were those members who donated funds that moved them to a higher level in the Heritage Club. Those honored were Louis and Marla Dredge, Joe and Euarda Daniels, Luke and Shayna Waldron, Greg and Vickie Lamb and Ireland Bank. Three new endowments were established during the year as follows: The Robert Green Memorial Scholarship Fund, The F. Dennis Thomas Memorial Scholarship Fund and the Donald and Marjorie Vaughan Scholarship Fund.

15 YEARS AGO (2009)

The Malad High School Band played, the Swing Choir sang, and Mayor Spence Horsley welcomed the Special Olympics torch to Malad as the entourage -- comprised of a 120-member international team -- went through town Monday morning, stopping first at Malad High School and then at Malad Elementary.

Sheriff Jeff Semrad and Bill Denkers, Vice President of the Deputies Organization, presented plaques to Nick Gugelman as Search and Rescue Person of the Year, Justin Schwartz as Officer of the Year, and Bernice Weeks as Employee of the Year. They were also each presented a check for $50 and a hotel reservation for a night’s stay in Pocatello.

In his last meeting with the Oneida Hospital Board before stepping down as a county commissioner, Dr. Gerald Goodenough was honored by the Board for the unwavering support, knowledge and assistance that he provided during his tenure. Throughout his eight years of public service, Dr. Goodenough was in charge of overseeing the local medical facility. 

25 YEARS AGO (1999)

Ireland Bank has announced the following promotions: Bob Crowther has been promoted to vice President and Kathy Hubbard has been promoted to Branch Administrator.

Girls from the Junior class at Malad High School are making plans to participate in the Malad Junior Miss program to be held May 8, 1999 at the Malad Elementary Auditorium. The theme for this year’s program is “Heroes Among Us.” Joan Hawkins is this year’s chairperson with Cheryle Shepherd as co-chair. Kay Buttars is secretary and Lisa Lewis, historian/publicity.

Three Bannock County Sheriff’s Department officers warned residents attending a Citizens Academy February 11 not to dismiss gang and drug activities as big city problems because it’s the rural areas that are being targeted. The men emphasized that while the vast majority of today’s youths are good and do not commit crimes or join gangs, the menace is spreading at alarming rates. The best defense is an educated public, tenaciously dedicated to preserving their communities.

University of Idaho officials have announced the names of students honored for academic achievement during the school’s fall 1998 semester. Four are listed on the Dean’s List from Oneida County: Jennifer Hess, Agriculture and Letters and Sciences; Andrea Atkinson, Agriculture; David Jones, Engineering and Tara Wright, Law.

30 YEARS AGO (1994)

The Oneida Search and Rescue Unit installed new officers at its annual banquet last month. Roger Stockwell is the new commander, with Ray Davis first vice commander, Nick Gugelman second vice commander, Boyd Hess quarter-master/treasurer, and Garry Hess secretary. All will serve through 1994. Retiring Commander Ron Eliason serves in an advisory capacity.

A high-speed chase, which began in Box Elder County about midnight on February 2, ended at approximately 1:30 a.m. February 3 in Franklin County. John C. Hansen, 32, of Salt Lake City is being charged in Oneida County for DUI arrest, Delaying and Obstructing an Officer and a felony count of Eluding a Police Officer. Box Elder County will also file felony charges of Evading and Eluding a Police Officer and possibly a DUI.

Sherrie Johnson and Debbie Braker are excited about the grand opening of their gift basket boutique, The Blue Caboose, this Saturday. Located at 37 Bannock Street, just west of Ireland Bank, The Blue Caboose will specialize in gift baskets for all occasions, and provide home delivery service. 

45 YEARS AGO (1979)

Six area livestock associations banded together this week to offer a $600 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for the recent shooting of seven head of livestock in Oneida County.

Disco Fever! Malad Elementary Fourth and Sixth grade students performed before combined audiences of the elementary and Malad High School Monday afternoon following about six weeks of disco dancing instruction from Carol Fisher. Miss Fisher noted that disco dancing was incorporated into the students’ physical education program. Performing Monday afternoon were students of Carol Dawn Willie, Faye Jones, David Cowlishaw and Miss Fisher. What’s  their favorite dancing music? ‘YMCA’ of course!!

David M. Zivkovic has been called to serve a two-year mission in Vienna, Austria with a special calling in the Croation language. He will enter the Mission Training Center in Provo, Utah on February 15. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Zivko Zivkovic.

The newly renovated Logan Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was opened to tours this week with the inspection to continue through March 23. 

55 YEARS AGO (1969)

About 25 farmers and ranchers living along the route of Interstate Highway 15 South of Malad met with Idaho Department of Highway engineers here to discuss placing of underpasses and culverts. 

A six-unit motel opened Wednesday for business. Operating as Southgate Motel, the units are owned and operated by Mr. and Mrs. Gordon South, who also own South Floral. Four of the units are in the Town House, 4 South Main. 

New members of the Malad Volunteer Fire Department are Varsel E. Christophersen and Bob Treasure, according to Fire Chief Keith Jones. Other members of the Department are Loren Peck, Keith Evans, David P. Evans, Gordon South, Henry Bolingbroke, Tommy Thorpe, LaVar Bowen, Frank Thomas and Ren Thomson.

The Malad High student body selected their favorite personalities for the MHS yearbook. Best all-around, Julie Blaisdell, Lynn Bastian; best personality, John Evans, Cindy Smith; best dressed, Mildred Crowther, Brent Bowen; best athletes, Con Alder, Pat Kent; biggest flirt, Verlin Williams, Mary Sue Daniels; most attractive, Margaret Evans, Kelly Edwards; most witty, Stella Byrd, Bill Henrie; nicest smile, Vickie Thompson, Eric Leavitt; most talented, Kim Crowther, Jan Crowther; most likely to succeed, Paul Willie, Jean Thomas; most friendly, Elsie Hubbard, Steve Young; most courteous, Kay Gleed, John Moss.

65 YEARS AGO (1959)

A new business in Malad, Thomas Plumbing and Heating, was opened this week by Frank C. Thomas. Located at 39 Bannock St., the firm will specialize in hot water and steam furnaces in addition to sales and service of all plumbing supplies. Mr. Thomas, licensed by the Idaho Plumbing Board, has been in the plumbing and heating business for the past 25 years and employed by Griff Davis Water Co. for 20 years.

Gordon Griffiths, owner of O.K. Rubber Welders in Malad, has rented the O.K. Shop in Tremonton from Harrison Miller and began operating the Utah firm Monday. Mr. Griffiths will spend part time in Tremonton until April when he will turn the operation of the shop there over to a new manager he is hiring.

Gordon Lewis, a senior at Malad High School, has been commended by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation for his outstanding performance on a nationwide test of educational development, according to Principal J. S. Halliday.

After meeting last week with a Thiokol Corporation Company official in Utah, the Malad Chamber of Commerce has initiated a project to locate rental units in Malad for the company’s employees and also to assist local people to acquire jobs with the firm.

75 YEARS AGO (1949)

The Delta Tau chapter of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity at the University of Idaho has recently established a Clark Memorial Scholarship in memory of Tim and Jack Clark. Tim Clark was a member of the class of 1944. He enlisted in the Naval Air Corps in 1942 and was shot down in one of the raids over Japan. Jack was a member of the class of 1950 and died in a tragic airplane accident near Malad. Both are the only sons of Mr. and Mrs. William D. Clark of Malad.
