Football Season Ends; a great year overall

Caleb Mathews and Hunter Wray take down the West Side runner with Dylan Moss behind.

Just as fast as the season began, the Malad Dragon football season has come to a close.  Over nine games the team tallied up thousands of offensive yards, hundreds of tackles, dozens of plays and countless pats on the back.  Over the 2023 season, the MHS football put hours of time in as they practiced their drills, learned new plays and hammered out the kinks on the field.  And with their final game now played, the team is collectively putting away their pads until next season.

After a bye week, the Dragons faced their final conference opponent on their home field on Friday, October 20.  The West Side Pirates came into town ready to play and the Dragons struggled to keep them down.  Despite their best efforts, the West Side drove the ball down the field, converting scoring opportunities to points on the scoreboard.  As the buzzer rang out to signal the end of the game, the Pirates were up 49 to 0.

West Side not only dominated offensively but defensively as well.  As the Dragon offense worked to move the chains towards the end zone, they totaled up 80 yards of both passing and rushing.

For thirteen Malad football players, the game against West Side was their last night to put on their pads a Dragon.  The graduating seniors for the MHS team included Ben Martin, Mason Brees, Ryan Hubbard, Sawyer Poulson, Hunter Wray, Lex Driskel, Dylan Moss, Blaiz Wright, Braylen Tripp, Porter Ward, Blake Wililams, Caleb Mathews and Timmy Jensen.

Looking back over the last season, Head Coach Coy Crozier shared, “It was a great year overall.  I think a lot of people counted us out.  I’m proud of what the team has accomplished from the C team all the way to the Varsity team.  It would have been easy for the kids to think it would be the same season as the past ones, but they were determined to improve.  This group will help build a foundation for what is to come.  These kids learned an entirely new offense this season and ran it very well.  I’m proud of each and every one of the players and wouldn’t trade this year for anything.”

The Dragon C team ended the season with a 5-2 record.  The JV team finished their season going 4-4.  The Varsity went out with a record of 4-5.
