5 YEARS AGO (2018)

The Oneida County Deputies met for the final quarterly meeting of the year under new leadership. Elected at the meeting held on July 11, 2018 were: President Jerry Thomas, Vice President Wayne Jones, Secretary Rhonda Neal and Treasurer Heidi Hubbard.

President Thomas recognized six men as possible new members: Bill Lewis, Geoff Green, Harry Sherman, Steve Coakley, Bob Christophersen and Garren Atkinson. All were present except Geoff Green who had another commitment. Those who make the decision to join the group will be sworn in at the first quarterly meeting in January 2019.

Tayson Davis had a once in a lifetime hunting season. He drew and harvested on three tags this season.' "Usually when you put in on draw hunts you are hoping to be able to draw for at least on tag." said Tayson Davis, the 15-year-old son of Terry and Shannon Davis. "When I found out that I had three tags this year, I was on cloud nine."

Davis was successful in all of his hunts, scoring a large antelope first, a large bear second and a large elk.

Winners were chosen by judges of this year's chamber of Commerce Costume Contest.

First place was awarded to Nell J. Redfield Memorial Hospital, with a special shout out to the Barbies! Different departments dressed with different themes. the Barbie theme was very creative, as well as the pill bottles!

Second place went to Hess Lumber. They were dressed as Disney characters.

The Small Business Award went to Northern Title for their portrayal of characters in The Nightmare Before Christmas.

10 YEARS AGO (2013)

The annual Festival of Trees will be held on Friday and Saturday, November 8 and 9, at the Malad Senior Citizens’ Center.

Thanksgiving is just around the corner, and to add to the excitement of the holidays, The Idaho Enterprise is sponsoring the annual “Gobblin’ it Up” contest.

Families can now apply with the local SEICAA office for participation in the annual Sub for Santa/Angel Tree and Shop With a Cop programs. These programs are sponsored by the South Eastern Idaho Community Action Agency (SEICAA).

Airman Clint Semrad has been deployed to Afghanistan where he will be stationed at the Bagram Air Force Base with the Air Force 50th Security Forces for six months. Clint has been stationed at Shriever Air Force Base in Colorado Springs for the past year.

The Malad High School Volleyball Team claimed the second place trophy after a hard-fought battle through the 2A Idaho State Volleyball Tournament. Showing off their trophy in The Idaho Enterprise are Bryn Haycock, Byrce Gibbs, Brooke Sorensen, Nicole Lamb, Coach Camie Tripp, Aubrey King, Bailey Hill, Paityn Tripp, Karsyn Willie, Taya Thorpe, Saige Smith, Taber Paskett, Sam Evans, Lindsay Sorensen and Jordan Hawkes. 

15 YEARS AGO (2008)

The Idaho Community Foundation has announced $153,764 in grants for 77 nonprofit organizations or projects in Eastern Idaho. Oneida County was awarded six grants for a total of $11,350. Receiving grants are: The American Legion Post 65, Malad Valley Theater Guild, The Oneida County Library, Curlew Valley Senior Citizens’ Center, Malad Elementary School and the Malad Middle School.

Following the departure of Kyle Tackett from the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), Laren Nalder was recently named District Conservationist at the Malad NRCS Field Office.

Logan Alder and Clayton Eliason were among the recipients of the American FFA degrees, presented at the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis last week.

25 YEARS AGO (1998)

Free balloons, goodies and lots of prize drawings will be on tap this Friday and Saturday when Dano’s Chevron and Burger King hold their Grand Opening. Dan and Jeanne Earl invite everyone to come in and see their new store and sign up for the drawings. 

Carl Isaacson and his granddaughter, Laurie Scheiber (born in Malad) from Phoenix, Arizona, went to watch John Glenn “do it again” on the Discovery 7 Space Shuttle at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Pictured in The Idaho Enterprise, Carl Isaacson shakes hands with Astronaut Wally Schirra in front of a huge map signed by thousands of well wishers for Friendship 7.

Kevin Rice, 15, Malad Sixth Ward, Troop 456 has earned his Eagle Scout Award. A Court of Honor will be held for him in the Malad Sixth Ward. His project was setting up picnic tables and trash containers for public use in an area near the Malad Elementary School. Sid Lewis was his scoutmaster at the time. 

James Neal Reeder, son of Ceylon and Joanie Reeder of Malad, is currently attending Army Basic Training at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. Jim’s next duty station will be Aberdeen Proving Grounds in Maryland, where he will be attending Advance Individual Training (AIT).

Will the real Jared Crowther please step forward! Pictured in The Idaho Enterprise, the staff at Hess Lumber had a bit of Halloween fun when everyone dressed up like the boss. Each wore a nametag with the message, “Hi, I’m Jared. May I help you.” Celebrating are: Carollyn Olachea, Tonya Taylor, Lori Christiansen, Jeanette Hobson and the real Jared Crowther and his wife Ronda.

35 YEARS AGO (1988)

Returning home from spending a week participating in the Idaho Junior Miss Finals in Moscow, Malad’s Junior Miss, Janna Dredge, said, “It’s the best week that I’ve ever had.” The dark eyed beauty represented Oneida County in competition with forty other local winners from throughout the state in the week-long competition. She placed among the top ten and was winner of the Creative and Performing Arts. Theme for this year’s competition was “Remember the Past-Dream For the Future.”

Larell’s Hilltop Service is now Norm’s Hilltop Service and once again open for business. Purchased a month ago, the new owners, Norm and Mary Evans, have spent the interim getting ready to open. Norm, now retired from his job in California, grew up in Malad and says he looks forward to having everyone stop in an renew old acquaintances.

Douglas Marteeny, 17, son of Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Marteeny, was surprised last week when a KPVI, Channel 6, Eyewitness News Team showed up at Malad High School to tape a feature story on him. The senior student was named Malad’s candidate for the station’s fourth annual Leadership Scholarship Award, to be given away May 13 at an awards banquet in Pocatello.

On October 25, Jane Ann Ward, Oneida County Farm Bureau Women’s President, and committee member Dixie Bush, took Esther Jensen to Bear Lake where she competed with five other county winners in the Farm Bureau District Speech Competition. Miss Jensen, winner from Oneida County, was named Senior Division winner and was presented a medallion and an Idaho Centennial Silver Dollar. 

45 YEARS AGO (1978)

For the first time since Idaho gained statehood in 1890, voters elected a governor from Malad this week. John V. Evans topped the unofficial gubernatorial count with 168,241 votes compared to 111,393 for his Republican opponent Allan Larsen. This is Evans’ first election bid for the governor’s post, having stepped into the vacancy left by the appointment of Cecil Andrus as Secretary of the Interior in January 1977.

Rex Schwartz began a remodeling project at A.G. Fine Foods last week – the hard way. The rear wall of Rex’s was rammed by an ice cream delivery truck Friday afternoon pushing in a large section of brick and damaging the interior wall.

Idaho State Patrolman Rex Skinner and Oneida Deputy Bill Neal teamed up to man a ‘traffic lane’ on the St. John road about one mile west of Malad. The officers checked drivers’ licenses and registration for the 27 vehicles passing through the roadblock during its 55-minute set-up. Sheriff Ken Wharton noted that the ‘traffic lane’ is a routing procedure here in Oneida. No violators were listed during the check.

55 YEARS AGO (1968)

Milton Robbins, son of Mr. and Mrs. Merlin Robbins, Stone, was one of eight members of the Idaho Platoon of the U.S. Marines to earn a private first class rating after two months of training. Robbins will be stationed in San Diego for several months to attend an electronics and communications repair school.

Norval Moss, Cadet Master Sergeant, was nominated for “Cadet of the Month” at Brigham Young University, Provo. A son of Mr. and Mrs. Bill Moss, he is a drum major in the Air Force ROTC band.

Specialist 4th Class Dale Robbins left this week for Fairbanks, Alaska after visiting here with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Merlin Robbins. Dale has returned for duty in Vietnam.

Four members of the Malad Chapter of Future Homemakers of America, were honored by being elected officers of the Idaho 5th District FHA. Julie Jones was elected president; Lucille Thomas, vice president; Jacqueline Davis, area project chairman and Marlene Smith, secretary. 

60 YEARS AGO (1963)

Malad unit of the Federal Aviation Agency commemorated the 5th anniversary of the organization by achieving one of its primary objectives – helping an aircraft in distress. Guided to the local field near midnight Thursday when one of its twin engines failed was a C-46 Cargo plane with the pilot and co-pilot aboard and enroute on a flight from Portland, Oregon to Hill Field, Ogden. The craft landed safely and continued on Saturday night after a new engine was installed.

That Malad City and surrounding areas will be one of the Idaho communities selected to be featured in the ninth annual edition of “Idaho Fishing and Hunting Guide” was indicated this week by Ray “Doc” Martin, Boise, well-known outdoorsman and editor of the colorful publication which has shown tremendous growth in both number of copies and pages each year since it was first printed.

Calling attention to the fact that no other governmental department or agency is used by all of the people all of the time on a basis comparable with the Post Office Department, Representative Ralph R. Harding dedicated Malad’s new Post Office building Saturday.

Malad City and Oneida County law enforcement officers this week issued a reminder that the recent bad check law passed by the Idaho Legislature provides stiff penalties for those writing the checks. Any person who writes an insufficient fund check under $25 is guilty of a misdemeanor with possible punishment of up to six months in the county jail and a fine of up to $300.

70 YEARS AGO (1953)

Indication of another good producing well in the Holbrook section was given Wednesday on the Steve Smith farm when water rose to a depth of 15-feet below the surface after a test well had been drilled 154-feet deep. The well is located south and east of the Sweeten well, which is pumping 2,600 gallons per minute.

Jim Goddard, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lee Goddard, and Jim Rutter, son of Mr. and Mrs. William H. Rutter, left Wednesday for Fort Douglas, Utah from where they will be sent to an Army training camp. They were Oneida County’s November selectees.

President S. A. Hendricks of the Malad LDS Stake has been appointed by the First Presidency as the President of the West Central States Mission with headquarters in Billings, Montana. 

Candidates for the 1953 Sweetheart, of the Malad Chapter of Future Farmers of America, are Margaret Jones, Vella Crowther and Joyce Mills. The Sweetheart will be chosen at the FFA’s annual Harvest Ball, Friday evening, November 6.

T/Sgt. Thomas R. Thurber and his wife and four children plan to leave next week for California where Sgt. Thurber will be stationed at Camp Beal, Marysville, California. Sgt. Thurber, who has spent a year in Korea, is spending a 30-day leave with his family in Malad who have been here with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jess Ward, during his absence.

75 YEARS AGO (1948)

The Malad High School Triple Trio announced this week that they are taking the name of “Dragonettes”. The group, which received a first division rating in competition at Pocatello last spring, is directed by Alma Sonne and comprised of the following members: Kay Tovey, Marialice Tovey, Lois Tovey, May Dell Ward, Bunnie Lea Dudley, Lorraine Corbridge, Lucile Corbridge, Florence Ipsen, Jennie Stayner, Accompanist for the vocalists is Irene Atkinson.

Relatives in Malad have received word that the body of Robert Campbell, who was killed in Italy while serving in the U.S. Army, is being returned to the United States. Mr. Campbell entered the Army at Grace, Idaho and was a Malad resident for 10 years. Burial will be in the Malad Cemetery.

The Democrats gain a decisive edge in House and Senate. President Harry S. Truman led in 28 states with 304 electoral votes; he also won the popular vote with 11,031,686.

85 YEARS AGO (1938) 

That there is a possibility of the construction of another reservoir at Samaria with a capacity of 700 acre feet was brought out at a meeting at Samaria Wednesday evening, attended by officials of the Soil Conservation Service, the Bureau of Agricultural economics, the Farm Security Administration, and officials of all of the reservoirs companies of Malad Valley. The proposed dam will be above backwaters of the present one, and the cost is estimated at $25,000.
