Girls Wrestling Tournament

By: Bella McCullough

This weekend from December 8th-9th the girls wrestling team had a tournament at Marsh Valley. There were many teams competing from in our district as well as out, the girls wrestled in the Marsh Valley Middle School while the JV and Varsity Boys had their tournament in the Marsh Valley High School and their center building. All of the girls did amazing in all their matches and learned great lessons from each and every one of them. Everyone was busy even when it wasn’t their match, watching others wrestling matches as a hawk watches its prey, studying other peoples moves and their ways of wrestling. One of our girls, Aubrey Shulz, almost went undefeated going into the first place round, but after fighting hard and trying her best, she was pinned. Everyone got at least one win each day and did great overall. We are looking forward to our next tournament, which will be December 15th-16th at Ririe, come and support!

Blackfoot Cheer Competition

By: Rebecca McCracken

On Saturday, December 9th, the Malad High School cheerleaders competed in their first competition of the year. At Blackfoot High School's ‘Stampede Showdown’ our MHS cheerleaders took third place in the 2A division pom. “We gave it our best for what we had. We endured tough last-minute changes, but we gave Blackfoot everything we had and came out successful.” Taylor Cowdin, a sophomore cheerleader, stated. Sophomore cheerleader Isabella Bowen added, “We did great, considering our circumstances. Our team is tiny this year, which puts us at a disadvantage against teams with twenty girls or more. We may be tiny, but we are mighty.” The cheerleaders will perform their pom routine during halftimes at Malads girls' and boys' basketball home games, and the annual Drill Team Christmas Show.

FCCLA Fall Conference

By: Aubree Palmer, Tylee Wright

Wednesday, November 1st, the exciting collaboration of each FCCLA chapter in District Five of Idaho rallied together to access leadership skills, general FCCLA knowledge, and presentation skills for events within FCCLA. Led by District President Aubree Palmer from Malad, the opening session went off without a hitch. As each of the chapters filed in with their seventy members in all, Aubree greeted each with materials for the day. These were known as their passports, boarding passes, and carry-ons regarding the theme, “The Ultimate Journey.” With the uplifting speech about success and perseverance, Raegan Yamauchi, Miss Idaho 2023, delighted all members who attended. After the opening ceremony, attendees were split into workshop groups where they worked on service projects for the Salvation Army, preparing for their star events, and Just Dance. After lunch, the workshops were Careers in FCS, FCCLA Trivia, and Presenting Skills. Each workshop was led by a District officer, including Aubree Palmer with Presenting Skills. The highly awarded officer shared her success tactics that led her to achieve Top Gold in every event she has competed in, the highest score in Idaho, and Gold at the National Leadership Conference. All in all, each member loved the conference. A member remarked, “I loved the conference! I think Aubree and the other officers worked so hard to make it an enjoyable experience and succeeded!”

Boys Wrestling Tournament at Marsh Valley

By: Sydnee Sorensen and

Karlee Palmer

The boy's wrestling tournament was held on Friday the eighth and Saturday the ninth, in Marsh Valley. The overall feeling gathered from the boy's wrestling team members after being interviewed was that the tournament went significantly well. Their attitude has a great deal to do with the overall idea from everyone before their matches being play well and don’t get pinned. Most of the boys had 7 matches between the two day tournament and wrestlers like Drake Morrison went undefeated in all their matches along with other wrestlers that went undefeated as well. Calem Mathews said that he had good matches and went against a Pocatello wrestler that broke his nose last year and won against him. Over all the wrestling team is doing very well and wining the majority of their matches. As a senior wrestler and the team captain Hunter Wray has had a good experience as being the team captain, which entails leading warm ups, making sure everyone is where they need to be at the time they need to be there, among other responsibilities. He feel he has been successful in his wrestling matches and stays determined during matches as well as getting focust before the match starts. Overall our wrestling team is doing a great job and succeeding in so many ways.
