Looking Back

60 YEARS AGO (1963) Calling attention to American Education Week now being observed and stressing that our schools are the concern of every citizen are Robert Waldron, president of the Oneida Education Association; Lauraine Allen, president of the Malad Parent-Teachers' Association, and Donald Vaughan, chairman. of the Oneida School Board.

5 YEARS AGO (2018)

Master Sergeant Christy M. Treasure, United States Air Force, received the Defense Meritorious Service Medal on November 9, 2018. The award was announced by the direction of the Secretary of Defense, under the provisions of Department of Defense.

A member of the United States Air Force for 19 years, Christy is presently serving at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado, working with the cadets on cyber security. The citation was received at Buckley Air Force Base in Aurora, Colorado. MSgt. Treasure is formerly of Malad City, Idaho, the daughter of Steve and Linda Treasure and the granddaughter of Neal and Marie Reeder and Roxie and the late Bob Treasure, all of Malad.

The Malad High School football team had five players named to positions on the 2A Fifth District All-Conference team, announced last week. The team is selected by the coaches of the 2A Fifth District.

Named to the first team defense is senior linebacker Drayker Shulz. Shulz was also named to the second team offensive team as one of the running backs. Junior wide receiver Trevor Howe also earned first team honors.

Second team honors went to senior Dylan Hunt on the Offense as a tight end. Senior Carson Tavoian was named to the second team defense as a defensive end.

Also recognized, as an honorable mention was Malad's sophomore quarterback Tom Simpson.

The Oneida Soil & Water Conservation District held Conservation Days at Malad Elementary where the Kindergarten and second through fifth grades enjoyed learning about watersheds. The theme for Conservation Days was "Watershed – Our Water, Our Home".

In conjunction with Conservation Days and following the above theme, three children were chosen as poster contest winners – first place, Jenetta Jacaway; second place, Tabitha Webster and third place, Adilyn Schow. Winner of the speed contest was Savanna Young.

10 YEARS AGO (2013)

Pictured in The Idaho Enterprise, Royce Jones salutes the flag during the Coast Guard Branch Song during the Veterans’ Day program. Also pictured is Gene Caldwell representing the Army, Russell Wilson representing the Navy, Earl Gillies representing the Air Force and Russell South representing the Marines.  The program this year was titled “Let Freedom Sing” with the Malad Elementary 4th grade students.

Malad High School Music director Ralph Bennett was named the “5th District Music Director of the Year” at the group concert performed at the conclusion of the music clinic. The clinic was held at Aberdeen High School on November 6.

15 YEARS AGO (2008)

The Veterans of Oneida County were honored on Tuesday, November 11, by the Fourth Grade students at Malad Elementary as they presented their annual Veteran’s Day Assembly. Special tributes were given by Frank Madsen for his brother Eric (Rick) Madsen; Julie Bastian for her father, the late Theron Blaisdell; JoDel Harrod for her stepfather, the late Bob Potts and Marsha Schwartz to her father, the late Rex Evans.

The Malad High School Chapter of the FFA had 14 students attend the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana. The group included Elsie Thomas, Stephanie Keller, Karissa Barnes, Shanlynn Briggs, Clint Thomas, Devin Skidmore, Ty Johnson, Paige Daniels, Nathan Eliason, Tallen Boyer, Kelly Daniels, Tasen Jones, Jeremy Jensen and Tyler Ogden.

25 YEARS AGO (1998)

Most New Canyon property owners attending a Monday night meeting with Oneida County Commissioners agreed to participate in the cost of a new road dugway approach to the rural development area. 

Jacob D. Stokes, son of Lynn and Valorie Stokes of Malad, has joined the 419th Medical Squadron, a part of the Air Force Reserve’s 419th Fighter Wing stationed at Hill Air Force Base (AFB), Utah, as a laboratory technician.

Former Malad resident, Cheryl Madson, is the newly elected Assessor for Weber County, in Ogden, Utah. She will take over her duties January 1, 1999. Cheryl is the daughter of Donna Vanderwood and the late Howard Vanderwood. She is married to former resident, Mike Madson, son of the late James and Idonna Madson, of Malad.

Steve Stocks is the newest member of the Oneida County Sheriff’s Department, working as a patrol deputy. 

Pictured in The Idaho Enterprise, Robert Hannah gives a little extra attention to a pig at Malad Elementary on November 6. Mr. Hannah kissed the pig after the students reached their goal of earning 5,000 accelerated reader points so far this year. 

35 YEARS AGO (1988)

Veterans’ Day – To most Americans it means little more than a day the mail isn’t delivered. And yet to those who have served – the ones who have put their lives on the line, or maybe even gave their lives – it’s their day. Highlighted in this Veterans Day edition, Dennis Thomas, Vietnam Veteran, Ralph Jones, Con Alder and Dan Williams, World War II Veterans, and Milton Jones, who served in World War I, their experiences live deep in their minds. It’s a day for Veterans to remember, and to be remembered. 

Pictured in The Idaho Enterprise, Jenny Hawkins gets in the swing of things as she tries to persuade voters to vote for her in carcasses held at the Malad Elementary. The student elections, designed to be a learning experience for fifth and sixth graders, were conducted on November 8.

45 YEARS AGO (1978)

Oneida County Commissioners look over tally sheets from the 2nd Precinct Monday following a re-canvass by election workers, which uncovered an error in tabulation in the county clerk’s race. Two votes were added to Joyce Freidenberger’s (D) total, overturning the unofficial win by Rula Thomas (R). Four candidates are expected to file for recount within the next one and one half weeks.   

Pictured in The Idaho Enterprise, Darin Daniels, sight-impaired Malad Junior High School student completes a science test with the aid of a ‘visual tech’ machine located in the secondary resource room at the Malad School. The video enlarger magnifies print from Darin’s text and work books from 10 to 60 times and projects the image onto the TV-type screen so script can be read more easily. The visual tech was provided by the state organization for the blind and partially sighted at no cost to the school district. When the machine is no longer needed here, it will be transferred for use at another school district. The enlarger is just one of the many special services available through the resource room.

55 YEARS AGO (1968)

With 160 in attendance, Oneida County Veterans of World War I were honored at a Veterans’ Day banquet Monday evening marking the 50th anniversary of the end of WWI. In paying tribute to the WWI veterans, the American Legion presented memorial key chains to Oneida’s ex-servicemen including the following: Lee Morgan, Joe J. Colton, Gene Dalton, LeRoy Davis, Walter Davis, Lee Ekstrom, Sid Folland, Stillman Harris, McKinley Jenkins, Henry T. Jones, Rollie Jones, Thomas V. Jones, Warren Jones, William J. Jones Dalam Kent, Miles Larsen, Sam Lusk, Thomas H. Lloyd, Orson H. Mabey, Wilford Parry, Don L. Peck, J. D. Price, Joel A. Smith, Dan Pete Thomas, Robert L. Thomas, Charles C. Waldron, Edgar Thorpe, George A. Williams, Jack Ezell, Morgan W. Tovey, Lawrence Jones, Caleb O. Nibert, D. P. Jones, Cornelius Jones, William D. Clark, Charles Gardner, Milton T. Jones, Lyle G. Tapper, Daniel E. Thomas, Rollin Showell. 

60 YEARS AGO (1963)

The J. N Ireland & Co., Bankers women’s bowling team, consisting of keglers Verna Jones, Jeanne Jenkins, Isabel Jones, Joyce Niefenegger and Ione Jones, placed third in competition at a WIBC sanctioned invitational tourney held at the Tough Guy Lanes in Pocatello during the weekend.

Oneida Education Association, supported by the Malad City Council, the Parent-Teachers Association, American Legion and other groups and individuals desiring an efficient educational system, this week called attention to American Education Week which is being observed November 10th to the 16th with the theme “Education Strengthens The Nation”.

Winners of the various prizes awarded during the Lions Annual Carnival were the following: Lambs, donated by Jones Sheep Co. and Alder Brothers – Jenkin Palmer and Herman Miller, Jr.; shotgun – Fred Goddard; .22 rifle – Dennis Evans; G. E. mixer – Reba Henrie; clock and wallet – Gordon Griffiths; cedar chest with doll – Clair Davis; four quarters of beef – Thelma Evans, LuRae Jones, William Griff Jenkins, Monte Swenson; turkeys donated by AG Fine Foods, Millstream Grocery, Stan’s IGA and Jack’s IGA Oneida Grocery – Pam Schwartz, Melvin Christoffersen, Rickie Bush and Danny Scott. With a gross of over $1,300, the Lions expect to net between $700 and $800 to apply toward retiring the swimming pool debt.

70 YEARS AGO (1953)

The naming of a new Malad Stake presidency and dedication of the Malad Stake-Third Ward building will highlight activities of the LDS quarterly conference scheduled this weekend. Principal speakers at the sessions this weekend will be Elders Spencer W. Kimball and Adam S. Bennion of the Council of Twelve. Word was received this morning that President Steven L. Richard will also attend the conference.

Marion J. Hess, Malad contractor, has been awarded the construction contracts on two dams in Utah. One will be built at Loa, Utah and the other in Escalante.

Mr. and Mrs. Dale Evans announce the engagement of their daughter, Marie, to Bill Neal, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jess Neal of Stone.

The Malad FFA Chapter held its annual Harvest Ball on November 6. Vella Crowther, was chosen 1953 FFA Sweetheart. Her attendants were Joyce Mills and Margaret Jones. Darl Williams was the master of ceremonies.

75 YEARS AGO (1948)

Elbert Sweeten returned home last week after serving as a missionary for the LDS church for two years. His first year was spent in British Columbia, Canada, six months in Roseburg, Oregon and six months in Anchorage, Alaska.

Relatives in Malad have received word that the body of Calvin A. Noble, who was killed in Italy while serving in the U.S. Army, is being returned to the United States. Burial will be in the St. John Cemetery.

Formal opening of the Oneida Farm Equipment Co.’s new $65,000 building will be held on Friday, November 12. The management has invited people of the county to inspect the building during the day and arrangements have been made for entertainment during the afternoon. The new 90x115 structure houses a large display and reception room, offices, parts department and repair department. The company sells International farm equipment, Trac-tractors, refrigeration and deep freeze units and general farm hardware implements.

85 YEARS AGO (1938) 

Mrs. Sarah Williams of Malad was given special honors in a Radio Broadcast over station KSL on Wednesday morning. The occasion was Mrs. Williams ninety- first Birthday. An interesting sketch of Mrs. Williams life was given and tribute paid to her. She was also presented with a beautiful potted fern by the Brown Floral Company.

The first baby born at the new hospital was a son born on November 2 to Mr. and Mrs. James Reed. As yet a name has not been decided upon for this lucky infant. The second child born in the Oneida Hospital was a son born on November 7 to Mr. and Mrs. Windsor Rice of Logan. His name is to be Richard Lynn.
