5th District Honor Music

By: Paisley Smith and Adi Schow

Last Tuesday, November 7th, a selective number of students from our music program traveled to Marsh Valley for the District Five Honors Music Festival. They were sorted into Choir and Band groups in which they learned new music and got to know new people from other schools in District Five. Our students had previously received the music of three pieces they would perform. The day of the festival, they were combined with all of the schools and practiced all day.

A senior member of the band, Curtis Huckaby, said, “My favorite part was the performance. I liked Air For Band because it was pretty. The conductor was a college professor so he was very qualified.” Throughout the day, all of the students learned many new things and met new people. Another senior band member, Addler Garrett, said, “Everyone was a lot more comfortable this year. It was interesting  how prepared our band was compared to the other schools. I’m going to miss all of the people when I graduate.”

The choir learned three new songs and performed them later that evening. With only one prior practice, the Malad members of the honor choir had some knowledge of the difficulty of the songs. Along with the new songs, the choir was also led by a new conductor from Highland High School. Aubree Palmer stated that, “He was refreshingly enthusiastic…he helped me learn a lot about how conductors lead according to how they want the piece to be sung.” Adi Schow, another member of the Honor Choir mentioned, “I really liked the unity of everyone. We all loved to sing, and everyone got along.”

The concert was attended by many people from multiple schools. Despite only knowing the songs and people for a short amount of time, it went extremely well. Our students learned a lot and had a great time.

Cross Country

By: Cally Coleman

Our teammate, Jenna, shared this quote with us before we ran state. “The race always hurts, expect it to hurt. You don’t train so it doesn’t hurt. You train so you can tolerate it.” - Fitnesschat.com Congratulations Malad Cross Country team at State in Pocatello! Your hard work has paid off. Coach Talbot said” I am so proud of our teams! All the hard work and summer miles paid off! Bringing home two trophies was pretty awesome. Many athletes were able to set team and individual goals ultimately qualifying for state. I think pushing and encouraging athletes to try their best while fighting through injuries and finding a desire to still work hard is the key.”  We had three athletes medal which were Cally Coleman in 6th place, Brooke Issacson in 13th, and Brycen Talbot in 12th. The women’s team placed 3rd as a team bringing home a trophy. The athletes included Cally Coleman in 6th place with a time of 20:03 (SR) , Brooke Issacson in 13th place with a time of 20:47, Brynlee Bastian with a time of 22:03 (SR) , Hadlee Summers with a time of 22:30, KayLee Nalder with a time of 22:55 (SR) , Jenna Talbot with a time of 23:32 (PR), and Oaklie Hebdon with a time of 23:39. The men’s team placed 4th as a team bringing home a trophy also. The athletes included Brycen Talbot in 12th place with a time of 17:33, Boston Burbidge with a time of 18:02 (PR), Braun Nalder with a time of 18:03, Levi Angell with a time of 18:05, Porter Allen with a time of 18:28, Colt Coleman with a time of 18:54 and Brex Martinsen with a time of 20:08. It’s been 21 years since both teams have qualified for state, a huge accomplishment. We are sad to let go of six senior runners. We are grateful for the experiences and fun memories we had together this season with our running family! We thank our coaches Tylee Skinner and Tia Talbot for their dedication and hard work and the parents and grandparents for always supporting us! Until next year…..
