Looking Back

60 YEAR AGO (1963) On Thursday, Nov. 21, the annual FFA Mechanics contest was held at Marsh Valley High School for the Eastern Idaho District. Each team consisted of three FFA members. The skills included: arc welding, acetylene welding, rafter cutting, tool sharpening, soldering, and tool identification. Malad placed 1st, Marsh Valley, 2nd, and Montpelier, 3rd. Chapters in the District include Fielding, Montpelier, Bancroft, Preston, West Side, Marsh Valley, Grace and Malad. Members of the Malad team (shown above) included Kenneth Smith, David Hill, and Randy Isaacson.

5 YEARS AGO (2018)

It was a bit chilly, but spirits were warm during the Second Annual Spirit of Christmas Light Parade held Saturday evening. It was followed by a community hot chocolate social at the Fire Station, then topped off by a fireworks display.

There were 20 entries in the parade, and a large crowd attended the social.

Fire Chief Donny Hunt expressed thanks to all those who helped make the event happen, and hoped everyone enjoyed the event.

Old Monte Thomas is turning 90! His family are looking forward to celebrating Monte's birthday. 

Monte was born December 8, 1928 and had three siblings. He served in the Navy during WWll. Once he was home, he married Maureen Camp in 1948. Together he and Maureen had three children: Annette, Max and Mark. Maureen passed in 1992. Monte married Lajuana Atkinson and the two of them spent time traveling to visit their relatives and taking cruised with friends. After Lajuana passed, Monte continues to travel and enjoy time with family.

Monte loves to fish and is an avid fisherman to this day. He also enjoys the company of his friends at "break" and loves to visit family. He is a very special man and is loved by all those who have the privilege to call him father, grandfather, great-grandpa, cousin and friend.

This year at Malad High School, 8th grade students are able to participate in hand-on learning activities in Medical, Agriculture, Technology and Family & Consumer Sciences, as well as participate in some career planning and soft skills training to help them make better decisions when they register for high school coursed and develop their learning plan.

A grant in the amount of $1000.00 was received from the U.S. Bank Foundation to help purchase supplies and equipment for these exploratory programs.

10 YEARS AGO (2013)

Eleven lucky residents won Thanksgiving turkeys in the “Gobblin It Up” contest held by The Idaho Enterprise. Senior Favorites were announced last week at Malad High School. Mr. and Miss Mirror are Josh Jensen and Ashlee Davis; Biggest Flirt, Nishon Neal and Shelby Udy; Best Eyes, Brett Hansen and McKenna Richardson; Most Changed, Ilan Anderson and Charlotte Allen; Most Athletic, Brody Hubbard and Brooke Sorensen; Most Spirit, Carson McClain and Bryce Gibbs; Most Attractive, K.C. Snyder and Sierra Detwiler; Funniest, Brooks Bowman and Olivia Sands; Most Successful, Jacob Tubbs and Bryn Haycock; Best Dressed, Zack Jeppsen and Brooke Daniels, Most Creative/Artistic, Tanner Lewis and Nicole Lamb; Best Smile, Eli Curtis and Randi Garamendi; Most Mischievous, David Jones and Shalae Moss; Best Hair, Emmanuel Nunez and Brooklyn Coburn; Most Polite, Jayse Garrett and Dani Briggs; Most Buff, Jason Jensen and Natalie Anderson and Most Musical/Talented, Josh Leneghen and Kyley Thorpe.

15 YEARS AGO (2008)

Pictured in The Idaho Enterprise are school Board members Sherrie Johnson, Kathleen Atkinson and Lisa Willie as they were honored with Boardmanship Awards during the awards ceremony at the Idaho School Board Association’s annual convention.

The Wolf and Bear Cubs of pack 475 and their leaders, Stephanie Briggs and Shenell Clark, visited the Oneida County Landfill. Scouts in Pack 475 made posters to explain the hazards of pollution. The posters are displayed throughout the community. Members of the pack pictured in The Idaho Enterprise are Cody Weeks, Justin Hubbard, Cree Sweeten, Karson Thorpe, Devin Wilson and Tyson Timothy.

Pictured in The Idaho Enterprise are the MHS Dragonettes. They earned a superior rating at the Western State Competition. They are: Rachel Kent, Taleesha Willie, Shayla Winder, Hope Murray, Kayla Thomas, Paige Moeller and Beth Blaisdell.

25 YEARS AGO (1998)

H. Ward Thomas will be retiring from service as Malad City Treasurer. Thomas, who is 85 years old, took the position in October 1940. Malad wasn’t even considered a city, at the time, but was known as the Village of Malad City. In May of 1941, Malad was given the distinction of becoming a city of the second class. Thomas has served for 58 years as Malad City Treasurer, serving under 11 different Mayors.

Santa was at the Oneida Quilting Guild’s meeting last week to check out 15 quilts the Guild has made for his December 25 deliveries. Pictured in The Idaho Enterprise are Leora Brown, Charlene Olorenshaw, Marie Gleed, Holly Tanner, Janice Egbert, Judy Jones, Joy Cornia, Glenna Illum, Martha Maag, Jean Showell, Ione Latour and Melba Deschamps.

There were two graduates from Malad High School who received national recognition at the 71st Annual National Future Farmers of America (FFA) convention. Trisstan Asay and Melanie Burrie both received their American Farmer Degree. They were among 447,880 recipients from around the country this year.

35 YEARS AGO (1988)

A dream of eight years became a reality when the “Welcome To Malad” sign was hoisted onto four steel poles two miles south of Malad. It now sits majestically on its permanent resting spot east of Interstate 15, henceforth to dutifully welcome I-15 travelers to the City of Malad.

Deron Scott was one of twelve candidates from the state of Idaho to receive the Future Farmer of America’ American Farmer Degree in Kansas City, Missouri. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Kent Scott.

Athena Boel was the lucky winner of the Oneida Quilting Guild’s centennial Quilt. Club president, Janice Egbert, made announcement.

Taking top honors in the Spelling Bee at the Malad Elementary were William Pyke, 2nd Grade; Chris Hess, 3rd Grade; Andrew Hyder and Catherine Ward, 4th Grade; Joey Conley, 5th Grade; and Tyra Burnett, 6th Grade.

Honored as “Friends of Education” at Malad Elementary were past PTO Presidents: Karen Hyer, Peggy Schwartz, Pam Broberg, Tammy Williams, LaReta Gugelman, Jan Gunnell and current president, Davi Christensen.

45 YEARS AGO (1978)

A group of four Oneida candidates who were narrowly defeated in the recent election, mailed a petition to the state attorney general for recount of the three precincts included in the Malad City area. David L. Evans (D), Edna Palmer (R), William Keith John (D), and Rula Thomas (R) filed the joint application for recount.

Santa Claus notified Chamber of Commerce officials this week that he will make his pre-Christmas appearance in Malad on December 15, to greet all children and hear their requests for yuletide gifts.

Visitors to the new Malad Industrial Park will now receive the ‘red carpet’ treatment when they cross the railroad tracks at the park’s main entrance as Union Pacific crews completed installation last week of a red structural foam road grade crossing donated by Oneida Manufacturing plastic plant).

This year’s Thanksgiving was a much more abundant one for three Oneida families as Hazel Ezell and Ruth Thomas teamed up to ready supplies for holiday feasts last week. A Malad Aerie 2042 Eagles Auxiliary project, the three families were treated to traditional Thanksgiving turkey dinners including all the sumptuous trimmings. Mrs. Thomas stated that originally only one box of Thanksgiving treats was to be prepared, but the project ‘snowballed’ into triple feasts with food donated by Auxiliary members.

55 YEARS AGO (1968)

“The Look of Love” sung by Steve Young, was the theme of the annual Senor Ball held in the Stake Building on November 27. The music for the formal dance was furnished by the Star Lighters from Ogden. Elected to reign, as Mr. Senior and Miss Seniorette were Kim Crowther and Mildred Crowther. Selected as first attendants were Kay Gleed and Verlin Williams and second attendants were Julie Blaisdell and Steve Young. 

George Neal, winner of the Regional Grassman title and runner-up for state honors, will be honored at the business meeting of the Malad Chamber of Commerce on November 29.

A series of benefits are being arranged by the “M” Club at Malad High School to help defray hospital expenses for Gary Hansen who was injured in the first play of the Bear River – Malad game on September 24. The femur bone was broken just above the right knee. A benefit basketball game between the Harlem Showboats All Stars and a local team is scheduled for December 6. Members of the Malad team will be Steve Quinney, Wayne Budge, Albert Ekstrom, Jerry Esplin, Brent Winward, David Shoel, Kent Scott, Gary Allen, Craig Daniels and Jerry Bush.

60 YEARS AGO (1963)

A formal memorial to the beloved President of the United States, John F. Kennedy was a 21-gun salute fired by the color guard of the Ernest W. Jones Post of the American Legion at the Malad Cemetery where the U.S. Flag flew at half mast over the graves of men like President Kennedy who had served their nation during wartime. 

70 YEARS AGO (1953)

Duane Jensen was taken to Salt Lake City Monday by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Royal B. Jensen. He left that evening for South Africa to fulfill an L.D.S. Mission. 

Shirley South, Malad, a student of Utah State Agricultural College, will become a member of Lambda Delta Sigma in initiation ceremonies in December. Miss South is a freshman secretarial science major.

State Highway Engineer, E. V. Miller said that over one hundred and fifteen thousand heavy axle loads have been applied by November first to the test pavements at the WASHO road test near Highway 191 south of Malad, according to he Highway Research Board. The WASHO Road Test is being conducted by the Highway Research Board for 11 western state highway departments, the Bureau of Public Roads, truck and trailer manufacturers and certain petroleum companies, all of whom have contributed funds, equipment, personnel or supplies to make the test possible.

75 YEARS AGO (1948)

Gravesite services for Pvt. Calvin A. Noble who was killed in Italy, October 10, 1944, were held at the St. John Cemetery. Pvt. Noble entered the U.S. Army December 2, 1943 and received his basic training at Camp Shelby, Mississippi. He left for overseas in July of 1944 and reached Italy in August. After being reported missing, his parents were later notified by the War Department that he was killed by enemy action on October 10.

The Malad Dragons basketball squad will open the current season against the Bear River Bears in Malad. Comprising the “A” squad are Sam Clark, Neil Griffiths, Gene Caldwell, Bob Harrison, Darrell Harding, J. Guy Gleed, DeVerl Mills, Ray Lewis, Kenneth Wharton, Gary Daniels, John D. Tovey, Larry Kent and Dale Daniels. 

Mr. and Mrs. Ruel Ipsen of Pleasantivew announce the engagement of their daughter Carol to Mr. Don Eliason, son of Mr. and Mrs. Chester Eliason of Holbrook. They are both graduates of the Malad High School class of 1947. Carol attended the U.S.C. at Logan last year. At present she is a secretary at the high school in Malad.

85 YEARS AGO (1938) 

Andrew Hill, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Hill of St. John, was instantly killed Monday morning at his home when his double-barreled shot gun accidently discharged. Mr. Hill is survived by his parents, his widow, two children and brothers and sisters. 

H.M. Matthews of Boise and Pearl Bates of Idaho Falls were arrested by Sheriff Al Josephson and City Officer, William Thomas, Saturday evening on a charge of larceny. An employee at Evans Co-op caught Matthews in the act of taking some gloves. Later when the same officers searched the car Matthews was driving, they found several men’s suits and ladies’ dresses, two new radios, about 70 pairs of ladies hose and a fur coat which was identified as one stolen from the Carrie Adams shop on the evening of November 12.
