65 YEARS AGO (1959) Shown above are the returning lettermen on the Malad High School 1958 Fifth District championship wrestling team. 5 YEARS AGO (2019)

Four wise men were chosen to predict the future for Oneida County for 2019. Those chosen are Commissioner-elect Bill Lewis, Oneida School District Superintendent Dr. rich Moore, Malad High School Student Body President Drayker Shulz and Malad City businessman and volunteer fireman Geoff Green.

The following are three predictions of each of the wise men.

Commissioner-elect Bill Lewis:

1.  Citizens of Oneida County will continue to be generous in volunteering and giving to those in need

2.  The City of Malad will add a stoplight as more drivers (young and old) take to the road.

3.  Someone will get a clear photograph of Big Foot in Oneida County to prove his existence.

Oneida School District Superintendent Dr. Rich Moore:

1.  The ISAT scores for all our schools will increase over last year.

2.  The Malad High School varsity football team will have a very successful and winning season.

3.  We will have an above normal rainfall in April.

MHS Student Body President Drayker Shulz:

1.  Malad Football will have a better year than the 2018 season.

2.  A new business will move into Malad.

3.  The Saints will win the Super Bowl.

Malad City Businessman and Volunteer Fireman Geoff Green:

1.  I predict that the New Orleans Saints will win the Super Bowl, sorry Ram fans and that my Rockies will make it past the first round of the playoffs.

2.  I predict the the Malad Fire Department will not lose a single car frame on any of the freeway fires they get called to and they will put on the best firework show the county has ever seen.

3.  I predict that a local resident will win at least a $100,000 jackpot on the lottery. I also predict Joan and Kris won't ask for my predictions next year!

10 YEARS AGO (2014)

Malad’s first baby of 2013, Megan Jann Moss, will soon be relinquishing her title to the 2014 first baby born to Oneida County residents.

Performing at the Presbyterian Church Christmas concerts were the following: Scott Treasure, Ernest Palmer, Michelle Detwiler, Jason Detwiler, Annah Detwiler, Seth Rogers, Josiah Detwiler and Stephen Craig Puterbaugh.

The modern library we have now has come a long way since the first library, incorporated as the Malad Public Library Association on December 26, 2014. That library was housed in a small room on the second floor of the Co-op building with Miss Elizabeth McDougle, a schoolteacher, serving as part-time librarian.

The Malad Elementary Christmas Performance for 2013 was a break from tradition for the students at Malad Elementary. This year, for their performance, the students presented a musical title “Emma’s Gift.”

The Malad High School Dragons finished in third place in the Malad Invitational Wrestling Tournament. Sixteen teams competed. The tournament was held at Malad High School on December 20 and 21.

The Malad High School Junior Varsity and C boys’ basketball teams earned wins against American Falls in Malad on December 18. The JV Team also defeated Firth on December 21. The JV team is undefeated.

15 YEARS AGO (2009)

Ray Davis was named 2008 Fireman of the Year during the Malad Volunteer Firemen’s annual banquet held on December 20, prior to the annual Firemen’s Ball. The annual award is voted on by the Firemen. Last year’s recipient and this year’s Fire Chief Geoff Green made the presentation.

The Rick Griffiths home was awarded first place honors in the 2008 Christmas Lighting Contest sponsored by the Malad Chamber of Commerce. Second place went to Farrel and Eileen Williams, and third place to Jim and Doreen Mansfield.  The “Spirit of Christmas’ commercial winner was given to Ireland Bank. 

The Seventh Grade Boys’ Basketball team, coached by Clair Neal and Dean Larkin, claimed the top prize at the Malad Jam for the third year in a row. This year’s team included: Brody Hubbard, Brett Hansen, Zack Jeppsen, Joshua Jensen, Jason Jensen, Nishon Neal and Tanner Lewis.

25 YEARS AGO (1999)

Aspen Jade Chelette entered the world at 4:15 a.m. Friday, January 1, to become the first baby born at the Oneida County Hospital in 1999. 

Torrey Christophersen was among those graduating from the Class of Session #214 in the Division of Wildlife Resources, Utah Law Enforcement P.O.S.T. Academy. 

The eighth Grade Girls’ Volleyball team finished their season last week. Players on the eighth grade team were Jessica Ward, Bobbilyn Wangsgard, Brandi Meler, Dori Coburn, Kelli Weight, Kimberly Williams, Meagan Rose, Brin Curtis and Aliana Price.

Malad Wrestlers who placed in last weekend’s New Plymouth Tournament and pictured in The Idaho Enterprise are Kevin Rice, Jeremy Rindlisbacher, Chris Glascock, Loren Ward, Seth Nielsen, Rusty Jones, Clayton Christensen, Kade Price, Nathan Kent, Blake Davis, Brandon Talbot, Skyler Edwards, Devin Morrison, Trent Buehler, Sonny Blaisdell, Platt Price, Dusty Edwards and Garrett Hess.

30 YEARS AGO (1994)

A St. Anthony man who stopped to help a motorist near Malad was stabbed and robbed Sunday night. The man stopped about six miles north of Malad along the southbound lane of I-15 to help a motorist who appeared to be stranded.

The Extension Master Gardener Volunteer program is an intensive training in all phases of gardening, insect control, and basic horticulture, taught by Extension specialists and agents. 

Firth’s slow-down strategy didn’t work to stop the Dragons when the two teams met on the Malad court. While a pressure of a more unfamiliar nature, the Dragons kept their composure and didn’t give in to the cougars’ attempts to frustrate them. In the end it paid off for a nine-point victory.

Ralph David Bennett has been called to serve a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Spain Madrid area. He will enter the Mission Training center on January 26.

45 YEARS AGO (1979)

A lot of changes are always made with the beginning of each New Year – and so it was at the Deep Creek Inn as Terry and Paula Morby took over ownership duties from Jim and Cindy Hill.

The New Year began on a sour note for Elton Ashton as burglars made their get-away with more than $7,000 in cash and checks during early morning hours of January 1.

For the second time in a little over a month, a home was destroyed by flames in western Oneida this week. Merle Neal was thawing frozen water pipes in the crawl space at his home in Stone, when he left the blowtorch ignited and left to finish his farm chores. Little was salvaged from the home, which was a total loss.

Mush! At least that’s what they always said to their dog teams in those old Mountie movies! But Oneida dog sledder; Gary Jacobsen reports that more common terminology is ‘gee’ and ‘haw’ when commanding the multi dog teams. Unique to the valley, Jacobson breeds and trains his own dogs for sled racing throughout the intermountain area. He is now gearing up for competition at Big Sky, Montana this weekend.

55 YEARS AGO (1969)

Pvt. Reed Facer, Ft. Ord, California spent an 18-day holiday leave here with his wife and with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Francis Facer. He will leave on January 2.

Little red-haired Bonnie Anne Davis will relinquish her “First Baby” title shortly. The brown-eyed Miss is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gary Davis and won a host of prizes for herself and her parents in last year’s first baby contest. To date, seven boys and five girls have won first baby titles.

Now showing the power expected of them in pre-season speculation, the Malad High School Dragons won a pair of games Friday and Saturday to capture the Jerome Holiday Basketball Tournament.

65 YEARS AGO (1959)

Modernization of the 73-year-old LDS stone chapel at Cherry Creek is nearly completed. The historic landmark, built of native stone hand hewn from the hills east of the chapel, was built in 1885. John Davis Jones was bishop of the ward at that time. Over $12,000 in volunteer labor has been given by members of the ward. 

The new manse, being constructed near the Presbyterian Church is expected to be completed in the spring. The building will have three bedrooms, bath, kitchen and living room on the first floor. On the lower level, a study, TV room, bath and utility room will be finished.

Miss Linda Dives was elected Miss MIA and Don Conley, Mr. MIA, at the girls’ choice dance on Saturday evening. Other candidates, nominated by students at the high school, were Carol Ward, Marilyn E. Williams, Kathy Jensen, Kathleen Jones, Sondra Williams, Dixie Williams, Ronnie Harris, Delmar Williams, Brent Smith, Brent Bastian, Brent Thorpe, Norman Marble and Wayne Budge.

75 YEARS AGO (1949)

The homes of B. B. Jones, Wilford Gleed and Charles Nielsen were named as first, second and third place winners, respectively, in the Christmas decorating contest conducted by the Malad Junior Chamber of Commerce. Honorable mention went to Hubert Gleed, Lyle Tapper, Mrs. Jedd Jones, Jr., H. W. Thomas and David Swartz. 

A 21-degree below zero temperature mark was recorded at the Malad airport Wednesday morning for the lowest of the season for Malad valley, and the highest recorded during the day was 14 above zero. This morning a low of minus 9 was reported at the airport.

There will be but one new official to take the oath of office when those elected to administer the affairs of Oneida County are sworn in January 10. He is Jenkin Palmer, Commissioner of District No. 2, who succeeds W.S. Pierce. Other officers re-elected are Khalil Kingsbury, who commences his eighth term as assessor, John A. Evans, who commences his fourth term as sheriff, Mrs. Lurline A. James, who commences her fifth term as treasurer, John W. Clark, who commences his fifth term as county attorney, Bill Fallis, who commences his third term as probate judge, Nephi Lewis, who commences his fourth term as coroner, T. F. Budge, who commences his tenth term as surveyor, Mrs. Phyllis Anderson, who commences her second term as school superintendent.

85 YEARS AGO (1939)

In the annual Christmas home decoration contest, sponsored by the Malad Chamber of Commerce, Malad Lions Club and Western States Utilities Co., Dr. and Mrs. Marion J. Kerns won first place. Other awards were second place, Mr. and Mrs. William D. Clark; third place, Mr. and Mrs. Lyle G. Tapper; fourth place, Mr. and Mrs. Jedd Jones; fifth place, Mr. and Mrs. H. L. Herbert; sixth place, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas D. Evans; seventh place, Mr. and Mrs. William H. Richards, Jr.
