On Monday, December 18, the senator representing Oneida County in District 27, Senator Kelly Anthon, visited in Malad City.

During the day, Senator Anthon visited with school officials, including Superintendent Jon Abrams and High School Principal Michael Corbett, Administrator of the Oneida County Library Kathy Kent, and the Malad City Mayor’s Youth Council.

Senator Anthon provided a pizza lunch for the members of the Youth Council. He shared a short bio, indicating that he never had intentions of being involved in local politics. However, he said that he realized that we each need to become involved in our communities; and he urged the members of the Youth Council to become involved now and stay involved in their school and community. He shared his responsibilities as a State Senator and explained the process of legislation. The students were able to “grill” Senator Anthon, and they showed him their Council Closet and the reason for creating the Closet, which is to provide help for students at Malad High School and Malad Middle School. The Youth Council is working in conjunction with the Oneida Crisis Center as a satellite office to provide for those in need.

Currently a winter clothing and blanket drive is being held. These items will be added to the food items in the closet for use of any student at either the high school or the middle school. The use of the closet by a student will be confidential, and only an inventory will be kept so the council can keep items stocked. If anyone would like to donate to the Council Closet, please contact Mayor Joan Hawkins.
