70 YEARS AGO (1953) Placing first in the beef judging contest at the Eastern Idaho State Fair at Blackfoot was this Malad FFA team comprised of (l to r) Larry Jensen, David Neilson and David Dredge.

5 YEARS AGO (2018)

Dale Nelson, Vice President of Corporate Air, showed his appreciation to Oneida Search and Rescue Commander Steve Coakley for services rendered during the Fed Ex plane emergency landing in Pocatello Valley in August. Nelson presented Coakley a substantial donation to SAR.

On August 28 the pilot of a small FedEx feeder plane landed on a gravel road in Pocatello Valley. The plane was sputtering and the pilot didn't want to risk a run to the Malad airport.

Because it was not a crash, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) did not travel to the scene to investigate the landing. However, the FAA did investigate and declared that everything was satisfactory and the plane was released back to FedEx which eventually transported the plane away on a trailer after the wings were removed. Oneida Search and Rescue guarded the plane until transport could take place.

Good job, Oneida Search and Rescue!

The Malad High School Class of 1968 met on September 29 at the Malad Senior Citizens' Center to celebrate their 50th class reunion.

Wow, time has gone by so fast! Of the 86 members of the class, 29 were able to attend. Some class members traveled from as far away as Texas, while others were in Malad.

The Jay and Belva Lene Baker home located at 360 West 300 North was named by Malad City as September Yard of the Month. The well-kept yard and beautiful flowers were noticed the entire summer by many people who commented that it should be a Yard of the Month.

10 YEARS AGO (2013)

It has been a year since the Oneida County Fire District announced plans to construct a new fire station. Work on the station has been ongoing since that time and is now complete. All members of the community are invited to an Open House of the new building on October 9, 2013. At 1:00 pm the flagpole in front of the building will be dedicated.

Students at Malad Elementary had the chance to raise money for the school, as well as earn new books for themselves by participating in the Reach for the Stars fundraising program. The students who participated gathered pledges and read at least 300 minutes in a 10-day period these students received 50% of their pledge money for the Usborne books of their choice. This year the students earned $1,514.83.

Certified DF LLC recently held a grand opening in Malad. The plant is used for processing and packaging diesel exhaust fuel (DEF). Plant manager for the Malad location is Ken Ward, while Karla Moss if the office manager. They currently have three truck drivers and are going to hire one more.

15 YEARS AGO (2008)

Clint Tubbs recently earned his Eagle Scout award. For his Eagle project, Clint and members of his Varsity Scout team assembled and installed a sportsman access ladder to use at the Pleasantview Reservoir. Clint is a member of the St. John Venture Crew 457, and son of Matt and Deneice Tubbs.

In conjunction with LDS General Relief Society Conference September 27, a multi-denominational service activity was held at the Malad Stake Center. Over 150 women in attendance assembled 1,700 emergency flag packets to be distributed throughout the county in the near future.

The Malad Middle School Eighth Grade Football team improved their record from a season ago to finish in second place in the district. This team included Jaden Bishop, Andrew Pepper, Braxton Davis, Bailey Edwards, Chris Martin, Cody Hoskins, Bracken Scalise, Hunter Clark, Taylor Thomas, Cody Andersen, Jacob McKinney, Harley Fisher, Thomas Southwick, Chance Boyer, Robert Bennett, Payton Neal, Brodie Higley, Brian Roedl, Quinn Eliason and Cole Finder.

The Malad High School Football team wanted to win their Homecoming game. They did just that, celebrating an important Homecoming win when they defeated the Soda Springs cardinals, 48 – 8 on October 3.

25 YEARS AGO (1998)

Working under overcast skies and cool temperatures, it took only an hour and a half for volunteers to plant 55 trees in Malad’s new park expansion Saturday morning. More than 40 youth and 10 adults turned out to place the trees in holes previously augured out by Utah Power & Light.

The United States Army has awarded the Expert Infantryman’s Badge to Private First Class Victor Hernandez. Victor is a 1997 graduate of Malad High School. He is the son of Earl and Nadine Ipsen. Victor is currently stationed at Fort Riley, Kansas.

Thanks to the generosity of Ireland Bank, the Oneida County Ambulance Unit has the benefit of a global positioning system (GPS). Bob Crowther, Ireland loan officer, officially presented the tracking device to local EMT Merrill Cornelius.

The Malad High School Dragon Football team was able to get a win against an A-2 school in a game that went right down to the last minute on Friday in South Fremont in high school football action. The Dragons pulled a 30 -28 win from South Fremont with a touchdown and the extra point scored in the last 58 seconds.

35 YEARS AGO (1988)

ITT Technical Institute announced the graduation of Paula Madsen from Malad, Idaho. Paula received a diploma after completing a 48 week Administrative Accounting Course, which qualifies her for employment in accounting offices or accounting firms.

Ralph L. Bennett, Malad, has completed requirements for a master of education degree in secondary education with vocal music emphasis at Utah State University. Bennett teaches band and choir at Malad Junior-Senior High. During his studies at USU he was on the Deans List and received the USU Chorale Special Award of Merit in 1988.

The Boys Junior Varsity Cross Country team placed third over all. Jared Jensen came in 7th; Corey Bybee, 19th; Scott Kimberling, 21st; John Ward, 23rd; and Lamont Jones, 25th.

Open warfare broke out in the Malad High School Gymnasium Tuesday night between the Lady Dragons and the Lady Indians of Preston. When the smoke had cleared, it was the Lady Dragons in the winner’s circle the first time Malad had beaten Preston in volleyball twice in the same season in over fourteen years. Members of the squad are: Aimee Rohner, Jennie Pett, Camie Buttars, Natalie Smith, Amy Hawkins, Erin Jones, Mary Ann Gunnell, Lezlie Williams, Shannon Daniels, Robin Alder, Kami Evans and Kim Jensen.

45 YEARS AGO (1978)

About 60 residents met with District 351 Trustees, superintendent and architect Max Call Monday evening to discuss the upcoming bond election for a proposed new Malad High and Junior High School building. The issue will go before the public October 24.

Mike Petersen, formerly of Alamosa, Colorado, was recently appointed soil survey party leader at the Oneida Soil Conservation Service Office. He replaces Larry Laing who served in Oneida for one and one-half years.

Miss Charlene In The Woods, graduate of Malad High School and Brigham Young University, is now serving as the Native American “Free-Lance Consultant” for the National Institute on Drug Abuse. Charlene is the foster daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Buehler of Malad.

55 YEARS AGO (1968)

Purchase of the Morgan property on Bannock Street for construction of a new Oneida hospital and rest home was approved at the regular meeting of the hospital board Monday evening. As soon as the requirements are met and approved by the Idaho Department of Health and the Denver Office of Health Education and Welfare, contract for the hospital/nursing home will let for bid. The estimated earliest possible date for construction to begin will be March 1, 1969.

Friend Elbert Sweeten reports that an eight-year old miss turned in this essay when asked to write about geese: “Geese is a low, heavy-set bird which is mostly meat and feathers. His head sets on one end and he sets on the other. He ain’t got nothing between his toes and has got a balloon in his stummick to keep him from sinking. Some geese when they get big, has curls on their tails and is called a gander. Ganders don’t have to sit and hatch but just sit and loaf and go in swimming. If I was a goose, I’d rather be a gander.”

Standout performer for the Utah State University Ramblers in their 28-14 loss to the Idaho State University Kittens at Idaho Falls was a former Malad High School athlete, Tim Willie, son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Willie. Willie won the starting fullback position on the Rambler squad and responded with an 18-yard touchdown. 

60 YEARS AGO (1963)

A missionary testimonial will honor Elder Don Lee Hess, prior to is leaving for the Southern Australian LDS Mission with headquarters at Victoria, Australia.

The Malad High School Homecoming Royalty this year consists of Attendant Nancy Thorpe, Queen Annabelle Evans, and Attendant Suzanne Bowen. Highlighting the activities on Friday October 11, will be the Homecoming parade and the Malad Dragon-Preston Indian football game.

Senseless destruction of property in Malad this week brought a warning from Sheriff John A. Evans that violators – regardless of age – will be prosecuted, as the costly waste must be stopped. Latest vandalism involves the breaking out of 25 to 30 tinted glass windows at the Malad Second Ward by rocks and pellet guns.

Herman Miller, chairman of the Malad Lions Club swimming pool committee this week reported that the Malad third graders submitted the winning name for the community pool – Auqa Plunge.

Causing an estimated $1,000 damage to two turkey brooder houses of the Vaughan Milling Co. was a fire, which broke out Wednesday afternoon. Mr. Vaughan reports the blaze apparently started in the frame structures from a butane stove, but was kept from spreading to other mill buildings.

First place winners in the opening series of four cross-country races being held her this month are Kim Allen, 1st, 2nd and 3rd grades division; Kevin Williams, 4th, 5th, 6th grade; Randy John, 7th, 8th, 9th grades.

70 YEARS AGO (1953)

Breaking into a locked supply room on the lower floor of the Oneida hospital Saturday night burglars escaped with approximately $200 in cash and a considerable amount of narcotics. The burglary was discovered Sunday morning. Police Chief W. E. Thomas is investigating. 

Between 250 and 300 bushels of Red Spring wheat was stolen Thursday night from the granary of D. L. Evans. The steel granary is located about two miles north of Malad near highway 191. A similar wheat theft was reported at Virginia, Tuesday.

75 YEARS AGO (1948)

Preliminary work on the Deep Creek Irrigation Co. 6,000 acre-foot reservoir on the Henderson site began this week. Contractor for the job is Marion J. Hess.




Thieves boldly breaking into the front entrance, stole slot machines and money from the Chat N’ Chew Lounge early Saturday morning. The burglars had pried the front door lock and carried away the 50-cent and 25-cent slot machines, which were placed just inside the door. C. J. Waddoups, Lounge owner, reported that the machines had not been emptied for several days. He estimated the loss of the slots and money at approximately $1,000.

Eugene Colton, son of Mr. and Mrs. Roscoe Colton, has enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He will leave for 12 weeks’ training at San Diego, California.

85 YEARS AGO (1938)

The annual Harvest Ball, sponsored by the F.F.A. Club, was held at the school gymnasium. The main events of the evening were the selection of the best hayseed, the prize truck dance and the crowning of the Harvest Queen. James Richards won the title of Hayseed and was presented with a corncob pipe. Don Anderson and Virginia Ripley won the trucking prize, which was a box of chocolates, and ReNee Thomas, the freshman nominee, was crowned queen of the ball.

Probable starting lineup of Dragon players for Friday‘s game with the Lava Mountaineers are: Bob Williams, left end; Dave Thomas, left tackle; Roland Evans, left guard; Dean Lewis, center and captain; Steve Jones, right guard; Marcel Josephson, right tackle; John Erramouspe, right end; Farrel Jones, right half back; Therman Thorpe, left half back; Glenn Vaughn, fullback; Sam Peck, quarterback. Other boys who will make the trip and probably see action are: Dee Call, Jack Clark, Kleal Jones, Elmer Illum, Gordon Crowther, Grant Thomas, Tom Thomas, Ray Williams, Ralph Jones, Wayne Viehwig, Farrell Daniels, Duane Morgan, Stanley Owens, Cleve Harris, Arthur Davis and Bob Straton.
