45 YEARS AGO (1978) With smiles almost as wide as their jack-o-lanterns, these youngsters displayed prize money following pumpkin judging, Monday. The pumpkin growers are issued seeds in the spring to grow their own crop for the Farm Bureau contest. 5 YEARS AGO (2018)

Malad Elementary participated last week in Digital Citizenship week, a global event encouraging and celebrating responsible use of media and technology, especially online activity.

Digital Citizenship through commonsense.org is a new curriculum at Malad Elementary this year. It is a school-wide effort that is taught according to grade level and reinforced throughout the school year.

According to the website, digital citizens tink critically about what they see online and learn to make their own smart choices online and in life. Digital citizens learn to understand the benefits and risks of sharing information, knowing the difference between a credible news source and a sponsored ad and balancing screen time with other activities.

The Malad High School volleyball team reclaimed the 2A Idaho State Volleyball Championship held at Capital High School, on saturday, October 27. Malad won eveery match during the tournament. This is the third time they have won the championship in five years.

This team includes Britlynn Hubbard, Halli Hannah, Hannah Bird, Ashlynn Brown, Brooklyn Gross, Mia Jones, Jenna Peterson, Ella Ward, Mesa Paskett, Bayla Tripp, Coach Camie Tripp, Jacee Sweeten, Emily Allen and Jordan Brown.

10 YEARS AGO (2013)

The Oneida County Sheriff is asking parents and children of all ages to be vigilant and always have a buddy with them when they are walking or going to and from activities. He is also asking that incidents such as suspicious activities or persons be reported immediately giving law enforcement an opportunity to find the suspects.

Three Malad city residents have tossed their hats into the ring to run for a four-year term on the Malad City Council. The two candidates with the highest number of votes will be declared the winners of the election. Running are Doug Crowther, Malad businessman; Larry Thomas, Malad businessman and currently a member of the council; Joan Hawkins, a Malad resident who is currently a member of the council.

John Williams, CEO of the Nell J. Redfield Memorial Hospital, was inducted into the Deputies as a new member and Jerry Thomas, who was inducted at a previous meeting, received his Deputies badge.

The Lady Dragons fought their way to the 2A Fifth District Championship on Wednesday in Malad after defeating West Side. Team members include Bryn Haycock, Brooke Sorensen, Bryce Gibbs, Nicole Lamb, Rylee Tripp, Taya Thorpe, Lindsay Sorensen, Taber Paskett, Paityn Tripp, Aburey King, Karsyn Willie, Sam Evans, Saige Smith, Jordan Hawkes and Bailey Hill. Camie Tripp is their coach.

15 YEARS AGO (2008)

The thirteen Silent Witness life-sized cutouts seen around Malad City during the month of October commemorated National Domestic Violence Awareness Month and the Oneida County Crisis Center, now in its 10th year of providing services to women, children and men who are victims of domestic violence.

Once again the residents of Oneida County have been generous with their donations to the Boy Scout Food Drive. A total of 4,680 items were collected. All of the food collected during the Boy Scout Drive in the fall and the Postal Food Drive in May stays in Malad for the benefit of the families here in the community.

The Dragons Lair, a family and youth oriented business will soon be opening at 41 North Main (in the old Corner Bar building). Owners, Keith Anderson and Clayton and Alice Anderson will be providing a snack bar, video arcade, billiards, karaoke and other forms of entertainment and recreation to the community. No liquor or smoking will be allowed at the family-friendly facility.

Crystal Beck was awarded first place in the Idaho Council For History Education’s Political Cartoon Contest. Beck earned first place with her cartoon about grocery financing. She received a $500 cash prize for her work.

25 YEARS AGO (1998)

“I Like Me – Drug Free” is the theme of Red Ribbon Week this year at Malad Elementary. Pictured in The Idaho Enterprise and pledging to remain drug free is Malad Elementary students Jared Jones and Kayla Creager. All Oneida students – at Malad Elementary, Stone Elementary, Malad High, and Malad Middle Schools – were given the opportunity to sign pledges during Red Ribbon Week.

A Country Western theme will feature local artists at the annual Oneida County Farm Bureau Banquet on November 5 at the Malad LDS Stake Center. Members will be able to enjoy the combined talents of Country singer, Harry Sherman and young soloist, Jana Davis. The “Boot Scooters” will perform line dancing and JoAnn Ward will be reciting her own brand of humorous cowboy poetry. 

Linda Treasure won the judge’s vote and placed first in the Malad Area Chamber of Commerce Chili Cook-off held on Saturday. Second place honors went to Tracy Black, while Cydney Ipsen and Marie Reeder tied for third place. 

35 YEARS AGO (1988)

Five Oneida County farmers and ranchers have been nominated to be on the Water Conservation District for the next four years. The four candidates are Roy Jenson, John C. Hill, Loyd Briggs, Robert D. Sorensen and Tom Palmer.

The Iron Door is open once again – Now under new management. Judy Goodman and daughter, Shannon Hughes, officially opened the Iron Door on October 25. Featured on the menu will be pizza and lots of delicious bakery items. Plus, Mrs. Goodman plans to be creative with some different homemade soups and sandwiches.

Announcement has been made that Private Steven D. Isaacson, son of Lee and Dee Isaacson has completed Basic Training and Artillery Instructor’s Training in the Army National Guard Reserve at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. 

Farrell Jones was inducted into the “Horse Trainer Hall of Fame” at Santa Ana Race Park in Arcadia, California. “Wild Horse” Jones is a native of Malad, Idaho. He began his career in the racing industry as a jockey in 1935. Farrell is the son of the late Warren and Merle Jones of Malad. Among those attending the ceremony were Farrell’s sisters, Aydene and Dalene, and their husbands, Orem, Utah.

Colorado State University held its inaugural induction into the CSU Sports Hall of Fame recently. One of the inductees, Jim Williams, is a former Malad resident. Williams who coached CSU’s basketball team for 26 years, has won more games than any collegiate basketball coach in Colorado history.

45 YEARS AGO (1978)

Great Pumpkins were picked, marked, cleaned and decorated Monday by Malad Elementary students for the annual Farm Bureau Ladies Pumpkin Contest.

Forty pumpkins made the trip to school for the judging in three divisions. Taking home honors and cash prizes were: Kirk Nielsen, first, decorated; LeAnna Talbot, second, decorated; Dustin Smith, first, carved; Shelly Tubbs, second, carved; Misty Bailey, first, largest; Scott Kimberling, second, largest.

The contest was headed by Lorene Powell aided by Farm Bureau Ladies officers: Marie Higley, Lois Hess, Mitzi Hess, Rolene Gleed and Glenna Illum.

Kevin Naylor, auditor at First Bank and Trust of Idaho, is concluding his duties there in anticipation of a move to Wallace, Idaho next week. Naylor will be employed with H.F. Manguson and Company, an accounting firm.

Primary excavation was completed last week on a new self-serve gas station to be located on 300 East, near the Malad-Interstate 15 interchange. Developer Ron Price is waiting for the go-ahead from his financers before beginning actual construction. He hopes to be completed before the end of the year. Plans call for installation of three 12,000 tanks to feed the eight pumps at the station. The Amoco self-serve will feature regular, lead-free and diesel fuel.

Pictured in The Idaho Enterprise is a photo of a truckload of freshly cut Christmas trees – in October? Traveling south on I-15 just north of Malad last week, the Enterprise photographer encountered the load of evergreens headed for market. It was a grim reminder that even though Halloween is barely over and Thanksgiving is not yet here Christmas is just around the corner!

55 YEARS AGO (1968)

Malad High School’s homecoming royalty, Queen Vickie Thompson, Margaret Evans, first attendant, and Julie Blaisdell, second attendant will ride in the parade and reign at the day’s other activities. MHS Dragons will meet the Aberdeen Tigers in the final game of the season and a dance that evening will conclude the homecoming events.

Soils Contest of the Future Farmers of America, Idaho 5th District, was held at Malad with the Bear Lake team winning first place and Malad second. Malad team members were Dallan Nalder and Wynn Anderson with Mark Ipsen and Reed Howell as alternates. Three Malad boys, Mark Ipsen, Nard Jones and Boyd Clark, were high point men in the contest. 

Lt. Kerry South, who is serving with the Marines in Vietnam, has been assigned to the headquarters group at the First Marine Air Wing Base at Da Nang. Lt. South will be in charge of all gear of the Marine Wing ground unit.

Gordon South has bought the Malad Cabins from C.O. Nibert on South Main Street and plans to open four modern motel units after extensive remodeling and landscaping.

Airman William W. Luedtke, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. R. Luedtke, has completed basic training at Lackland Air Force Base. He has been assigned to the Air Force Technical Training Center at Lowry AFB, Colorado for specialized schooling as a supply specialist. Airman Luedtke is a graduate of Malad High School.


60 YEARS AGO (1963)

A five-mile segment of Interstate Highway 15 miles north of Malad is being opened to traffic October 31, according to Leland D. Jones, resident engineer of the Idaho Department of Highways. Also opened for travel in southeastern Idaho this week is a six-mile stretch of U.S. Highway 30 near Montpelier.

Circling November 22 as nuptial date with Sid Showell, son of Mr. and Mrs. Rollin Showell, Stone, Idaho, is Miss Sharon Price, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dale Price.

Suspense, beauty, a fine orchestra and a delightful mood were all combined at the F.F.A.’s Harvest Ball. Anticipation reigned, as everyone tried to guess who would receive the Sweetheart crown for ’63. Rex Mills announced Donette Neal as the Sweetheart Queen and her attendants, Nancy Thorpe and Sharon Jones. 


Ralph Hadfield this week announced local winners in the Punt, Pass and Kick Competition sponsored by Hadfield’s Inc., Ford Motor Co. and the National Football League. The following Malad school winners received warm-up jackets, football helmets and autographed footballs in all four divisions: 11-year-olds: Randal Hall, 1st; David Gilgen, 2nd, Michael Smith, 3rd; 10-year-olds: Tony J. Evans, 1st; Kelly Ray Kent, 2nd; Jim Watkins, 3rd; 9-year-olds: Lee Hobson, 1st; Larry T. Chivers, 2nd; Kim Allen, 3rd; 8-year-olds: John A. Thomas, 1st; Kenneth D. Moss, 2nd; Ricky M. Evans, 3rd.

70 YEARS AGO (1953)

Graduation exercises for the practical nurses’ training class of the Oneida County Hospital were held Saturday evening at the Malad School auditorium. Graduates included DeLene Bybee, LuRain Conger, Dorothy Evans, Rula Evans, Velma Evans, Edna Jones, Madlyn Jones, JoAnn Lusk, Erma Price, Shirley Thomas and Gaylene Williams. The graduation brought the number of practical nurses in the county to 14 as three others, Isabel Jones, Marie White and Joan Leavitt received certificates in 1947.

While good defensive play kept a larger Rupert team in check, the Malad Dragons put together their best attack of the season and defeated the Magic Valley squad 24 – 13 on the Malad field Friday afternoon. Joe Daniels, always one of Coach AJay Jones’ mainstays in the Dragon line, played another outstanding game as did Terry Conley who turned in an exceptional offensive game and kept Rupert in their own territory most of the time with his excellent kicking.

75 YEARS AGO (1948)

Two men were captured by police officers in Montpelier during an attempted slot machine burglary and later confessed to similar thefts in Malad and Bancroft. The pair were responsible for the theft of two slot machines from the Chat N’ Chew Lounge. 

Among the twenty-three freshman coeds at Utah State, Logan, elected to wear the horizon blue uniforms of the Reserve Officers Training Corps sponsors is Miss Joyce Harding, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Harding.

Elected to reign over the Homecoming events was Miss Helen Rutter, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William H. Rutter. Her attendants were Donna Jones, Carolyn Williams and LuAnna Williams.

85 YEARS AGO (1938) 

Malad High School is urging the people of Oneida County to properly observe Navy Day. In keeping with the custom of former years, October 27, the birthday of the late President Theodore Roosevelt, will be proclaimed by the President and celebrated throughout our county as Navy Day – a special day set apart and devoted to the purpose of focusing public attention upon “Our First Line of Defense.”

The Annual Road Show sponsored by the Malad Stake M.I.A. Boards will be held, October 31 and November 1. Seven wards in the Stake have prepared acts as follows: Portage, “Old King Mutual”; Malad First Ward, “Rich Wife-Poor Wife”; Malad Third, “Going Home”; Pleasantview, “Fifty-Fifty”; Samaria, “The X-Ray Specialist”; and St. John, “March of Time.”
